Casa Moleiro is a charming townhouse located in the oldest quarter of Olhão behind the markets and the seafront. It has been recently renovated, maintaining all its original character. The house is a beautiful example of the unique, Moorish influenced Olhão architecture. There are two bedrooms, located on different levels, and each with its own basin, shower and WC. The street level entrance leads to the first floor which has a living room, a dining and kitchen area with a small balcony and a small traditional box bedroom. The second bedroom is on the next level which leads to two levels of terraces, the highest with dining area and superb sea views.
After a short drive from Faro Airport, we arrived in Olhao in the evening. This fisherman's cottage was just as described and right in the heart of the village. The 360 degree views from the rooftop terraces were wonderful. The ambience of the house and its situation a delight. Everything was close at hand - supermarket, bars, restaurants, a bakery, markets, and the village square. We loved the village feel - the sights, smells and sounds of the locals at work and at play. We did a small boat tour of the Ria Formosa, and took a ferry to the beach at Farol. We did day trips by car to the nearby towns of Tavira, Loule, and Estoi. One day we did a longer drive to visit Lagos and Salema. It was always wonderful to come back to our cottage and relax on the rooftop terrace, watching the last boats returning to the harbour and the village lights coming on. It was a wonderful introduction to our holiday in Portugal.
Sitting in the back lanes of Olhao town with beautiful views from the roof terrace over the market and out to the nearby islands.
The town house was spotless and the description and photographs were accurate. There were some empty properties opposite in the process of either being or awaiting refurbishment but this did not detract from the sea views and interesting skyline which can be enjoyed from both the second floor and roof terraces which were well equipped with tables, chairs and really comfy sun loungers. Inside the layout is typical of the old style town houses with small rooms and narrow stairs and yet it all works well together providing adequate living accommodation with a great feeling of old world charm. The new ensuit in the upstairs bedroom although a little too open plan is a good modern addition however it does make this room rather cramped but open the doors and windows up to the terrace and the room has just doubled in area.
The owners were very helpful, attentive to any queries and let us store our luggage prior to the due entry time also having a British bank account for rental monies saves on bank transfer costs.
Olhao itself is a beautiful old working fishing town away from the normal tourist routes - plenty of good restaurants, cafes and bars [which are cheaper than the bigger tourist areas] all a short stroll away, a lovely promenade walk, great islands to visit and good bus and train links to nearby towns and villages.
This was our third September visit to the town and we haven’t tired of it yet
Olhão is the most traditional fishing village of the Algarve with narrow, winding streets lined with white houses. Many artists have chosen to settle there because of its picturesque character and traditions. The town still lives on traditional fishing and has an extraordinary daily fish market and outstanding seafood restaurants. Beaches can be reached by ferry boats and water taxis which take you to the unspoiled islands of Armona, Culatra and Farol. There you can find long stretches of white sandy beaches safe for swimming and appreciate the peace and serenity of this unique nature reserve. Olhão is a perfect holiday village which combines the pleasure and fun of having restaurants, cafés, shopping and nightlife at hand as well as easy access by boat to pristine and secluded beaches. The area also has a large choice of golf courses and Seville is just over 2 hours drive way and Lisbon 2 and a half hours.
