|Minimum Stay||4 nights|
Built in 2000 to the highest standards and selected by Alistair Sawday in his guidebooks 'Mountains of Europe' and now also in 'Self Catering Places in France', Chalet Kiana is located in a quiet residential area, just 530 metres up from the centre (church) of Les Contamines-Montjoie.
Nestling beside the Mont Blanc Massif and at the end of the Val Montjoie, the village has 120km of piste ski-ing, plus plenty of highly-rated off-piste ski-ing, stunning walking and an impressive range of outdoor activities in summer. Les Contamines is rated by Michelin guidebook ('French Alps') as a 3-star (highest rating) winter sports resort. It has maintained its traditional atmosphere whilst offering a good selection of shops, bars and restaurants.
Les Contamines is a traditional, Savoyard village which is as popular in the summer as it is in the winter. As well as the downhill ski-ing and snowboarding there is a good cross-country ski area. For non-skiers there is a selection of good walks, and snowshoe expeditions; dog sledding, ski-doo trips and ice-skating are also available. Situated just over an hour from Geneva airport, and about 8 hours' drive from Calais, it is easy to reach by air or road. There are also good TGV train links, in the ski season, direct from Paris to St. Gervais-les-Bains le Fayet, a 20-minute taxi ride from the chalet. Megeve is 20 kms away and Chamonix is 33 kms away but Megeve's pistes are easily approached from St. Gervais (10 mins. drive).
Summer activities: Situated at the top of the valley (5 minutes by car, 10 minutes by bike) is a leisure park (Le Pontet) with WTA championship tennis courts, mountain-biking and aerial confidence courses for young people, a rock-climbing school, riding, archery, golf driving, and a small boating lake. A heated swimming lake and 'beach' are there too. Other more vigorous activities, such as rafting and paragliding, are available close by in the Mont Blanc Region. The Tour de France often passes within a short drive from the chalet.
Les Contamines is located in a renowned walking area and the chalet itself is less than 10 minutes' walk from the world famous GR5 and Tour du Mont Blanc routes. All walks in and around the village are well marked and cater for all levels of experience and fitness.
The main chalet has sauna & Jacuzzi, plus sun-facing terraces & balconies. The ground-floor apartment can only be rented with main chalet (for additional fee - please enquire). The main chalet is graded 4* by the Tourist Office.

We first came to Chalet Kiana in the summer of 2001, six months after the building had been completed. We loved the chalet and the village so much, we came back every winter (& many summers) after that, until we purchased it from the retiring owners, in Apr-08.
What makes Chalet Kiana so special are its views of the mountains, its exposure to long hours of sunshine, its large ensuite bedrooms (no low roofs in the bedrooms), its open-plan, double-height sitting/dining area, its separate, professional-standard kitchen, its separate media room (TV, DVD & iMac), the Jacuzzi and sauna...and its neighbours.
How lucky we were to stay in this beautiful chalet.
Chalet Kiana was a short drive uphill from the delightful town centre of Les Contamines. Although it was walking distance to the town, I am glad we had the flexibility of our own car to take us to the base of the slopes, as I don't enjoy carrying skis! Skis can be put in lockers up the mountain but we brought everything back at night - the boot warmers in the boot room ensuring dry and warm boots the next morning. The English owner provided excellent customer service. If anything is not quite up to standard, he wants to know and will deal with it straight away.
Chalet Kiana was extensively equipped and everything was good quality and in good working order. The beautifully appointed large bedrooms all had their own en suites. There were 11 in our party and all rooms were of equal high standard - no broom cupboards here! The maid service ensured a clean and tidy chalet, and she would prepare a meal for the evening if required.
The property was immaculate throughout, very clean and well maintained. The kitchen was well stocked, no shortages of any equipment whatsoever for our large party. We ate in most nights - either fondues or some delicious rotisserie chickens or pizzas from town, but also enjoyed a very pleaseant meal in town at O a la Bouche (excellent steaks) one night which was reasonably priced at about 35 euros per person for a 3 course meal with wine (about 24 euros without wine).
The picturesque chalet enjoyed breathtaking views. Spectacular in the snow but would be just as good in the summer.
The wide slopes of Les Contamines provided no end of excellent and varied skiing for the whole party, catering well for different abilities. Although we visited in January, there were no queues on any of the lifts, and the pistes were exceptionally well maintained in this snowsure resort. We found ski school to be surprisingly good value, and used it for lessons and guiding. A two hour lesson for 2 people cost 77 euros. The mountain restaurants were small and traditional serving many delicious local Savoyard dishes.
Les Contamines is a delightful French town - the locals were all friendly and helpful.
I would strongly recommend the chalet and the resort. Some of our party have already booked Chalet Kiana for a summer holiday with their young children. I will definitely be returning to ski. The best skiing holiday I have had without a doubt.
I've been coming to Chalet Kiana for six years, having only missed 2016 because of a clash. We share the chalet with a group of cyclists every summer and I spend a week or two being chalet chef. The village and surrounding areas are stunning and the chalet has everything you could ever wish for. Stylish and well equipped and appointed. Very efficiently run and guests are exceptionally well looked after. Would not hesitate to recommend it any time of the year.
Large, well equipped holiday house in the real authentic chalet style. The bedrooms are large and spacious, each with its own bathroom. Large living room and dining area, perfect to have supper all together!
The sauna and jacuzzi are just perfect after a intense day on the skis lopes... There is also the possibility to order fresh bread and croissants and have them delivered every morning at the door!
The little town of Les Contamines is only a 10 min walk away, if you want to do some grocery shopping or buy a cup of coffee.
Would surely recommend this property!
An amazing chalet, allowing full relaxation at night and great location for access to ski slopes during the daytime. the facilities make the whole experience a joy to behold. It will be impossible for me to stay away next year!
This was our first visit to Les Contamines. We rented both the Chalet and Apartment as our party consisted of 3 families. It was absolutely ideal. It was very comfortable and extremely well equipped. The kitchen was perfect for us to cater for all of our party (14 adults and 2 children) and the dining/living area was large enough for all of us. The evenings were so relaxed we did not feel the need to eat out!
Les Contamines itself has plenty of shops and restaurants. The skiing is varied and you have the option of driving to St Gervais or Megeve if you fancy a change.
A real gem.
This was our group's second trip to Chalet Kiana, and we came for roughly the same week both years. The fact that we've come back for more sums up our feelings about the place. The Chalet is perfect: It comfortably sleeps 12 people, but there are no 'duff' rooms. Quite often one can go to a chalet and find some people are in a massive room with everything, while others are in a broom cupboard. Not so with Kiana, as all the rooms are equally appealing, and all with their own bathroom.
The chalet itself has a very lovely feel, so much so that we barely went out to eat this year! We just got home from skiing, had our tea and cake (cake collected from shops on way back from the lifts) then cracked open the wine, and had dinner in. Perfect. All our team agree that it is one of the best chalets they've ever stayed in, and there have been a few!
We thought we'd have a little look at Megeve this year, not because of better skiing, (which it isn't) but because a couple of the girls in our group wanted a look at the clothes shops! (of which there are plenty) Although it's only about 1/2 an hour drive from Les Contamines, we just drove down the valley to St. Gervais which takes about 10-15 mins, and then took the bubble lift from there, which emerges at the top of the Megeve ski area and overlooks the town. This is a nice little excursion, if you have lots of money to spend, but the skiing is no better than Les Conts, and you get the same food (on the slopes) in Les Conts for half the price!
As you can probably gather, we're great fans of the skiing in Les Contamines. There are plenty of runs to keep you happy all week, and certainly in January, there are never any queues! I don't think we've ever been to a resort where the combination of great skiing and no queuing was better.
There's not much more to say, and we can't think of a single negative. We will certainly be back next year! We were even hesitant about leaving too good a review, as we feel Les Contamines in general, and Chalet Kiana in particular are real little secrets, and we worried that if too many people discover it, we may have to 'fight' for our week in future!
We are located 530 metres up from the church (centre of the village). The (free) bus stops 70 metres from the front door. This takes you to the lifts in the morning (08.30 last season) and back again in the afternoon (several times)
From centre of St Gervais Les Bains, after the church on your right, follow road round sharp right bend. Take second exit off roundabout, D902, opposite Petit Casino supermarket, following signs for Les Contamines-Montjoie.
Once in Les Contamines, turn left between Bank Populaire and Petit Casino, up route de la Frasse. Go round 2 tight bends (more than 90 degrees) and past the Hotel Clef de Champs on your right, continue round 3 more tight bends, and the track to Chalet Kiana is the second on the left, just below a big, old farm. The number 1073 marks our wooden letterbox.
Other Activities: Windsurfing, rafting and other water activities are 20 minutes drive away
Ski: Located in the Mont Blanc Region, Les Contamines has a great ski area with 120km of uncrowded, well-groomed pistes (most above 1900m) and an excellent snow record. In fact, the snow record is so good that neighbouring resorts like Megeve come to use our pistes late in the season. The pistes are confidence-inspiring for beginners and intermediate skiers. Les Contamines is famous for its off-piste ski-ing, where the sounds of lifts and people disappear! There is a snow park for boarders, and a good selection of mountain restaurants. The slopes are easily accessible with the lifts only a few minutes' drive away. There is an excellent ski school, with English speaking instructors. For the more adventurous the famous Vallee Blanche is within half an hours' drive. Other winter activities available in the village include: ski de fond/Nordic, snow-mobiling, snow-shoeing, curling, ice-skating & dog-sledding.
