Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday cabin in Miltona - Doane Cottage on Lake Miltona

2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, Sleeps 6

At Doane Cottage you are right at the lake. Just a few steps to the water. No hills or distance between you and beautiful Lake Miltona!

Wake up to vaulted knotty pine ceilings, hardwood floors, and a pillow top queen-size bed in each of the 2 bedrooms. Both bedrooms have a closet and shelves for your belongings.

The private lakeside sunroom can double as additional sleeping space, offering a Disc-O-Bed-Cam-O-Bunk for guests to enjoy. In bunk form, the top bunk is 3 feet up. The bunk also by comes apart to make 2 beds side by side. Each bed is approximately 3 feet by 7 feet, suitable for both adults and children.

The sunroom is furnished with wicker from Pier One, including a hanging Swing-a-San chair, a favorite of many. Whether used as a common area or sleeping space, the wicker remains in the sunroom for the enjoyment of everyone.

One bathroom has a small tub, with a hand held shower, a handy feature for families. The other bathroom has a walk-in shower with a glass door.

A washer (soft water!) and dryer will save you a trip to the laundromat, resulting in more time for you at the lake! Kitchen and bath towels and bed linens are provided.

In the living room, you can watch the flat screen TV, surf the net using unlimited free wifi, or just gaze out the picture window at the lake. There is a Roku and a DVD for the TV, allowing you to stream movies from Netflix, or watch you own DVDs.

Have family game night using one of the board games available!

Create home-cooked fare in the kitchen, using the full-size electric cook top and oven, refrigerator/freezer, microwave, crock pot, coffee maker, toaster, mixer, and just for fun, a waffle maker. Cupboards are stocked with pans, dishes, and utensils ready for your use. Grill those brats and burgers on the large gas grill! Dine at the breakfast table in the kitchen, at the snack bar, or take your meals in the sunroom, using the larger folding table.

For warm days, switch on the air-conditioning (2 window units), or you may use the fans if you prefer. There are also ceiling fans in the sun room and the kitchen. Other notes: baseboard heat, and small single car garage.

Have your morning coffee on the deck overlooking the lake, or in the comfort of slingback chairs at the outdoor dining table.

Cozy up beside the lakeside fire ring; the first campfire wood is included in your rental (marshmallow sticks too!). The big lake with its open sky displays incomparable views of the stars, moon, and clouds.

Situated on a quiet dead end road, with no neighbors to the back of the cottage, enjoy the privacy Doane Cottage has to offer. Fifteen yards of level walkway will take you from the house to the lake; a sandy lake bottom, with a shallow swim area suited for kids.

The dock can be used to tie up your boat and there is electricity at the dock. The bay is sheltered, and has calm waters. Situated right outside the bay is a concrete public boat launch, so launching and landing is no problem! If you do not own a boat, the resorts on the lake sometimes have fishing boats and pontoons available for rent, but this is not guaranteed. Included in the cottage rental are two ocean kayaks, a paddleboat, and life preservers for your use. We also provide some inflatables in the summer, including a Super Mable!

Wildlife is abundant at Lake Miltona. Spot Pileated Woodpeckers, loons, egrets, ducks, turtles, pelicans, beavers, and much more, while just sitting on the bench at the end of the dock.

At 5,800 acres, Lake Miltona is the largest lake of over 300 in the Alexandria area, and it is a premier fishing spot, with muskies, walleye, northerns, bass, varieties of sunfish, and more. Its size makes it an excellent playground for water sports, and the lake itself is easy to navigate, with its clear water and sandy bars.

The area boasts a winery that is open daily, live theater as well as a cinema, and a bowling alley. There is a selection of restaurants for every palate, ranging from Angelina's pizza and pasta, to Casa Bella romantic Italian, to Bugaboo Bay Carribean. Tennessee Roadhouse has fantastic ribs, and Chet's Lakeside Inn has been featured in GQ Magazine, and is the home of a secret Swedish Chicken recipe.

For golf enthusiasts, there are no fewer than eight golf courses in the area, with the nearest being the Lake Miltona Golf Club, located on the other side of the lake. Arrow wood Golf Course and Geneva Golf Course are two of the others that are nearby.

Head to town, where you will discover antique shops, boutiques, a maritime museum, and a historical museum. For your favorite cravings there are chain restaurants, bakeries, and ice cream shops. On the edge of town, take advantage of the mini golf course, go carts, horseback riding, and indoor water park.

Find fast thrills at the weekly stock car races or the demolition derby, or slow the pace at the vintage car and boat shows during the summer.

Minnesota is proud to be known as a 'rails to trails' state, and the Central Lakes Bike Trail runs right through Alexandria, winds around the lakes, and extends as far as you want to ride through the neighboring small towns and picturesque countryside. There are bikes and equipment for rental at Jake's Bikes in town..

Alexandria has something for everyone, with a skate park, a sizable library, a YMCA, and a park complete with ducks to feed (you bring the bread!). Kick back and relax! There is even opportunity for spa services, ranging from massage to body wraps.

There's a lot here, but this list is not exhaustive. You will not run out of things to do! Your hosts will provide you with literature, and are happy to give you directions and further info. Welcome to Doane Cottage on Lake Miltona in Minnesota! The countryside is scenic, and the people are friendly (Have you heard the term 'Minnesota Nice'? These are the people!).

About Jane Doane

Tom works in medical imaging, and Jane works in education and also at a group home. Married 28 years, we live in the Metropolitan suburb of Ham Lake and are proud parents of 3 adult daughters.

Aside from time spent at the lake, we both enjoy the outdoors, biking, reading, and anything that has to do with family. We like to meet people, and enjoy travel.

Jane Doane purchased this cabin in 2012

Why Jane Doane chose Minnesota

We both love the water. Tom is a longtime boat owner, and Jane grew up beside a lake, on a farm just north of here. Friends and relatives live in this area, and we vacationed here before we purchased this cottage.

What makes this cabin unique

The view from anywhere on the property is so relaxing and therapeutic. Coming to the cottage is a dramatic change from the pace of workaday life.

Cozy and charming are the remarks we hear in response to the vaulted ceilings, hardwood floors, and the sunroom with its wicker furniture.

The size of the lake makes it a great playground for water sports and fishing.

This cottage means spending more time with family and friends, and making them a priority.

The Alexandria area caters to the visitor, but is not over crowded, and has something to offer persons of any taste or interest.

Great spot on the lake

  • 5 of 5

The home was well stocked and had all the essentials. It comfortably slept all six travelers. The third sleeping area was away from most of the living space making it great for our children. They are in a small bay that makes it nice for swimming. There is a nice fire pit lakeside which we used most evenings. This cottage exceeded our expectations and is a great value.

Owner's Response: Our plans to become a rental included hopes that young couples could find relaxation and a sense of escape, while still caring for and enjoying their children. This was our experience when we rented cabins prior to purchasing the cottage. We are grateful that you were able to experience and enjoy the comforts so needed by busy parents. Many thanks for your kind review! Jane and Tom

Nice quiet relaxing getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed the quiet atmosphere of the property and the ability to swim, fish, kayak, and paddle boat right off the end of the dock. The cottage was clean and the furniture comfortable. The property was located near a town big enough for things to do when it was not lake weather. The Doanes were very easy to work with.

A nice, quiet bay of a beautiful MN lake.

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our 3 night stay at Doane Cabin where the quiet bay was very relaxing! Loved the sunroom with the swing chair for morning coffee and evening sunsets.... Chuckled at all the bull frogs calling to each other at night. Had fun on the kayak also, thank you for providing that. Warm & cozy cabin and so nice to meet you, Jane. Will call ahead to resorts nearby to rent a boat next time, as they were all booked up during our stay.

Thanks for a great "girls getaway" cabin!!

Owner's Response: We are glad you were able to have time away with a friend, and that we were able to accommodate you. There are resorts on the far side of the lake that will make boat rentals, but we inform guests that this is only if they have availability after their own guests have rented. We also provide the name of a boat sales company in town that will deliver a rental. We do not advertise or promise a boat for any of our renters. We are sorry to hear that you were not successful in locating a rental. We wish you the best, and thank you for your review.

Enjoyable Stay!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time at Doane Cottage! Everything is organized and well marked for guests. The kitchen was well stocked with cookware and several items "in case you forgot" yours, we enjoyed several meals as a family setting outside at the campfire. There were several amenities provided that are above and beyond what we're used to, so that was nice. The lake is so calm by the cottage, so nice for docking. Lake Miltona is great for fishing and swimming, overall we were very pleased!

Owner's Response: Every rental has something unique to offer, and we consider our calm bay a strong asset. Lake Miltona generally requires boat lifts, and our location usually does not. Thanks for staying with us, and we hope to see you return! Jane and Tom

Doane cottages lake miltona

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time staying at Doane cottage on lake miltona. The cabin was very clean and cozy after coming in off the lake from a cold and windy day off fishing. Jane made sure we had everything we needed and was very friendly. We will be back again soon.

Owner's Response: Hi Jim, The fishing opener is exciting, but the weather is unpredictable. It was a pleasure to have you as our guests, and provide you and the guys with the comfort you need after a day of adventure on the lake. Come again! Jane and Tom
