About Esther Ervin

This beautiful gatelodge is at the entrance to our Family Farm which was purchased in 1923. It was originally built as a Porters Lodge for the Gentleman's Residence which is Scion Hill. When my Grandfather purchased Scion Hill it was occupied by workers from the family Flax Mill. In 2010 we decided that it should be refurbished into Self Catering accomodation. The original part of the building is now a spacious Kitchen and Living Room while there is a luxurious new extension housing bedrooms, utility room, bathrooms and a hall. The property is very light and airy with high ceilings, large rooms and plenty of windows to enjoy the view.

Why Esther Ervin chose Dromore

This is a unique property to stay in. It combines the original historic building with luxurious modern facilities.

For special guests there is a small welcome pack of locally produced food.

What makes this cottage unique

Relax in modern luxury while staying in a historic lodge built in 1840.

Watch the birds in the wooded garden, and dine outside when weather permits.

Peaceful.

Such a comfortable and relaxing place to stay. Great views of the surrounding countryside and when you want the city it’s only a 30 minute drive into Belfast.

Idyllic country retreat

  • 5 of 5

The house is clean and well equipped with spacious modern bedrooms and kitchen and a cosy sitting room. Well away from noise but within easy reach, by car, of the nearby towns, such as Hillsborough, Downpatrick, Bambridge and more. Would love to come back.

Great Location; Great Cottage!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this beautiful gatehouse in July 2018, when it was very hot, so the garden with shady areas, and the gorgeous, enormous, cool bedrooms were very welcome. The rest of the accommodation was also lovely; nicely decorated, clean and well equipped.

Esther, the owner who lives nearby, was kind and very helpul but inobtrusive, which I think is what most holiday makers want from a host.

The location of this cottage was ideal for us. It's 10 miles from Belfast and it was easy to access all the main roads to reach anywhere in Northern Ireland. We took our own car, and a car is essential as the location is very rural.

We stayed 10 days and enjoyed every minute. The scenery, tourist sites, and mostly the people, were fabulous, and we'll definitely return, both to Northern Ireland and this fantastic cottage.

Host was helpful. Very quiet and peaceful property. Car is necessary. Not far from Belfast and Royal County Down.

Thoroughly enjoyed my stay.

Fabulous Country Setting

  • 5 of 5

During our 17 day tour of Ireland we stayed in 5 different homes. We voted this home as the nicest. All of the homes had something special about them. However, this home was Irish living in the purest sense. The home was immaculate! Nicely equipped kitchen, comfy beds and furniture. We especially liked the heavy curtains in the bedrooms that kept the room dark. We found that the sun was rising at around 4:45a and it brightened things up quite a bit. The curtains did their job well, since we had no intentions of rising at that hour. The Master bedroom was spacious. The king size bed was very comfortable. The best part was the cool walk-in shower in the master bath. You just have to see for yourself to know what I'm talking about. We liked the way the house was laid out. Kitchen, living room to the left of entry and bedrooms, baths to the right. Plenty of windows! Best of all for the city dwellers there is a field right next to the house that contains sheep and cows. Not a few but many. Country living at it's finest without all the work that farmers have to put in on a daily basis. All you have to do is enjoy the wonderful landscapes and the fresh air. If you are looking for a great escape from the big city hustle and bustle, this is your place. Don't think you'll be disappointed. Sorry, forgot to mention, make sure you get your groceries before heading in so you won't have to be bothered with it later. Then, you will have all you need for maximum enjoyment.

Cheers,
