Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday home in Alaska - Campbell House

Restored 1935 Matanuska Colony House

The Campbell House, listed on the National Historic Register, is an original 1935 Matanuska Colony house.

The Campbell House is conveniently located just off the Glenn Highway in the heartland of Palmer, 45 minutes from Anchorage and near the award winning Alaska State Fairgrounds - home of the world famous giant vegetables!

Outstanding mountain views surround Palmer. With our small town friendliness, surrounding beautiful farmlands - this is what Palmer Alaska is all about!

A stay at the historic Campbell House is a step back in time with all the comforts of today! Beautifully restored hardwood floors, staircase, columns, historical style windows combined with contemporary comforts add up to an unforgettable stay!

Relax the day away in the beautiful Master Bedroom upstairs with a luxurious king size bed and awesome mountain views!

Across the hall another delightful bedroom with beautiful hardwood floors and a pair of inviting and comfortable twin beds overlooks the garden.

A beautiful fully equipped, bright and shiny, new kitchen is ready for you! Whether you love to cook or just use the microwave and fridge ~ it's all there :)

Savor your morning coffee in the dining room or outdoors with garden and Pioneer Peak view ~ sunshine and mountains are on the menu! Be sure to keep an eye on the strawberries and raspberries - you will be able to pick a tasty Alaskan treat if you are here in season!

The living area is cozy and comfortable as can be with leather loveseats, chair and ottoman, and upholstered occasional chair - lots of options for watching that 40 inch TV after a long day of exploring the magnificent state of Alaska!

The Campbell House in 1935, was without indoor plumbing, but never fear ~ no outhouse - it's restored and used as a garden shed now. We had you in mind when we designed this bathroom! A large custom tile walk in shower, a beautiful antique vanity with contemporary glass vessel sink, modern privy and stacking washer and dryer will meet all your vacation needs for comfort :)

A main floor bedroom with a twin sleigh bed is a great option as a quiet space for exploring our many great Alaskan books you will find around the Campbell House!

So many opportunities for fun during your stay at the Campbell House! Palmer offers micro breweries, coffee houses, festivals and art fairs, the state fair, golf courses, shopping, hiking, biking, trails, parks, farm tours, sight seeing, flight seeing, and even parachuting!

Palmer's downtown main street offers a variety of shopping and dining choices. Stop in a one of our local bars for the Alaska experience -enjoy live music, a game of pool or darts - probably a story or two of 'the one that got away'.

Palmer's historic district, across the tracks offers museums, visitor center, library and more great eatery's. Visit our airport and watch the planes - we are a hub of air activity!

Take a day trip to Hatcher Pass and historic Independence Mine, the Reindeer Farm, the Musk Ox Farm, Matanuska Glacier, hike the Butte or Lazy Mountain ~ and still have time to put your feet up at the end of the day and watch the sunset above Pioneer Peak from the front lawn of the Campbell House!

Whether you head north to Talkeetna, Fairbanks or Denali on the Parks Highway or south to Anchorage, Seward or Homer, the Campbell House a great home base for your stay in Alaska!

Alaska has beauty twelve months of the year ~ it's always a perfect time to visit!

About Q54 Management

We love living in the unique small town of Palmer Alaska! We have called Palmer home since moving to Alaska in the 1980's. Our first home was near the Matanuska Glacier. Now we currently reside closer to the townsite of Palmer.

Q54 Management purchased this house in 2011

Why Q54 Management chose Alaska

Our love of Palmer and its history led us to purchase a historic colony house. This little gem needed some tender loving care to restore her to her former glory and to continue telling her story. The Campbell House is located on the Springer system of roads ~ a most sought after location! Its a beautiful piece of property surrounded by farms that grow world famous Alaskan produce! It has glorious views of Pioneer Peak - our beloved Palmer mountain! It was a little house that needed a lot of love! Just the right house for us - love Palmer, love its history, love the location - win, win, win! :)

What makes this house unique

The Campbell House has been accepted to the National Historic Register! So exciting to have restored and preserved ~ and to share the history of the 1935 Palmer Colony project!

This was the perfect place to stay in Alaska. While not remote, the house was very cozy, and equipped with everything we needed.

Step back into the past

Thoroughly enjoyed my stay in the Campbell House. As a third generation Colonist it brought back lost of memories of growing up here just around the corner in the 40s and 50s.

The suggestion to unpack downstairs is sound. The stairs are steep and narrow but the rooms up stairs are adorable.

The kitchen is well stocked for preparing your own meals. Lots of reading material about Alaska and comfy sofas to curl up and read in. Very cozy. I would definitely recommend it to friends.

Adorable, cozy, amazing view

  • 5 of 5

I stayed in the Campbell House with my two older children while visiting my family and going to the Alaska State Fair. It was the perfect location for us and I can't say enough good things about the house. It was so well set up, they seemed to have thought of everything. The house is warm, comfortable and beautifully restored. The outdoor spaces are lovely with a rolling grass lawn, flower beds, a swing, and stunning views of Pioneer Peak. The kitchen is large and well stocked. Our experience was amazing. We will definitely be back!

Simply perfect.

  • 5 of 5

Towards the end of our Alaska trip we stayed in the Campbell House. Simply perfect. We stored our luggage in the small downstairs bedroom and used the upstairs bedroom for sleeping. The kitchen and amenities were outstanding. Made ourselves a hot breakfast in the morning and enjoyed wine time in the evening before dinner. Read the other 5 star reviews for specific details, but accept my review as saying, "Simply Perfect." I would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Charming, historic, clean house with many amenities. =]

Oh, I loved this house! It has everything you need and more, plus was decorated with stylish antiques along with newer items and delightful vignettes. I was there at the end of July, stayed in the downstairs bedroom and found the bed comfortable. I was surprised there was a drive with several newer cottages behind it, not a bother at all (quiet), just didn't know. Nice view of the mountains. I enjoyed having coffee by the lovely garden. The shower is huge! I liked that the home was clean and there were supplies to keep it clean. It is priced GREAT for everything you get. One of the highlights of my AK trip!

Owner's Response: Isn't Pioneer Peak a beautiful backdrop to the garden and yard of the Campbell House? I love sitting on the tree swing and looking at the mountains. We have had such great weather this summer - perfect for coffee outside. I hope you helped yourself to the delicious golden raspberries along the driveway. We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay!

Wonderful house/rental!

We loved the property and house! The rooms were cozy, the decor was classy, and it was a great value. The only wish that I have is that they stocked the cupboard with a variety of spices to use for cooking in that lovely kitchen! The muffins were a sweet touch, and we had a fantastic stay! Thanks so much!

The Campbell House is a restored 1935 Colony House located in the heartland of Palmer, in the shadows of magnificent Pioneer Peak and surrounding farmlands.

Palmer is a historic town which grew rapidly when the New Deal Act of 1935 was put into action by President Roosevelt. Colonists from Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin were selected to move to Alaska to develop the land thru farming and related industry.

The Colonists lived in a Tent City until the lottery drawing took place which determined their home sites.

George and Onabel Campbell from Mio, Michigan drew Quarter 54 in the lottery drawing and were assigned the property that the Campbell House is on. Also still standing is the original chicken brooder.

Palmer town square has many historic buildings and monuments teaching about this time in United States history.
