Why Lesley Powick chose Charente-Maritime

We fell in love with this wonderful watermill and love the area because of its sunny climate, however, the countryside is still green. We enjoy the tranquility, but like the fact that we are not too far away from some lovely towns i.e. Bordeaux, La Rochelle, Angouleme and Cognac.

A beautiful, characterful and quiet house, perfect for a young family

  • 5 of 5

Our family of five (kids ages 3, 5 and 7) had a lovely week in this house. The old mill has been beautifully rebuilt/refurbished, the photos on the website don't do it justice. The 2 main bedrooms, both with double beds (one with a spare single and the other with a cot), were enormous and tastefully decorated, the twin room perfect for our two boys. Downstairs was lovely, all very comfortable, the old water mill in the kitchen area being a stunning feature well preserved. Given the searing temperatures we had when there we spent much of our time outside dipping in and out of the pool while the kids played, blackberry hunting down the local lanes, swinging in the exceedingly comfy hammocks in the garden, playing cricket and football in the large shared garden, retreating indoors occasionally to cool off. The area is quiet, away from it all, with Jonzac, including the man made lake and sandy beach where we spent a very fun few hours, a 5 minute drive and the large sandy town beach (calm shallow waters) at St George an hours' drive. Leslie and Richard, who live in the adjoining cottage, were brilliant hosts, very friendly and helpful. Highly recommended.

Perfect holiday

  • 5 of 5

We could not have wished for a more wonderful holiday. Not only was the lovely cottage in a quiet and relaxing location, but it was clean, well equipped and very comfortable. We could not have hoped for better hosts and highly recommend for anyone looking for some peace and quiet. Absolutely perfect!

June 2011 holiday at Petit Etourneau

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Petit Etourneau. The property is characterful, well equipped, tastefully furnished and even better than the pictures on the website. It's conveniently located the explore the beautiful countryside and nearby towns. The swimming pool was a big hit with all of us, especially our five year old daughter and the lovely hammocks in the garden were an added bonus.

Richard and Lee are incredibly friendly and helpful, providing us with useful weather updates (the temperatures reached a scorching 38 degrees whilst we were there) and suggesting family friendly eateries nearby - the restaurant at the base loisirs in Jonzac was a popular choice.

In addition to the nearby towns of Jonzac and Pons, we enjoyed visits to historic Saintes with its Roman amphitheatre and the beaches at St Georges de Didonne and Royan are also well worth the trip. It was a wonderful holiday and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Petit Etourneau to anyone.

Great family get together

  • 4 of 5

Very relaxing family holiday with all the ingredients to make it a success. The lovely swimming pool was definitely a focal point of our stay.We were with a party consisting of the very young and not so young but it suited all.Great accommodation for a large family gathering if you take both properties. The countryside was beautiful and we can recommend The Coq D'or in Jonzac for an evening meal.

Summer 2009 at Petit Etourneau

  • 5 of 5

Great Location - Lovely people - cool house and lots to appreciate.

We went to Le Vieux Logis Restaurant in Clam which although not cheap was excellent and brilliant if you want to celebrate but on the other end of the scale we had a good lunch at the local bar - great value at 5 euros.

This was our first visit to this region, having been to many other parts of France. We will definately come back and Richard and Lee will be our first point of contact.

We had a great time!
