Overview

About the property

Large country house, stunning setting/views, sleeps 6/8, 4 bedroom/2.5 Bathrooms

Colcello is a large, stone-built 3-storey country house in a magnificent hilltop location, with breath-taking 360-degree views. It is set in more than 16 acres of olive terraces and woodland, spacious lawns and orchard.

The house has a large kitchen/dining-room (used to be the stable!), opening directly onto a long dining terrace under a large, vine-covered pergola. The spacious and fully-equipped kitchen has a dishwasher, large and small fridges, built-in oven, gas cook-top, island prep unit/breakfast bar, and generous storage space. All kitchen tools, dishes, cookware, glassware, etc., are included. A separate laundry room with washer and dryer adjoins the kitchen. A more formal carpeted dining-area at the other end of the large kitchen seats 6-8.

On the second floor a comfortable lounge with TV, music and books available, opens onto a covered loggia, perfect for before- and after-dinner drinks, or shaded reading, with miles and miles of beautiful hills and valleys open to your view. Also on this floor is one double en-suite bedroom, opening onto a large terrace - perfect to greet the morning sun with your first cappuccino, or laze away the afternoon! A second double bedroom with a separate bathroom, is also on this floor, plus a further small bedroom/study with a quality sofa-bed. A spiral staircase leads up from the lounge to a large third floor studio bedroom, with half-bath, to sleep four. A "Juliet" balcony opens out onto "top of the world" views. All towels and bed-linens are provided.

Also on the property is a small swimming pool, set on an olive terrace, for sunbathing, swimming, reading and relaxing. A gas-BBQ is available on the dining terrace alongside the house, and a large walnut tree and the best fig-tree in Umbria provide shade and fruits in season! The property has a private drive, electric gates and ample secure parking.

It is a short 5-minute drive (or a longer walk!) to a local riverside bar/restaurant, Bar Sasso, very popular with local residents for traditional local foods, and outdoor and indoor eating spaces. There is a children's play-area and park here, and a place for them to paddle or swim in the little River Soara. About twenty minutes away is the local town, Città di Castello, for farmer's markets and supermarkets, restaurants and cafés, large and small piazzas, cocktail bars, music, outdoor events, and just "people-watching" !

Your friendly on-site owner is available if needed, unobtrusive if not, in her own small ground-floor apartment, always very happy to make you welcome and comfortable, and to help with any queries you might have.

Rental costs vary with season and number of guests, to comfortably accommodate 6 adult guests (extra charges for 6+ guests).

About Ann Waldman

Hello! My name is Ann, I am English, speak Italian, and I have owned Colcello since 1988. It is my great pleasure to welcome my guests to this beautiful house in Italy, and make them comfortable. I lead a double life, half in Italy, half in California, with even more travels to visit children, grandchildren and other family in England, Canada and Seattle!

My Italian neighbors and good friends in the lovely river valley below Colcello have taught me so much about life in Italy, and how to enjoy its many pleasures. Colcello is an old house, dating from 1675, and home to many generations of Italian families. Part of the ground floor, at the rear of the main house, is my private apartment, so I am easily accessible to help with any information or help you may need, without encroaching on your privacy. Meeting guests from many different countries, offering them hospitality, and helping to make their stay comfortable and enjoyable, is a part of my life in Italy that I value and appreciate very much.

Ann Waldman purchased this villa in 1988

Why Ann Waldman chose Citta di Castello area

Italy is a very popular destination for visitors from many parts of the world. The warmth and friendliness of the people, the food, the history, the art, the climate, the traditions, all play a part in making this a wonderfully diverse country. History is all around, an inescapable part of every-day life. So Italy itself was the main reason that I chose to live here. The house itself was chosen because of its location - one of those places you fall in love with instantly! This area of Umbria was once patrolled by Roman soldiers. Pieces of old Roman roof tiles are sometimes turned up when my olive terraces are ploughed! Old Medici palaces in the nearby town are still in use, as museums and galleries - and as local council offices! There is easy access to many other fascinating places in Umbria and Tuscany, hill-towns and hidden valleys, vineyards and olive groves, castles and cathedrals, and always the beauty of the landscape, and the clear light.

For many visitors traveling to Italy, it is love at first sight, and so it was with me. To live my daily life in this lovely ancient home, in a magnificent landscape, brimming with art and history, good food and wine, is great privilege, and a great pleasure. It's even more so when I can share it, with guests and friends.

What makes this villa unique

In 1988, Colcello was still home to a simple farming family, but the children were grown and gone, leaving elderly parents and an ancient grandmother. And these three were now ready to move to an easier life nearer the little city of Città di Castello.

The house was not then as it is now, by any means, but the stunning views were just as beautiful then, and it was easy to see that with a lot of work (!!) it could become the beautiful and comfortable home it is today, in a location that my Italian neighbors call 'il paradiso.' Of course, I completely underestimated the time, effort and cost of actually doing all that work, but 'love at first sight' happened! I can list all the things that now make it the place I love - but I keep the 'before' photos to remind me occasionally of all the things that 'love at first sight' can blind you to!

Now, every day, I appreciate my Italian home for:-

* stunning views over hills and valleys, rivers and mountains

* its character and history

* spacious and comfortable accommodation

* the pleasant little swimming pool, so welcome in summer

* a well equipped kitchen

* the many interesting nearby locations to discover

* beautiful surroundings for relaxation

* a lovely country retreat near a pretty little town

Delightful idyllic rural getaway

  • 5 of 5

As you drive up the valley road from Citta di Castello and pass Bar Sasso you catch your first site of Colcello rising above the trees on a hill. The view from the house is fantastic and always changing with the light. Valleys and hills appear and disappear. There is life and nature all around. Here you can swim with the butterflies which are all around. You will see butterflies like no others that you have seen before as they appear to float in the air.

The house has a very good standard of accommodation and is very well equipped. There is plenty of room for everyone to spend time together or find a space for themselves. Outside there are several terraces where you can relax, sunbathe and dine. The swimming pool set on the hillside above the Olive trees is a wonderful place to swim and relax.

From the house you can walk the trail of St Francis which is on the doorstep. At Bar Sasso enjoy the gardens and a swim in the rock pools. Then enjoy a good inexpensive lunch.

Citta di Castello is a lovely walled town with a weekly market.

It is easy to get to some of the main tourist sites. We visited Rome, Florence and Perugia all by train from close by stations.

The owner Ann is very helpful and provided us with lots of information of what can be seen and recommended good places to visit and where to eat.

If anything the descriptions are of Colcello are understated. This is a true Umbrian delight which all of the family would like to visit again in the future.

Wonderful

  • 5 of 5

Colcello is wonderful. Perched on the mountain with breath taking views, very comfortable, well equipped and pleasant. We, 5 adults and 1 four year old child, had a great vacation. We enjoyed the pool, the grounds and the immediate vicinity. We took half day trips to many of the amazing sights in Umbria and Tuscany. The owner was there to advise and help and even did food shopping for our first breakfast. We hope to spend more vacations at Colcello.

Italy lovers from rainy Derbyshire !!

  • 5 of 5

We have been to Colcello on a number of occasions, and during a variety of seasons. Each time we visit it is like coming home, so different in climate, environment and culture from the Peak District yet as friendly and welcoming as a derbyshire village. Colcello did not meet our expectations but exceeded them,a beautiful building, clean,well equipped welcoming and friendly. An ideal centre for art buff's (me), culture vultures and those seeking just good food and relaxation. I would personally recommend visits to Perugia (more manageable than Florence) Citerna and Urbino a Visit to Sienna, Assissi and Rome are also possible day trips. Personally though my favourite is a visit to Caprasi. I am not sure about many of the spellings but the visits are second to non

A Gorgeous "Hill in the Sky"

  • 5 of 5

Fall was a fabulous time to be at Colcello. We picked loads of figs from the enormous old tree and plucked grapes from the arbor for dessert as we dined on the terrace with sweeping views of the valley. The house was well equipped and most comfortable, and the owner was charming, friendly, and a source of great information about the area. We would definitely recommend a stay here for a rural Italian experience close to lots of wonderful medieval cities.

Umbrian idyllic choice

  • 5 of 5

This property is the ultimate get away.After a few days there the layers of stress just peel away.The view from the front of the house defies belief …you really do feel that you are "On top of the world!".At night the lack of light pollution gives you an incredible view of the night sky and ample opportunity to see shooting stars. The house itself is spotlessly clean and full of rustic charm.The swimming pool also offers complete privacy and spectacular views.When we went it was fun to go and pick figs for breakfast whilst overlooking the heavily laden olive trees. The owner is so friendly and so helpful when needed.Florence is an easy trip away and the owner also gave such useful advice to enable us to visit pretty hill towns locally as well as really interesting trips to places like Arezzo,Urbino,Gubbio,Orvieto,and circular tours around Lake Maggiaro. We were also lucky enough to receive cookery lessons whilst we were there also arranged by the owner. We really thought that this property was great and could heartily recommend it.

Paradise

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for two weeks,and they were two of the best weeks of our lives.

We looked out across the olive terraces as we swam in the pool. We walked in the shade of the forested area, and in the garden. We sat on the terrace in the evenings staring out at the views.

The local town had everything we needed, and a large market in the historical centre.The bar/restaurant just down the road by the river was really Italian.

Florence is only about an hours train ride away, after an approx. 25 minute drive to Arezzo. It was an easy day trip.

The house is large and comfortable with all the facilities we could ever ask for. The owner was great but respected our privacy.

We will definitely be back !

Città di Castello - a small, very ancient walled town on the banks of the Upper River Tiber. Cafès and restaurants enliven little streets and the central piazza. Enjoy the evening after-dinner passegiata - the traditional socializing stroll around the town. Live music in the piazza are frequent events on summer evenings, and a weekly farmers' market is a busy social occasion. A smaller antiques market is held most week-ends.

A recreation center & indoor/outdoor swimming pools are on the outskirts of the town. Tennis, thermal spa, health and beauty treatments, restaurants, are also available nearby in the spacious grounds of a resort hotel.

Colcello's location provides easy access to both Tuscany and Umbria, and the many famous and picturesque hill-towns of both regions. Nearby Perugia gives you a glimpse into Etruscan, Roman and Renaissance architecture and history all in one day. An easy drive to Arezzo, on the main rail-line between Florence and Rome, making it possible to enjoy a car-free visit to both those historic cities. Arezzo itself is an ancient and cosmopolitan city, famous for its gold jewelry, its monthly international antiques street fair, the famous jousting competition called "The Saraceno", and the renowned frescoes in the Church of San Francesco.

A pleasant 'day on the beach' is at the easily accessible Passignano, on the north shore of Lago Trasimeno, west of Perugia. Nearby is the site of Hannibal's famous battle and his defeat of the Roman armies. Ferries criss-cross the lake to little islands, and to Castiglione del Lago, a ruined castle on a promontory south-west of Passignano. Further south-west is Chiusi Scalo, with a national Etruscan museum and a chance for a guided visit to frescoed Etruscan tombs.

Your route to Assisi passes the large cathedral of Santa Maria deli Angeli, which houses the restored original church built by St Francis of Assis, a tiny gem, a shrine for pilgrims, and a complete contrast to the magnificence of the huge cathedral itself.

In the mountains north of Città di Castello is La Verna, a beautiful working monastery where Francis and his followers would go in retreat. You can see the slab of rock which was his bed, and the little chapel marking the spot where he received the stigmata on his hands. Modern pilgrims and hikers now follow his ancient route between Assisi and La Verna, which passes right by Colcello, forming one of its boundaries.

Near La Verna is Caprese Michelangelo, the birthplace of Michelangelo. You can visit the room in which he was born, and the tiny chapel of his baptism.

It is easy to travel farther afield and reach Florence, Rome, Siena, Venice, even Pompeii and the Amalfi coast by car and train, if your time allows.

After sight-seeing (and there is so much to see) Colcello itself offers a beautiful and welcoming place to relax, swim in the pool, read, eat and drink, maybe go to town for a cocktail and/or dinner. Enjoy strolling the olive groves, find an easy chair under the pergola to sip your wine, watch the sunsets, gather to eat and laugh and talk under the stars, soak up the peace and tranquillity. Benvenuti! Welcome to you!
