About this property

Cozy renovated and restored garden level in a brownstone

We have renovated and restored a ground floor in our family owned brownstone on a block with a landmark designated church. We are located in a section of upper Manhattan, the St. Nicholas Park area of Harlem. There are many details, wood chair rails, oak floors and carpets, decorative fire place, modern kitchen, exposed brick walls and a viewing garden in the rear. Kitchen cabinets are oak and the counter top and floor are quarry tile. There is a flat screen TV in the living room and a TV in the bedroom. We have WiFi. There is plenty of closet space. The building is located on a very quiet tree lined residential street and I am president of the block association. The pied a terre reflects the sophistication and simplicity of our travel and experience especially in the Francophile world. The is air conditioning in the summer. Laundromats are nearby. We have a well stocked library of books as well as periodicals including "The New Yorker," "The Magazine Antique," Vanity Fair," "W Magazine," "The Economist," and Veranda Magazine. We have nice bistro style table service, white porcelain plates, wine glasses as well as glass tumblers and bowls. Basically, the kitchen is outfitted with all that you will need. We will provide coffee and a French press, tea, Jams, sugar salt and pepper. If you require any thing additional as well as neighborhood and city information, we are available at home 24/7. There is a Foodtown supermarket right at the end of the block and they have a good selection of items. We also now have a Whole Food Market. The mattress on the classic full size bed in the bedroom is like sleeping on a cloud and the day bed offers more than rudimentary twin bed sleeping opportunities. It is outfitted with denim slipcovers and pillows. It makes for perfect seating while watching the flat screen television. The fold out dining table is an antique from our family and comfortably seats 4.

The restaurant scene has changed immensely and many dining options, soul food, French, South American, Japanese and African are available. Many new cafes have opened and they too are all within walking distance. Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelson has opened a great restaurant, the Red Rooster, and it is often celebrity filled.

Alexander Hamilton's former home, Hamilton Grange, is within walking distance and has been fully restored. it is a must see. This part of Harlem Also has great architecture and Strivers Row, the historic houses designed by Mckim, Mead and Stanford White is a must see. Columbia University is also within walking distance. The world famous Schomburg Library on African American and African history is on 135th Street and is a jewel in the crown of cultural treasure in the neighborhood. A new Jazz museum has also opened and they have fine music as well as lectures. More shopping opportunities have been developed on 125th Street and now major stores, H &M TJ Maxx and Whole Foods

We are a five minute walk from a number of subway lines an bus routes. The liner in the bathroom shower has a map of all of the subway routes throughout the whole city. We are about 45 minutes from JFK and 20 minutes from La Guardia airports. We can show you where to acquire subway and bus fare cards. By train we are about 20 minutes to Times Square 42nd Street. We are truly centrally located. Harlem is now one of the most intriguing and rapidly changing part of New York; it is truly multicultural

Upon arrival, we provide some breakfast items, orange juice, 2 percent milk, water, coffee, tea, croissants and preserves so that you will not need to rush out the next day to buy provisions. You should just enjoy yourself.

A REAL New York experience
Stanley, the host, was courteous and accommodating, even over a payment glitch that was entirely down to VRBO. Staying in the brownstone in Harlem gave us a much more direct experience of NYC living than any downtown hotel would have. As two white Scottish lassies in a black neighbourhood we had no problems, people were helpful and friendly. The apartment was warm, clean and comfortable. Would stay again.

NYC Visit
We had a fantastic stay at this brownstone property. Stanley was very attentive throughout the booking process and our stay, very helpful. The croissants, fruit juice, tea, coffee & milk were very welcome too. The apartment was very clean and had everything we needed. We really enjoyed exploring Harlem and it was an ideal base for visiting NYC. Highly recommended.

Excellent apartment
I have stayed several times in this lovely apartment which is quite spacious and surprisingly quiet being set in a residential street between two busy avenues. Several subway lines and bus routes are within a few minutes walk. A well stocked supermarket is only 2 minutes walk away. The owner, Stanley, is absolutely lovely and is always on hand to help. If you're really lucky you will get to meet Mercury the cat who lives with Stanley and his family upstairs!

Home from home
This was our second stay at Stanley's property and we are already looking forward to our next visit. What's not to like! Cosy, comfortable, close to several subway and bus routes including A train direct to JFK Airtrain, great food and, of course, Stanley who is a perfect host.

Charming Stay in Historic Harlem
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Stanley is an excellent host. Very clean and convenient to subway lines. The walk to the subway takes you through some areas with interesting characters and I would exercise caution after dark if alone, or take a taxi. I never felt unsafe personally. Overall very happy with our experience.

Rosalinda and I are long time residents of Harlem. In fact, we met at a jazz concert in Grant's Tomb. I was born here. Rosalinda has lived in West Africa as well as Harlem. We have a son, Alberto, who is fluent in French and English and we both graduated from schools here. I went to Columbia University undergraduate and graduate school of Architecture and Urban Planning and she went to City College majoring in philosophy. We also lived and taught English language skills at the International University of Grand Bassam in Grand Bassam, Cote d'Ivoire. Rosalinda is fluent in Spanish, French as well as English. I am conversant in French and fluent in English. We renovated our home in Grand Bassam, Cote d'Ivoire hosting friends from Abidjan and at one time housing students.

I still serve as president of the block association on 132nd and you will see the efforts of our labor upon visiting us. Rosalinda enjoys decorating and we both enjoy reading and gardening.

Why they chose this property

The property is a legacy. My father bought the house in 1938. I grew up in the same house. This house as a part of the block has all of the old world charm and the scale makes one feel like one is in a small town despite the fact that we are in New York. I have witnessed the neighborhood changes and am glad that the renaissance now is having such a great effect on the community. It is exceptionally quiet on the block and extremely neighborly

What makes this property unique

The pied a terre has the old world charm with modern updates. The kitchen is open, modern but has exposed brick walls. the living room has the original chair rails and the decorative fireplace is always so comforting. The bedroom with its exposed brick wall is filled with light. It is hypnotizing and to see the birds and watching the flowers blooming; it is heavenly.
