Character cottage in friendly village on the Somerset coast, close to Exmoor.

Bedrooms 2
Property type house
Minimum Stay 0 - 7 nights

About the property

Comfy 2 bedroom holiday cottage in quiet spot close to marina and shops.

The Square is one of a group of cottages overlooking a pretty garden, in a quiet corner just off Watchet centre in Somerset, a few yards from the marina and steam railway. It's convenient for shops, restaurants, pubs and is a perfect base for exploring nearby Exmoor, the Quantocks and Devon.

The historic seaside village of Watchet is a popular holiday destination in the lovely area of West Somerset, known for its pretty countryside, characterful villages and coastline, a fossil-hunter's haven. Coleridge wrote one of his most famous poems whilst in Watchet.

The 200-year-old cottage is well-equipped and nicely furnished for a family of 4, with thoughtful touches throughout. It has 2 bedrooms with one double bed, 2 singles, and a baby's travel cot. Children are welcome, but it is not suitable for toddlers or the disabled due to the stairs. Ideal for a couple or small family.

Sleeps 4, a maximum of 3 adults.

Free parking permit is included for use in many area carparks, plus we have unlimited complimentary WiFi.

Watchet offers a variety of activities to suit all interests and ages, including miles of public footpaths, deep sea fishing and several excellent cafes and restaurants, family-friendly pubs such as The Bell and Star Inns, Chives delicatessen, boutiques and antique shops. Its attractive marina and esplanade are a popular destination to relax and watch the sunset. The ancient little seaport of Watchet has a fascinating history told in two interesting museums, from the invasion of the Vikings to Romantic poet Coleridge, who was said to have composed The Rime of the Ancient Mariner here.

West Somerset is a beautiful holiday destination, with activities and attractions for all tastes and weather – beaches, quaint villages, horseback riding, fishing, antique shopping, Exmoor crafts, a vintage steam railway, a dramatic coastal walk, and historic sites like Dunster Castle. From Watchet you are in easy reach of Blue Anchor just 2 miles away with its pebbly beach and swimming pool, a fun excursion on the West Somerset Steam Railway, the long stretch of sandy beach at Minehead, Cheddar Caves and Gorge, Clarks Village outlet shopping in Street, Tropiquaria zoo a few minutes away, cider farms such as Sheppy's, and the beautiful holiday areas of Exmoor and the Quantocks.

About Joy Court

West Somerset has been my family's home for several hundred years. I spent my childhood there, then marriage took me away to the US. I bought the cottage so I could spend my holidays in my favorite part of the world! I love returning to Somerset and Watchet and look forward to living there fulltime in the not-too-distant future. In the meantime I enjoy sharing my home with guests from all around Europe. I hope you enjoy my cottage as much as I do.

Joy Court purchased this house in 1999

Why Joy Court chose Watchet

When my cottage came up for sale I jumped at the chance to buy it, having passed by for years on my meanders around the characterful little town of Watchet. It's conveniently situated close to the harbour, with great pubs, shops, and boutiques nearby. It's also a quiet and relaxing retreat. I love to step out of the front door and within a minute be at the harbour.

What makes this house unique

The cottage is full of character, with low doorways and a remarkable wide set of stairs which I learned came from an old ship being broken down when Watchet was a working port. It's at least 200 years old, probably older, and was originally two cottages. It has provided a home for some of my family's antique furniture, carved by my great uncle. I have been restoring the cottage with the aim of retaining its charm and character.

A lovely cottage in the nice village of Watchet. We found it well equipped with good quality utensils

The beds were comfortable very which in our experience is unusual. The welcome pack was much appreciated. On one evening forgot to put parking permit ion the dashboard, ( BIG MISTAKE) Apart from that I would highly recommend staying at this property

Needs Updating.

  • 4 of 5

This cottage is in a lovely, friendly village and is close to all the amenities. It is literally yards away from the marina/harbour and the village pubs. The cottage itself is a little tired and needs a few touches to bring it up to standard. The creaky floorboards are par for the course in a cottage of this age but the loose banisters were a bit worrying. Virtually no TV reception but of course, this is not what you stay there for! We would have preferred less furniture in the living room, it was awkward to get in and out of the room but it was comfortable with plenty of books/DVD's etc. The beds were comfortable and the bathroom was big enough for our needs. No work surfaces in the kitchen was little awkward but again, we ate out most days. We had a small problem on the last day when the toilet stopped working but the owner did make an effort to get it fixed, she was let down by the plumber and we decided we couldn't stay without it working and so we left. She was very good and refunded our last night.

Perfectly situated old style cottage

  • 4 of 5

The Square lived up to its billing as being right in the centre of the village. It could not be more conveniently placed for all the shops and pubs/restaurants, of which there are quite a few.

The cottage itself is quaint, clean and well equipped and we thoroughly enjoyed our 4 nights in Watchet which is a good touring base for the Somerset/Devon coast and Exmoor.

We would recommend the Indian restaurant. Its food was excellent. We intend to stay again next year and would like to thank the owner, Joy for her speedy and helpful communication.

Nice characterful cottage, handy for the harbour

  • 4 of 5

This was an interesting cottage to stay, maybe a fisherman's cottage ? in the town but near the harbour and the sea. Clean and well kept. Also enjoyed walking on the hills, Cleeve Abbey, and Dunster Castle. Also supper at the White Horse Inn at Washford. Hope to come back in the summer so we can swim at Blue Anchor.

Great little cottage!

  • 5 of 5

Thanks for accommodating us at the last minute! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, were very comfortable and felt right at home. Really comfy bed and the shower looked brand new. Enjoyed the eclectic CD collection and DVDs. We discovered the flat screen TV plays the DVDs--that was new to us! The free WiFi was a nice bonus.

Watchet was lovely-several nice pubs (The Bell and Star had excellent food) and shops plus the marina was a great place to sit and watch the sunset.

We look forward to our next visit.

Very nice cottage

Very enjoyable stay again. Characterful old cottage just as described. It was neat and clean and a comfortable retreat on the couple of rainy days we had.

Great location in the centre of the village with some good shops and pubs nearby.

Will recommend and return.

Watchet is a historic port nestled at the foot of the Quantock Hills in West Somerset. Its harbour was recently turned into a beautiful marina and is a popular attraction. The Esplanade has also been enhanced with bronze sculptures including Coleridge's Ancient Mariner and one of Watchet most famous mariners 'Yankee Jack.' Watchet has two fascinating museums, a variety of shops, and a wide choice of eateries including pubs, cafes and restaurants.

Watchet is close to such attractions as Dunster Castle, Tropiquaria, Minehead and its beaches, Exmoor and The Quantocks. The West Somerset Steam Railway runs year-round. Beaches in the area are famous for fossil-hunting.
