Further information: Playa Blanca is located at the southern tip of Lanzarote, around a forty minute drive from the sole island airport at Arrecife. The resort is the newest on the island, built some time after Costa Teguise and Puerto del Carmen to the north in the 1990s. But it has rapidly emerged to become the second most popular destination on Lanzarote after the livelier Puerto del Carmen. Thanks to the fact that it enjoys a wonderful micro-climate which delivers the best weather on the island. Although Playa Blanca is a tourist town it still retains the peaceful village atmosphere and most week days in the village centre you can watch the local fishermen bring in their catch and sell it on to restaurants and the fishmonger in the port area.
The resort could perhaps be best described as comprising three bays, within one much larger bay. And at the heart of each of these bays is a delightful beach. So walking along the seafront promenade from west to east visitors first encounter Playa Dorada, the largest of the resorts golden sandy beaches. Which is backed by a decent selection of bars and shops. A further five to ten minutes stroll brings you to the small beach of Playa Blanca – White Beach – from which the resort takes its name. This is where tourism first took off here and the beach is very close to a wide selection of restaurants and the main shopping precinct in Calles Limones. Which is also where the official Tourist Information Office is located.
