You enter this home and are greeted by huge fossils from Morocco and a sculpture of a petite Japanese lady giving you an 'Ohaio'(Good day) greeting. You turn to the right into the Great Room and adjacent Dining Room, with their own unique sculptures and paintings. Huge Night Blooming Cereus cactus and tropical ginger shade the floor to ceiling from the desert sun. Continue your journey into the kitchen, equipped for someone who LIKES to cook (OR NOT). The surrounding windows look out onto your gigantic patio with its views of the grounds and neighborhood. You complete your primary circular journey by entering the gigantic living room with its soaring ceilings and stone fireplace. You can imagine yourself holding forth on the issues of the day with a glass of wine while supper is being prepared. A roaring fire is adding warmth to the convivial glow.
And the journey is only half over. Pass through the living room to right. You will see the great library, stocked with books, records and CD's spanning a collection life of nearly 50 years.
The bedrooms and computer room are just down the hall...
The laundry room is just to the left. The computer room is straight ahead. It is equipped with a Dell desktop computer with 2GB of RAM and scads of memory. It also has a wireless router, a scanner, and a color laser printer if you simply cannot leave business behind. Movies? You ask? Netflix is available (at no charge) for instant online viewing. And to continue the motif you noted upon entry to the house, the computer room desk is a 6 foot long black marble table filled with fossils The table originated in Morocco. The guest bedroom is just to the right with its own bath. And the Master Bedroom? Goodness! It is fully 28' X 21' with its own entrance to the patio. The bath? Ah. The Master Bath! A fully glassed and tiled shower, 3' X 9', handicapped accessible, with the adjoining lav area including his and hers basin areas.
This is truly a vacation home you will talk about for years to come.
*The 3rd bedroom is used as an office. Please specify if you need sleeping accommodations for the 3rd bedroom. But your third bed is not forgotten. We erect a queen bed with a 10' memory foam mattress in the library. Same privacy, just 12 additional feet to the bathroom. You can peruse my Calvin cartoon book collection and laugh yourself to sleep, or you can go through the really incredible collection of 'coffee table' books ccovering logging in the late 19th and early 20th century to 500 Million Years of Art in glorious sea shells.
I grew up in Pennsylvania and was a great fan of Western movies. I knew I had to live in the Southwest one day. My wife and I purchased this home in 2011. We were drawn to it because it in the Southwest, has seclusion, is in a country club community and yet is close to town and the University I attended 55 years ago.
Donald Kotowski purchased this house in 2011
As previously noted, I love the Southwest, most specifically the desert. Additionally, the Incredible Organ Mountains call out to me daily to hike with my two dogs...an Old English Sheep Dog and a Brittany/Poodle mix.
Seclusion, room for me and for my 'boys' (dogs) on one half acre with mature desert landscaping, access to the desert and wonderful hiking, yet close to the city, shopping, and health care facilities.
The property is located in a quiet upscale suburb in the hills overlooking Las Cruces. The grounds are nice, the interior is clean, spacious and well appointed. The location requires a short drive to downtown or Old Mesilla. There is one restaurant nearby, but the nearest bar/brewpub etc., is a drive into town.
Our stay at this property should have been an easy 5 stars. We give it 4 however because the owner choose to ring the door bell at 10:00 AM one morning, then unlock the door and ask "Is anyone here"..waking up and startling a sleeping guest while the rest of us were in town.
The house is a really big house with all the amenities and in a great location.
The house needs cleaning really bad. There is dust all over the furniture.
The furniture upholstery has never been cleaned.
If I rented the place again. I would contact a cleaning agency to clean it.
I would be extra, but it would give us peace of mind.
The offering is gorgeous, spacious, and complete with almost any amenity you could reasonably want. But I want to talk about the host, Don. He is a delight. You might stay here and you will have a great time. But take a few minutes and hang out a bit. I guarantee you your life will be enriched. He is a generous host with little fuss. You feel welcome as though you are staying with a friend whom you have known for years. Yes you might even feel a bit guilty that you have not been better about staying in touch. But when you get the keys all is forgiven, welcome home.
I hope this review might inspire a few to take the time to get to know Don a bit better and appreciate the place as more than simply a place to spend the night.
We stayed here for the graduation of our daughter from NMSU. The kitchen, great room, and patio were ideal for socializing the night before and afternoon/evening of her graduation with family and friends. Don even allowed her uncle and aunt to park their camper in the driveway. Anyone who rents this home should realize that you are staying in a home that is a permanent residence when not rented. He stays at a friend's house during your stay. It is not the typical vacation rental that we have used through VRBO. As long as you don't mind all of a person's personal effects in drawers, on counter tops, and in the fridge, you will be okay. One of the beds had a fine dust and debris between the sheets which we ended up washing before feeling comfortable sleeping in. You might want to bring your own pillows. One unnerving detail was how he kept driving by several times per day to "check" on his house. The first evening and next morning, he was actually on the property, walking around the yard and even coming into the house to retrieve some personal items. It was a bit creepy to look up and see him drive by the house with his three dogs and windows down at 5 miles per hour to see how his house was being treated. Overall, the convenience of staying in a home to celebrate the event was better than we could have expected if staying in a hotel.
The area the home was located was beautiful. The home was great and Don couldn't have been more friendly. Several evenings I took a walk through the neighborhood and admired all the homes and the view. The location was also close to the activities we wanted to do. We went to the Saturday farmers market downtown and had a blast. My wife wants to go back and if Don's home is available we will stay again.
Several factors were the cause of our disappointment; a faint odor of vinegar persisted during our stay; some of the flat surfaces were covered with dust which activated my wife's allergies. She called it "selective dusting"; there was no drawer space in the master bedroom so we lived out of our suitcases for 3 days. While we understand this is a private home, it's been our experience with VRBO that private homes always made arrangements for drawer space for visitors; The lighting around the large makeup mirror in the master bath was surrounded by globe-style light bulbs. Except ten were missing. On closer exam, the weren't just missing, they were broken off at the base leaving some with the filaments exposed. That's an electrical hazard especially when the lights are on and the water is running just inches away from live sockets; The fabric on most of the dining room chairs was stained and in some cases, torn; The sparse furnishings, with the exception of 2 overstuffed chairs, were antiquated and uncomfortable; Our overall experience was not up to the standards we've learned to expect from our 15 year experiences with VRBO.
Las Cruces is located in the Chihuahua Desert and is surrounded by the incredible rocky peaks of the Organ Mountains, the San Andreas Mountains, and some of the most beautiful desert landscape in the US. The hiking possibilities are endless as are the activities for the young at heart and at least moderately fit. New Mexico State University has many activities which are community oriented throughout the year.
