About Dr. David 'Bucky' Wagmer

We have had our home on the island since 1972 when I was a coach and administrator at Florida State University. Our children were raised on the island (we spend most weekends here) and they still call it home. We completely remodeled and enlarged the property in the early 2002. It is virtually a new home. In the last two years I have replaced the air conditioned and heat pump, the dish washer, the clothes dryer and the refrigerator, painted the interior and the outside decks, installed new carpeting throughout the carpeted areas and added new larger flat TV's to the great room and the master bedroom. The home is again like a new home. We currently live in Statesboro, GA where I have retired as Associate Professor of Sport Law and Athletics Director at Georgia Southern University. I have also retired from my own athletics consulting business am a licensed real estate broker. My wife has retired from being a manager at an electrical coop. We have four children, all married, all college graduates, and all able to pay their own house payments.....We are in love with the island and hope to spend much more time here in our retired years. I am an avid fisherman and can tell you where to fish and when to fish and my wife knows every restaurant and every shop in the area. Please feel free to ask out advice about anything pertaining to your vacation.

Why Dr. David 'Bucky' Wagmer chose Florida

This property is a stand alone home on pilings located on a half acre lot. We have a view of the gulf and we are a short walk (150 yards approx) from the waters edge. It is super clean and well maintained. Very comfortable for four but can be used for six with my permission and after discussing with you your needs. We are located less than a mile from the middle of the island and the stores and restaurants. We are located on the walking path that circles the central part of the island.

What makes this house unique

As a stand alone property, it is peaceful, quiet, and has all the amenities to make you vacation a success. Including WiFi.

The island and the surrounding area is very special, quaint, bountiful, with the most beautiful beaches with the most splender than nature can provide.

Great property and close proximity to the beach!

  • 5 of 5

I surprised my husband with a trip to St. George Island for his 40th birthday. This was the first time either of us visited SGI so was going to be a new experience for both of us. We had a wonderful, relaxing vacation and loved every minute of it. The property worked extremely well as we had our dogs with us. The dogs quickly adjusted to the new surroundings and absolutely loved going to the beach each day. The house has an outdoor shower and water hose so made bath time for the dogs a breeze. The house was kind of in a "tucked-in" area with trees and provided a some exclusion from the road. We were a close walk to the beach - no complaints at all! The property was clean and well-maintained and everything we basically needed was there at the house. Before we left for SGI, I read other reviews so came prepared with grocery, household and toiletry items. I didn't experience an issue with the clothes dryer as some other renters expressed. The washer and dryer worked perfectly for us. There is a Piggly Wiggly Express, so if you do forget something, you should be able to find it all the grocery store. Wi-fi was a must for me and the wireless internet did not disappoint - had no issues connecting. Probably my only nuisance was the size of the master bedroom bed. We have a king-size bed and I thought the queen would be okay. When you are used to a king, a queen-size feels really tight and we had a few restless nights getting used to the less-width bed. Overall, we were very pleased with Bucky's property and I cannot say enough good things about our stay. We thoroughly enjoyed our week-long stay and highly recommend this area/house to any prospective renters.

I cannot write a favorable review on this property. There were just too many issues with the house that really dampened the enjoyment of our stay. We loved St George's Island, the close proximity to the beach, and the location and layout of the house. That's it. Upon arriving on Saturday afternoon, the housekeepers were still cleaning. They were just finishing up which was fine. However strewn about the driveway were large pieces of raw fish steaks that someone must have tossed out. The stench was unbearable. We took a drive around the island while the housekeepers finished and expected them to remove the fish debris from the parking area. When we arrived back the dead fish remained. The next day the smell became unbearable so we had to take sticks to toss the pieces into the wooded area and then hose the parking area to try to lessen the stench. I would expect a home to be prepared for guests inside and out. The first day in the home we found dirty used dishes in the cupboards. I ran the dishwasher the first night to ensure some clean dishes and utensils. The door on the dishwasher is broken so it falls to the floor and you cannot slide out the bottom rack properly. The dw makes tremendous racket and leaked water all over the kitchen floor. The air vents throughout the home were caked with dust/lint/soot whatever and black marks of dust along the walls and ceilings. The carpets were filthy and crunched when you walked on them. The exhaust fans in each bathroom had layers of lint/dust hanging from them. The shower curtains were moldy. The one sliding glass door to the deck was broken and did not lock. On the 4th night there the one toilet would not flush or fill up with water and continued the duration of our stay. The outside shower we did not use because there was a broken table and other debris left in it. Thank goodness there was a hose left outside.

I was in contact with the owner about my concerns right away and the handyman came out one day and fixed the slider lock. He could not repair the dishwasher. The toilet stopped functioning after he had been there and we were too frustrated at that point to continue to have interruptions. The owner did offer to have a carpet cleaning service come to steam but again, who wants their holiday interrupted?

It was very disappointing.

Owner's Response: I guess if you request reviews, one day you will get one like this one. This person called me the day she arrived and said that she was going to write a review of my property then she called me the first five days she was staying in my home and even called me on the her way home to say she found a loose rail on the porch. i was staying at my home the week after these guests left so I had a good feeling for what needed my concern and what was fabricated). The washing machine has always vibrated when it it washing, it has never leaked, and the lower door is functional. I replace the washer even though this is the first complaint about the washer it has been replace. The part that upset me the most is when she called my carpet filthy. The carpet is only 14 months there is nothing wrong with my new carpet.. The maids pet clean it after each pet and I have it cleaned quarterly. The sliding glass door just needs to be closed properly. This door goes to the front deck which has no access to the ground level and it also has a safety lock. The toilet that filled somewhat slowly one day and fixed by me in 30 seconds. I did find some dust on the celing near the outle grates and cleaned them with a feather duster. I replaced the toilet for a newer style that sits higher for older people and use less water to flush. . We had a topical storm/hurricane come through two weeks prior to this visit and we stored two plastic chairs and two small tables in the outside shower to keep them from blowing away. all that needed to be done is to replace them on the concourse under the house near the bar-b-que area. In the past year and a half I have painted the entire inside of the house, added new carpet, replaced the HAVC unit, the dishwasher and the clothes dryer, added all new porch furniture, painted the outside decks, upgraded bathrooms and continue to work on the landscaping maintence I have a neat home and a clean home. My maids are good and have been with me for a long time. The fish story had to be exaggerated because from the elevated house and the fact that the garbage cans are 50 yars from the house there is not way you could smell a fish from the house. My home is known to be neat and clean.....it is my home first and I take pride in its appearance. It hurts me to get a poor review it has never happened before. .this is my beach home, I love it. ssssssssssssssssssssssssss

Adequate but needing updates

  • 4 of 5

The property is in a great location. Our hesitance to give it five stars was due to:

The home itself seemed musty and damp (we didn't notice in previous years) from first entry. The garbage disposal was filthy (under the flaps). There were dost strands from ceiling in spots and stuck to textured walls. There was no coffee table as in previous years. We brought in a large Rubbermaid tub we used to pack and used as one.

Bucky is friendly and a delight to deal with. All the things above were minor but noticed

Owner's Response: Peggi Sorry you did not have a coffee table, the people who rented my home the week before sat on it and broke the glass top. It was being repaired. I have had the inside of the entire home painted. The home is getting to be over ten years old and I have upgraded the carpet, painted the walls and woodwork, put restore on the decks, replaced the HAVC, the dishwasher, and the clothes dryer in the past year and a half. I bought some new furniture for the front porch that is really comfortable. Please check out my new webpage, I have updated all the pictures as of this December. Thank you for your continued patronage.,

Another year in the books at St. George Island and another year in the books at Buckey's Hauser. Great place to stay and the owner is extremely nice and makes sure you are relaxed on your vacation. Great location on the island, short walk and you're at the water.
