The region of Arenal, Costa Rica centers itself around Lake Arenal and the Arenal Volcano. Located approximately 14 miles outside of La Fortuna, a popular tourist town, the charming Village of El Castillo awaits you with everything you need to enjoy luxury and relaxation and still see the 'real' Costa Rica. Although tucked away and private, Castillo is also home to The Butterfly Conservatory, Snake Zoo, The National Park Arenal 1968, and a diverse selection of restaurants.

If action and adventure are what you are looking for, Sky Trek, the largest zip line over the Canopy in Costa Rica as well as hanging bridges and sky tram, are located right in our village! There are horseback tours to scenic waterfalls, or kayaking on the lake. There are also repelling and many organized nature hikes and tours that center around the volcano. If you like to push yourself, there are also off road bicycle tours in the hills around El Castillo as well as guided hiking tours through the rain forest. In and on the way to La Fortuna you can find White Water Rafting, a number of hot springs pools facilities, ATV tours, and many other adventures.

After your exciting days of adventure you can leave the fast pace of tourism and go back to your home in El Castillo, traveling through tunnels of rain forest and the beautiful countryside in and around the beautiful village of El Castillo. There you can relax and listen to the Howler Monkeys and enjoy a leisurely dinner and sit outside (or inside) and enjoy the pleasant breezes all the while relaxing in a tropical forest, enjoying the wonderful view, the wildlife and the quiet country atmosphere.

After a wonderful night's sleep in the comfort of custom made beds and orthopedic mattresses, you will awaken to the singing of hundreds of different species of birds and in the background, the howler monkeys sing their own morning song. There is public transit both from the airports to La Fortuna and from La Fortuna to El Castillo and Villa Millon and various activities. Please call us for more information on the alternative transportation options.

TRAVEL DIRECTONS:

From San Jose, take the Panamerican Highway to San Ramon, exit when you see the sign directing you to San Ramon and drive through the town of San Ramon following the signs of the Arenal volcano route. You will go through Bajo Rodriguez, La Tigra, Chachauga and then finally to La Fortuna. We suggest that you use a GPS mapping and routing system. Also the WAZE App for your cell phone works very well. When you pick up your car, enter La Fortuna and select the police station as your destination in your GPS router. Go west out of La Fortuna entering El Castillo as your destination in your GPS router. Upon arriving in El Castillo turn left through the village proper and continue up the hill approximately 1km. There are two stone pillars at the end of the drive holding a gate to the property on the right. You can call 1-303-915-0568 go get more detailed directions to the house.

DIRECTIONS TO EL CASTILLO FROM LA FORTUNA:

When you get to La Fortuna go west through the town and pass Tabacon on your right, then go a few more miles (about 4) until you see a tiny little police station on your right..you will take a left there onto a dirt road. Go 3 or 4 miles until you get to an intersection (T) where you must take a left or right. You will see a lot of signs directing you to different places in El Castillo. You will take a left. Go another few miles until you go over a small bridge and take your next right...at more signs. Keep going straight. You will pass the Sky Trek and continue to follow the road for a few miles, keep driving until you go over another small bridge. The first left after this bridge is the entrance to our village. Go through the village proper and then up the hill and you will pass the Serpentarium, then the Butterfly Conservatory (the house is approximately 600 meters from here)..continue going up and you will see Essence Arenal on the right. You will pass two streets on your right and then your house is the 6th house on the right. There are two stone pillars at the end of the drive holding a gate to the property. Please call us when you arrive in La Fortuna and either myself or our caretaker will meet you there. If for some reason we miss each other there will be a key in a combination lockbox. Please call me at (303)915-0568 for the combination.

About Patricia Davis

I am an accountant and live in Colorado. My favorite places to travel are Costa Rica - beautifully country and love the people, and Italy. I love being active and love to travel. I fell in love with Costa Rica - Specifically the Arenal Area as El Castillo is approximately 2000 feet above sea level in the rain forest where the temperature is moderate 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit with cooling breezes and beautiful countryside.

I cannot live without bicycling, skiing, my friends, my husband, books and Television - Almost but not necessarily in that order.

The most unforgettable book that I have ever read is The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. I love the Ender series by Orson Scott Card. My favorite adventure and espionage writer is Nelson Demille because he interjects humer into his main characters. I loved the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon about life in Scotland during its revolt with England and the early days of the settlement of America all combined with time travel.

Two of my most favorite travel destinations are Italy and Costa Rica and when I go I like to join bicycling tours and see the country by bike.

One of my favorite book series and movies was the Hunger Games. I loved the movies Top Gun and also Knights Tale and I mustn't forget The Princess Bride.

I am still a rock music enthusiast as it is very good listening for Biking, skiing and rollerblading. I also like Pucini Operas.

I have to confess that I am a gluttin for carbs which I must reduce at my age and have gotten into juicing. My favorite juice is Banana, green grapes, Orange, pineapple, spinach, slice of lime and crushed ice.

I supplied and decorated the house in a style and comfort pleasing to me as if I were to live there. The renting of my vacation home is a work in progress, and I am open to any and all suggestions because my aim is to ensure my guest's comfort and enjoym

Patricia Davis purchased this house in 2012

Why Patricia Davis chose San Carlos

I came to CR with a friend in January of 2012. I had been to Costa Rica before and had to come back. We stayed in El Castillo at another property nearby and looked into purchasing a property. I fell in love with this house the moment I saw it With it's fantastic view of the Volcano Arenal, and rolling hills and pasture land, and it's location in the village - very country and nestled in with the locals. Also there are many, many adventures within 1, 2, 3, and 5 kilometers of the house. The house is spacious and very cozy.

What makes this house unique

This home is a 3 bdrm home located in the village of El Castillo. There are many things to see and do and the views are beautiful.

Guestbook comments from the manager

The entrance through the twin bed room is not the only entrance to the Master and there is a lock on the door between the two which could be engaged for privacy. The other entrance it through the patio on the north side of the house. It is an outside entrance and this is in Costa Rica where you do not have to worry about cold weather. In addition, the roof has sufficient overhang so it is is raining you will not get wet while walking along the outside of the house on the sidewalk. Furthermore there are umbrellas provided for your use if it is raining with wind blowing the rain onto the sidewalk.

An oasis in the Arenal area

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I and another couple spent three wonderful nights at this property. Our friends were the cooks, (and we, the cleaner uppers!) and they said the kitchen was wonderfully appointed with everything they needed to cook great meals! There was a brand new outdoor grill under a shaded structure with a great table, chairs and hammock and hammock chair that we ate our meals. The property was Beautifully landscaped .. a true oasis!

The house was very near ? 2miles? To the Sky Trek zip lining that we did which was awesome, as well as the Arenal hiking Trail 1968.

Beautiful home with stunning gardens

  • 5 of 5

The area was so interesting. The home seems rural yet close to most activities that you come to Arenal to participate in. My grandchildren loved the hammock's and the outside living area.

The concierge services provided by a close neighbor made this even more enjoyable.

What a beautiful place!

  • 5 of 5

This was a great place to stay. The house had everything you needed and was absolutely beautiful. Close to many attractions but peaceful and quiet. We will stay here again maybe next year. Great views of the volcano, the hammock, hammock chair and grill was a plus.

Great view of Arenal Volcano

  • 5 of 5

This house made a great base for exploring Arenal Volcano. It was near the National Park as well as lots of other tourist activities. One of the things we especially appreciated was Erica telling us about the hike right from our doorstep. It was a beautiful hike overlooking Arenal lake, the volcano and the surrounding area. The hike was right there, gorgeous and free. The house was well equipped. The woodwork inside was beautiful. The landscaping outside was also gorgeous and the outdoor patio with its direct view of Arenal made a great place to have evening wine and morning coffee. I also loved the little community. I went to the minimart and the owner was so delightful as I practiced my Spanish. Erica, the property manager, was also great. We so enjoyed our conversations with her and all of her suggestions on things to do. We had a great time.

Pleasant Villa; Poor Experience

  • 3 of 5

We enjoyed our week stay at Villa Million but due to our interactions with the owner and managers we cannot recommend this property. Villa Million is a long (45 minute) drive from La Fortuna on the dirt road through the National Park. It is near many activities (zip line, hiking, hot springs) but a world away from the commercialism of La Fortuna. The village of El Castillo was sleepy and friendly with decent options for groceries and meals. We found the house comfortable with good beds and a living room equipped for streaming movies after a long day of activities. The lack of air conditioning was not a problem for us but might be in warmer weather. Sheets and towels could use an update and the sofas could use a good cleaning. Upon our arrival, the house was clean and the manager, Ericka and her daughters, welcomed us in the morning with fresh fruit, cereal, and milk. Ericka was helpful offering recommendations regarding restaurants and activities. She stopped by almost every day which gave us the opportunity to ask questions regarding house instructions (e.g., trash pickup) and point out issues (e.g., a window that wouldn’t lock in the master bedroom). There was construction next door that began early but, at night, the house was quiet. The view of the volcano each day from the living area was lovely. Tricia, the owner, was responsive and informative prior to our stay but after our departure, everything changed. When I wrote to her after our departure, she said she cashed our security deposit check, claiming we scratched a counter and damaged a tea kettle, neither of which we did (being coffee drinkers). We found the way this issue was handled, with the lack of communication and quick accusation, disturbing. Had we caused the damage, we would have notified the manager on the spot during one of her daily visits. I have yet to receive a response to my request to reconsider these withholdings or my deposit. This is in violation of our lease which states that, “The deposit will be returned within 10 days after the Term of the lease.” My husband and I have rented vacation properties for more than 20 years and have never had any money withheld from our security deposits. I have the highest satisfaction ratings as an Airbnb customer. My feeling is that neither the owner, Tricia, or the mangers, Gilberth and Ericka, are being honest or straightforward regarding this issue. Given these issues, I would not recommend this villa.

Owner's Response: Rebecca is one of those guests who wanted special considerations from the very beginning. She didn’t want to buy the insurance and she did not want to have the security deposit charged to her upon making her reservation. She instead insisted upon sending me a check which I would hold in case of problems. I preceded her group in the house as I was there to perform my annual inspection pictures and upgrades. There were no guests in between my visit and her arrival. I purchased an electric teapot the day before I left it was never used by anyone. My local management tells me it was on the counter. they probably knocked it off of the counter and broke the handle . I also have pictures to prove that the Guanacaste would heavily urethaned counter in the bathroom was in perfect condition before their arrival . Yet she claimed that I could not prove that they had caused the damage . It has been my experience that those who want special consideration from the beginning are the worst to deal with . Before I notified her of the fact that I had to deposit her check and get estimates to repair the woodwork she wrote me a glowing review which i will make available to anyone who cares to read it . She even informed me that they were making plans to come back next year in her initial post stay communications. But of course when my local management got back to me and informed me of the damage, she of course turned on me . Giving her attitude and the additional hassles she caused me I told her that I I was going to give her an unfavorable review . This was her response.

Great house, great region!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great week at Villa Millón! The house is perfect, plenty of room for our family of 4 (8 and 10 yr-olds). Ericka and Gilbert were very helpful for our activity planning.

The house is located close to everything interesting. We hiked 3 times, did the Zipline (absolutely essential even for someone who's afraid of heights like me!), visited the Butterfly Conservatory, La Fortuna Waterfall and Don Olivo cocoa plantation (really interesting and tasty!), relaxed at the Baldi Hot Springs, ate at Mesa de Mama and Pizza John's (both great), even found a little river to cool ourselves down after a hot day of hiking! Don't miss out on the beautiful sunrises and sunsets from uphill behind the house.

For groceries, I recommend you go into La Fortuna as you will really find everything you need (El Castillo mercados are ok for essentials).

Great house, great town, great and friendly people. Pura vida!
