The beautiful cottage retreat is the perfect home away from home! This property is set in the heart of the village, close to the local restaurants, the grocery store and lots of fun activities. The village of El Castillo is tucked in the rainforest, in the mountains, on lake Arenal. Home to about 240 'ticos' and about 12 Americans, this village has lots to offer! If it is action and adventure you are looking for try zip-lining through the rainforest at Sky Trek Adventures or go exploring on horseback to one of the three waterfalls and take a swim. Kayaking is always fun and what a way to catch some sun and some fish!! Go rappelling or canyoning at Rancho Margot or white water rafting for even more adventure. You can go to The Butterfly Conservatory or The Snake Zoo all right here in Castillo! When it is time to unwind after a long day of adventure, nothing will soothe your bones like a soak in the free Hot Springs! This village may be small, but can pack a huge vacation!

This home away from home is a true gem!
The community is wonderful. The villa is unique with a beautiful view of the volcano. We did have a few issues with the electricity coming on and off a few times and the cable didn't work for the television the entire time. The property manager offered other accommodations but we opted to stick it out. If we visit again, I think a SUV is absolutely essential. Also we would bring more basic supplies and food. The road to the village is treacherous, but our taxi was able to navigate it. We absolutely loved walking around the village enjoying the restaurants and community life. Mamas restaurant was our favorite. They even delivered the food. The market has all the essentials and there's a cute shop across the street. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the village. An experience we won't forget. Hint: do not feed the village dogs unless you want their company for your entire trip. ☺️ They are super friendly and harmless though.
I am writing this on our last day here in Costa Rica. We have had an absolute blast and are very happy we found this place. As others have said get a GPS! Beautiful property with a wonderful view, although the volcano has not fully come out of the clouds since we got here the view is still breath taking. The house is exactly as it looks in the pictures down to how they fold the towels on your bed. Fairly nice kitchen that you can cook almost anything you would like, having internet in the house was invaluable to look up activities that we heard about from talking to others travelers and locals. Nancy was very helpful in booking any activities that we wanted to do (normally with little notice). As a bonus we heard about a secret waterfall that is a tough two hour hike up the road the house is on, keep walking up you will go through a couple of cattle ranches, one with a no trespassing sign we were told just stay on the road and he doesn't care. You will cross a small stream walk through a cattle field and the road eventually turns to more of a trail and eventually a narrow jungle trail. Beautiful waterfall that you can enjoy by yourself if you are in good enough shape to make it up there. Perfect location to do all the fun activities in the area, but also very quiet. The food in the immediate area is fantastic, howlers has unbelievable burgers, and the small cafe at the bottom of the hill has extremely cheap but fantastic burritos. No doubt in our minds we will return here again in the coming years. We can not recommend highly enough had the time of our lives here and we are sure you will too!
We were here for a couple of nights and found our favorite place was pearched on a cliff looking at the volcano from a beautiful observation deck. Here we got to see the local life wild And domestic. Nancy and Walter were great and very accommodating. Go here first!
My husband and I booked fairly last minute with Nancy and she was extremely helpful with providing information and helping us book a car rental though I would say to any future travellers rent a GPS and put 'Butterfly Conservatory' into the GPS as a handy trick to find the place since street names don't really exist ;) The GPS was invaluable. So was Nancy's aid in booking excursions and providing information on the area. I highly recommend the horseback riding, it was my favourite part of the trip. As for the cottage itself there was a kitchen with a very nice stove, 2 bedrooms, dining bench, bathroom, shower, laundry room, and TV living room type area. Everything was very clean (though don't be surprised to find bugs now and then, it is Costa Rica and they aren't that scary) and there were plenty of towels. The view from the balcony was amazing and I would spend every morning sitting in the hammock reading and watching the birds fly by. We liked the option of the 2 bedrooms because in spite of it being just the two of us we could chose which one we found more comfortable. The locals were all friendly and a week simply wasn't long enough in this area so we'll have to return some day :D
We spent 3 days during our last Costa Rica vacations in la Fortuna. The house was clean and everything was ready for our arrival. The view from the Hammock toward the Arenal Volcano was just bluffing. The neighborhood was very quite.
Nancy has been a great help during our trip. From booking activities to getting a local restaurant address, she made our stay more serene.
I would recommend this rental without reservations.
Our family of 4 stayed at this cottage for 3 nights. We wish we could have stayed longer. The cottage is perfect. With a washer and dryer, wireless, comfortable beds and a great view from the hammock. It is located about 10k off the highway on a dirt road in a small village called El Castillo. You will definately need a car.
Additionally, Nancy, the owner was so helpful in helping us book activities and giving us information on the area. Her recommendation for horseback riding turned out to be the ride of a lifetime with Leelander at Appaloosa Farms. Her recommendation for SkyTrek, was by far the best ziplining we have ever done.
