Gharb Village History: Gharb is the village that the visitor to Gozo should not miss. Its panoramic countryside tracks and valleys are ideal for walks and for relaxing. If one is not interested in museums, a walk to the cliffs at Wied il-Mielah, is worth every second spent. There, a spectacular natural 'window', not as exploited, but similar to the Azure Window of Dwejra is found. Otherwise one could opt to sit relaxed in the peaceful and picturesque village square, enjoying the view of the church, the lethargic strokes of its clock tower, or curiously study the unique shape of old hand sculptured balconies that adorn the village's oldest homes.

Church / Church Bells / Church Organ: On the 26th October 1729 the church was consecrated. On 19th May 1774 POPE CLEMENT XIV raised the church and on the 2nd October 1774 the first Cannons took their possession. They served as priests by staying in office for 23 years. The bells were made in 1732 and cost 3800 'skudi'. The larger one weighs 2448kg and cost 125 'skudi'. These were raised to steeple by the people themselves using beasts and other tools available at that time.

The organ was used for the 1st time on the 15th September 1912. On the 3rd January 1963 Pope John XXIII nominated the Archipriest as Protonaotary Apostolic. At that time Can. Archipriest Fr Guzepp Borg was the Archipriest. On the 28th November 1967, it was joined with the great devotion of Ta' Pinu Basilica with all honours and privileges of a minor Basilica and the chapter became to funcion in the same Basilica. It was Christmas 1971 when the Hebron choir under the direction of Canon Hon Achille Cauchi sang for the first time in the parish church.

Gharb as a Parish : Bishop Molina decided to raise the church to a Parish owing to the number of people (300) who were eligible to receive communion. Besides, the village of Gharb was 3 miles away from the Cathedral, and people who died at night could not receive the Blessed Sacrament. After being assured that the parochial community of Gharb could financially maintain a parish priest, Bishop Mikiel Glormu Molina declared Gharb as a parish on the 29th August 1679.

It is believed that Bishop Molina used to live in the house which today is known as Penmon Farmhouse.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hello Mark!

We had a very nice stay at Penmon and Gozo! The place is perfect for families like us who like to be active with walks, bathing in the sea and enjoy good food! Gozo was a very friendly island with very nice people and neighbours!

We liked Penmon. I checked with everybody, and asked if they could recommend something to improve service. It wasn’t any special but the one thing was to have a dish machine!

Thanks for the rent! We recommend Gozo for others as well!

Perfect Stay

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at Penmon Farmhouse for three weeks in November/December. This is a very special property, historic and charming, yet fully updated to the highest standards. It is situated on a quiet street in the lovely village of Gharb, just steps away from the open countryside with miles of walks through terraced fields with vistas to the sea. The property is beautifully decorated and extremely clean and well maintained. The pool area is quite special. Mark, the owner, was very helpful in making sure we were settled and well taken care of during our stay. The housekeeper, Nancy, was great. She could answer all our questions and direct us to everything we needed. We loved the village, and found a grocery nearby, the post office and two very good restaurants: Grazie Mille and Salvina, which was only around the corner. We thank Mark and Nancy for a truly wonderful experience.

We were a group of 11 people and stayed for a 4 nights. First of all, Mark is very helpful and friendly and will assist you where necessary.

The farmhouse is very well equipped and in excellent condition. All the rooms have modern en-suite bathrooms, as well as a great kitchen and pool/bbq area. It is also located in a very quiet area in Gharb.

Would defenately reccomend this Farmhouse to anyone, including families with small children. Will probably be booking again for next year!

Impressive farmhouse

  • 5 of 5

We had a very enjoyable stay in this lovely farmhouse. The accommodation was spacious and the kitchen was extremely well equipped. Fun was had by all in the spacious pool. The village of Gharb was very pleasant with a well stocked shop although the Lighthouse supermarket in San Lawrence was excellent. For a meal with a view the rooftop terrace of the Rangers Bar and Restaurant Gharb is to be recommended.

Our dealings with Mark and his daughter who met us at the airport were pleasurable and straightforward.

Beautiful villa in a lovely village

  • 5 of 5

There were 10 people in our group, varying in age from 10 upwards. The villa provided us all with everything we needed. The space was enough that we did not feel crowded. All of the bedrooms were lovely and spacious. The air conditioning was very effective and inexpensive .

We ate out several times in the village. As always the people of Gozo were very warm and friendly.

Mark was also very helpful throughout the entire booking process, Our needs were met.

I would strongly recommend Penmon farmhouse to anyone.

high quality family accommodation

  • 5 of 5

We had a really great holiday. The accommodation was good quality and the pool was great. The kitchen was well equipped and outdoor entertaining area was fantastic. The only flaw was that next door was a building site with noise from large machinery most days which spoilt any peace and quiet. Not the owners fault but not restful.

Great holiday

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the farmhouse to celebrate our golden wedding anniversary with our family for one week (17/05/2916 to 23/05/2016) I must say that it was perfect we all had a good time. We all celebrated our anniversary with a meal at Silvana restaurant which was only about three minutes walk from the farmhouse we would recommend this restaurant, food and staff were all fantastic. JAne from Swindon Wiltshire.

The motto of the village is 'In extremo vigilat' which means 'Sentinel at the borderline'.

Gharb means West and this typical old Gozitan village unsurprisingly lies in the West of the Island.

The word 'Gharb' is semitic and means sunset - symbolizing the position of Gharb at the west of the island of Gozo.

It started life as a small hamlet centuries ago. Its ancient roots can be seen in the centre of the village where certain houses have fine examples of decorated stone balconies from the 16th century.

The population of Gharb is around 1533 with a total of around 475 families. The area of Gharb is about 14sq kms. The village is surrounded by many popular places, such as Ta Pinu,Ta frenc, Dwejra, and the Azure window, with the Mediterranean sea just a couple of kilometres away.

The village square, so quintessentially Gozitan, has become the view on many postcards. In the square is a fascinating folklore museum housing all sorts of memorabilia retelling the Islands' rural history.

'taż-Żejt' Chapel found at St Peter Street, Gharb.

This chapel which is the chapel of the cemetry of the Locality was also the old parish church of the locality, before the new one was built. It is called 'taz- zejt' because of a legend that says that an old woman was cured when she spread over her body some of the oil that used to ooze out the church's side.

San Dimitri Chapel:

Found in the countryside, at the inner part of Birbuba Street, where a country road leads to this chapel. There is a legend related to this chapel, in which it is said that an old lady called Sgugina who had her son stolen by the Turks was praying San Dimitri in this chapel and the saint was seen coming out of the titular painting of the chapel and returned bringing back home her son. The feast is held annually on the second weekend of October.

'Ta` Pinu' Shrine found at Ta' Pinu Street::

Ta' Pinu Sanctuary is a place of great devotion and of national importance and is visited by numerous persons all year round, both locals and tourists. Various pilgrimages are held to the Sanctuary. This sanctuary is an extension to a chapel which is still found in the inner northern part of the sanctuary. This was the chapel from which back in 1883 Karmni Grima a saintly woman from Gharb heard the voice of Our Lady talking to her asking her to recite three Holy Mary's for those three days spent within the tomb.

Karmni Grima Museum:

This museum is located at the beginning of Gharb Road. This museum is found at the beginning of the village and is the same home where Karmni Grima, the saintly lady who heard the Holy Mary talking to her used to live. In this musuem one can find various personal belongings of Karmni.

'Frenċ ta` L-Għarb' Museum:

Located in an Alley at Frenc ta' l-Gharb Street. This museum is found in the village core. It is the same home of Frenc Mercieca better known as Frenc ta' l-Gharb, a saintly man, who lived some years ago (1892 - 1967) and who cured a lot of people with his prayers and his faith in Our Lady.

Għarb Folklore Museum:

Located at Pjazza Zjara tal-Madonna.This is a private owned museum found in the core of the village with 28 rooms filled with all kind of antique tools and prestigious items. Click here to view the site . For more information please call on telephone number:- 00356 21561929.

In our locality one can also find Ta' Dbiegi crafts village situated at Frangisk Portelli Street where various crafts are made. Amongst others one can find hand-made pottery, hand-blown glass, lace-making and filigree. One could mention that in Gozo, crafts like glass blowing and pottery are only found at Gharb.

Old Balconies:

At Gharb one can note various old and sculptured balconies found in some of the oldest homes around the village.
