About Don and Anita Gillum

My wife and I had this house custom built in 2007 with plans to retire here in the not too distant future. In the meantime, we rent it out year-round so that others can enjoy the lake as much as we do.

Don and Anita Gillum purchased this house in 2007

Why Don and Anita Gillum chose Huddleston

This is an ideal property to rent because the slope to the water is not very steep and fairly easy to walk for older guests.

The location is on the lower end of the lake close to the Dam so the water is deep and clear.

What makes this house unique

We love the enormous amount of deck space that faces the lake. Two decks and a lower patio off of the rec room/ poolroom the has an HD flatscreen TV, exercise equipment, and a pool 9-foot regulation Brunswick pool table. There is a pub table for having drinks, playing cards or board games.

There is also a full length of the house front deck that catches all that beautiful morning sun.

The boat dock and deck is made of wood and is nailed or screwed down. These nails, and screws, sometimes back out over time and the wood will have some spots that will expose some splinters. Please do not run on wooden docks or decks to avoid snags that may cause injury. Wet wood can also become slick. Please do not jump or dive off of the upper deck!! Every effort is made to keep docks and decks in good shape but be aware of the potential danger

We thoroughly enjoyed the house.

  • 4 of 5

It was a little chilly for us in early April, but we watched the lake from the expansive windows and still managed to walk and sit on the dock. We liked that the walk to the lake was not so steep as at other places. We are scheduling our next visit for later in May and cannot wait.

Perfect place for my parents!

  • 5 of 5

It was a challenge to locate a property that would be restful, inspiring, peaceful, restorative and SAFE as a mini-vacation for my Assisted Living resident 90 & 91 year old parents. Navigation is an issue for them so it was particularly important that they could move freely and safely on the main floor with a walk-in shower in the master suite. One of my brothers and I stayed with them and Mom got to cook a bit with me -- something she always loved. Dad got to enjoy the Jacuzzi since one of his sons was present to help him in and out. We assisted them with the three steps at the entrance and over the thresholds to the deck. It was not our intention to get them down to the water, so the steps down to the dock were not a factor. The 3 night stay in March 2018 was perfect for all 4 of us.

We'll be back for a 5 night stay in May 2018 at which time some of the grandchildren and great grandchildren will come for a day or two of swimming. Mom wants to help me bake a batch of cookies from a recipe that belonged to HER mother so the little ones can try their Great, Great Grandmother's Lemon Cookies. Dad invited Mom on a moonlight canoe ride, but Mom wisely turned him down. Married almost 71 years, I think we'll rent them a pontoon boat and give them a lake tour.

******* So if you are reading reviews and seeking a spotless, bright, well maintained, well equipped, comfortable and delightful place to share some special family time, this may be it. My Mom described it as "enchanting". *******

Thanks again, Don, for answering all my questions and helping me check all the boxes for Mom & Dad.

Beautiful home in a beautiful location! Great people!

  • 5 of 5

We rented this property over Easter/Spring Break and we had the best time. The location was perfect because it was the exact half way point between our family in NOVA and our friends from SC. The weather wasn't nice enough to enjoy the water amenities but we saw everything in the boat house and it looks like we would have had a great time with that as well. The fire pit on the back deck was perfect for cool nights and it was right off the French doors to the master bedroom which worked perfectly since our 2 month old was asleep inside the bedroom. If she cried we we're right there to tend to her.

The pictures of the inside don't do this house justice because it's just gorgeous! The kitchen is designed wonderfully and is FULLY STOCKED! The only thing we needed that wasn't there was ziploc baggies, which we bought at the local grocery store 15 minutes away. We were surprised to find an entire other full sized refrigerator in the room by the kitchen, which worked great for storing food for our Easter dinner.

The basement was the perfect place to send the kids with it's own full bath, wet bar, living area and pool table. All it needed was a bed! (it had a foldable bed but we didn't use it)

The internet worked great for what we needed.

The best thing about our trip was Peaches and Jim, the housekeeper and her husband. We had to meet them at their house which was only a couple miles up the road to get the keys. I would say this was the most inconvenient part, although still not a big issue. I would recommend a keyless lock with a code for visitors to let themselves in. But Peaches and Jim we're very nice and accommodating. We had accidentally left our Samsung watch in the upstairs bedroom because it fell off the nightstand. We called them to ask them if they would keep an eye out for it while cleaning the house. 2 hours later Jim called saying they found it and would put it in the mail asap. That was Tuesday and we just received it today, Saturday. There isn't many places or people honest enough to find and return someone's property especially when it's a very valuable piece like that. We can't say enough good things about the house, our trip as a whole and the great people. We will keep this house in our favorites as long as it's available to rent!

Absolutely Amazing

  • 5 of 5

I had a spectacular time at this property. The house was equipped with everything my family and I needed. More than enough space for everyone to be together or have a moment to their self. The views are amazing. I wish my stay was longer. I will definitely be going back.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the review. We are glad you and your family enjoyed your stay. You are welcome to come back anytime. Offseason rentals are very laid back and relaxing but you should really come in the summer when the water is warm enough to enjoy for swimming, boating, skiing, and fishing. Thanks again for staying with us and come back soon!!

House is great. Dock not real conducive to swimming. No floating dock. Good location.

Loved the house. Kitchen had ants. We had to keep food on dining room table. Otherwise it was nice but can do better for the money.

The home is located on the northeast side of the lake in Bedford County. It is 7 miles to the state park which has a beach, marina, hiking trails etc. It is also only about 3 miles from a wildlife management area which is open to the public for hunting, hiking, wilderness camping, bird watching etc. There are lots of marinas close by so that you can rent boats or jet skis if you don't have your own. We have a community boat launch in our neighborhood. There are wine festivals in the area several times a year, and concerts at the state park.
