About the property

3 Bedroom 1.5 Bath hand crafted from native woods, jacuzzi, fireplace, privacy

Explore Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and experience the Aloha of Hawaii Island while staying at this gorgeous, hand crafted home near Volcano Golf Course & Country Club. Nestled amongst the native Koa and Ohia Lehua Trees with a sweeping view of Mauna Loa and a steady serenade from the numerous native birds, this Hawaiian retreat will envelope you with a complete sense of peace and relaxation. Hale Ka Lehua was designed by owners John & Mindi Clark and personally built by John which shows in every well thought out detail.

The extensive use of glass gives one the feeling of being outside while within the warm comfort of indoors...perhaps snuggled next to the wood burning fireplace.

This 3 bedroom, 1.5 bath retreat has a completely private master bedroom located outside of the main home off of the front lanai. This sweet room has a full sized memory foam bed with a native garden view, 1/2 bath, night stand, reading lights over the bed and a small space heater for extra chilly winter nights.

The main floor bedroom has a queen memory foam bed, a small desk and closet and is located across the hall from the full bath (both Tub & shower).

The upstairs 'room with a view'' is a multi-purpose room with a full size Futon sofa bed (a real matress not a cotton one along with a memory foam mattress pad topper) that can be used as a reading or game room, a bedroom or a perfect place to practice Yoga, meditate or simply have some quiet time enjoying the full, mountain view of Mauna Loa through Frank Lloyd Wright inspired seamless corner windows.

The kitchen boasts gorgeous 'Flower Garden' granite, gas stove and oven and is completely stocked with Le Creuset cookware, small appliances and Riedel wine glasses.

French doors spill out from the solid ohia wood floored living & dining room onto the wrap around lanai that has outside dining and gas BBQ grill as well.

We invite you to come enjoy the beauty and quietude of this beautiful brand new home while exploring the amazing dynamics of Kilauea, the world's most active volcano located within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

The 'Dry side' of Volcano keeps you out out of what can be a constant drizzle & fog that shrouds the eastern flank. The golf course area is located just beyond the crest of 4,000' and dips you into the Kau side of Volcano where the temps will still range from the 40's to the mid 70's but with far more sun! We are 3 miles past the entrance to the park, but you can walk to the edge of the caldera from our home in just 20 minutes...a perfect place to sip a glass of wine while soaking in the view of Halema'uma'u and getting a glimpse of the powers of Madame Pele.

Both the Volcano Golf Course and Volcano Winery are within a few minutes walk from the house.

About Melinda Clark

We moved to the Hawaiian village of Kalapana located on the SE corner of the Big Island in 1981 to escape the freeways of So. California. We were blessed to live, surf and paddle canoe here for 8 years before Madame Pele covered this community with lava in the late 80's & early 90's. We lost our home to the lava but our orchid farm,'Kalapana Tropicals' that we started in 1987 remains in tact and is now just one of 2 orchid nurseries that we own and operate...the other being in Kurtistown where we have lived since 1990. Free orchid farm tours for our guests!

Melinda Clark purchased this cabin in 2009

Why Melinda Clark chose Volcano

We love the Volcano area for it's cool weather, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and hiking and cycling opportunities. It's a quick get-a-way for us as it is only 20 minutes from our home in Kurtistown and we feel like we are in another world!

What makes this cabin unique

We selected this property because it is located on the 'dry side' of Volcano, it's bounty of native Koa and Ohia trees that are filled with birds. John took great care in removing only enough trees to build and the home is designed with a bedroom off the lanai to save trees and give this home a tree house feel.

Stop - This Is It

  • 5 of 5

This house is even better than the pictures. The house itself is beautiful - clearly a labor of love for Melinda and John, who are the perfect hosts. It is perfectly private, surrounded by beautiful Ohi'a trees and flowers. The first night we were there, we could see the glow from the Hale Ma'uma'u crater in the distance. (Though air quality was completely fine the whole time... no worries on that score. Apparently the prevailing winds blow away from this spot.) The location is perfect for really exploring Volcanoes National Park at your leisure - there's so much to experience there. The beds are all very comfortable (including the futon upstairs). Also, SHARP KNIVES! (The vacation rental holy grail.) People clearly cook in this kitchen. We felt absolutely at home, would recommend to everyone, and dream about coming back someday.

Perfect home for a family vacation

  • 5 of 5

This home is breath taking. It feels like heaven surrounded by a Hawaiian paradise. The kitchen is fully stocked, the beds are comfortable, the floor plan is open, clean and inviting, and the outdoor patio is absolutely perfect for your morning coffee and breakfast. The house has the feel of sleeping in a tree house surrounded by the most beautiful Hawaiian plants and flowers. The hot tub is the perfect way to end your busy day of sightseeing or hiking through volcano park. John and Melinda were so helpful with informing us on things to do on the island during our visit and went over and beyond to make sure our stay at their home was perfect. If you chose this property I can guarantee you will not be disappoint.

Great experience at Volcano National Park

  • 5 of 5

The home was exactly as pictured and described. Two comfortable beds plus a futon upstairs. Terrific small touches - entertainment options, basic groceries and cleaning products. We wished we could have stayed a week instead of 3 days.

beautiful house with everything you need to feel at home

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay. The house was clean, had all necessary supplies, a large yard, great wrap-around porch, beautiful flowers, jacuzzi, etc. It was a great place to stay and "get away" to a more serene environment. The volcano winery is just down the road and perfect for a wine tasting as well!
