About Susan Hager

A city boy and country girl growing up in two different places (the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Mexico City), we both share a love for beautiful places where we can take long walks, dip our feet in water, and meet new people. We have traveled around the world in our work with Fair Trade yet knew the minute we visited this area, this would be our special place to build our cabin.

Susan Hager purchased this cabin in 2012

Why Susan Hager chose Northern Virginia - Washington DC

We love the beach where we live in Delaware yet we missed seeing trees and wildlife and hiking in the mountains. Now our dream of building a mountain retreat has come true. We choose Sperryville because it is the perfect place to relax, enjoy nature and has many interesting places to visit. We decided to share our little cabin with others so they, too, can love the hollow!

What makes this cabin unique

The focus of the cabin are the big porches with comfy rocking chairs to read, a hammock to nap, and tables to eat outside in the screened part. At night we have a campfire outside and a lovely glass-front wood stove to take the chill off. A loft to do yoga or mediate adds to the deep relaxation we all need from our hectic lives. A fully equipped kitchen also lets us take time to prepare a great meal.

Cozy and new

  • 5 of 5

My family and I truly enjoyed our stay at Susan's cabin. The setting was so serene as we could hear the water from the nearby river rushing. The cabin itself so new and beautifully designed with great quality and taste. All of the decor with tons of imports were so cute and creative. The space was perfect for the 4 of us to cook, play, relax, and sleep well.

Wonderfully relaxing!

  • 5 of 5

We had the most lovely time in your Sweet Mountain Retreat (July 24-26). This home is so well appointed and comfortable with all the modern amenities to make a stay in the country so relaxing. We've done a lot of back backpacking out West so we know what 'roughing it' entails, but your place was luxurious - thank you for sharing it with us. Not a single detail has been overlooked at this property...from the gourmet kitchen to the expansive porches (including a fully screened side one) to the stacks of helpful travel books. It's proximity to the park and the Thornton River, which was excellent fishing water, made it even better.

Restful and beautiful retreat!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our more than comfortable stay. So nice to be without the intrusion of cell phones, Wi-Fi, and TV and the noises of the city. Loved the porch, even in the cold and rain.

Beautiful getaway

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I enjoyed the three days we spent at the cabin. The road from the highway leading to the cabin takes you further and further into the hollow and and quickly envelopes you in wooded serenity. What we liked doing most was walking the Thornton River Trail in Shenandoah Park, which is accessed at the end of the gravel road a short distance from the house. Food, bottled water, toiletries can be purchased at the Corner Store in Sperryville - about ten minutes away. Don't let the outside of the store scare you off - it's funky, but it is well stocked, especially with good beer and fine wine. When we returned home we both moped around our house for a few days wishing we were back rocking on the porch at the Sweet Mountain Retreat.

Beautiful and Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

Three girlfriends and I stayed for a weekend and it was perfect. The home is beautiful and warm. Interesting art on the walls. And the best part, the wrap around porch with hammock. Each of us had a great nap! We listened to the river flow while enjoying cocktails. The place is very clean and comfortable. And the owners are great. Anything you need they are right there.

We hiked the Keyser Run Fire Road-Little Devil Stairs Trails which start right at the end of the road so we didn't have to drive which was great because two of us got tired and could hike back before my other two friends. There are so many trails to choose from, we can't wait to come back.

Fantastic Place

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I needed to get away from the city spur of the moment and since we've never visited Shenandoah we decided to check it out. We booked this quickly, the owner got back to us immediately and what a wonderful place. I'd decribe it with the 3 cs: cozy, comfortable and charming - a sweet retreat indeed. My favorite is the wrap around porch, my wife's fav was the fair trade teas the owners provide. It has everything you need.

We got there in the evening and had the next day to relax. The owners have brochures of everything in the area and with so many choices we couldn't decide. So we called them (phone number is conveniently posted on the refrigerator) for advice. With Susan's help, we enjoyed a perfect day.

For DC folks like us, this little treasure is right in our backyard (about an hour or so drive). We can't wait to come back.
