Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday apartment in Villefranche-sur-Mer - Waterfront Penthouse

Newly renovated 1 bdrm/sleeping mezzanine/1 bath, sleeps 2-4

The Waterfront Penthouse is in one of the village's most historic (and most photographed) buildings. The views are captivating- intimate, yet panoramic, from the wraparound balcony. And at night, you can hear the waves gently lapping the shore and the trickle of the lion fountain in the plaza below. The apartment is decorated in rich Provençal colors, and furnished with antiques from our travels and art from our local community. The location is ideally situated in the charming Old Town of Villefranche. You're just steps away from the water's edge, the shops, and all the best restaurants.

About the area: Villefranche-sur-Mer is a traditional Niçoise fishing village dating back to 1295 and anchored by two cosmopolitan cities on either side: Nice to the west and Monaco to the east. One could not speak about Villefranche without exclaiming its physical beauty. Surrounding its large, natural (and world famous) bay are cliffs and steep hillsides, brimming with olive and citrus trees, Mediterranean pines, and bougainvillea flowering plants. This lush vegetation meets the water’s edge, where the shades of blue are as dazzling as a sapphire necklace. The bay of Villefranche is surrounded by two of the most beautiful Caps in the Mediterranean: Cap Ferrat and Cap de Nice. These stunning limestone peninsulas- sprinkled with luxurious villas and lavish gardens- protect and embrace our bay. Amidst all of this is the charming village, hugging the coastline with colorful buildings. During a stroll through the maze-like streets of the Old Town, you will see beautiful balconies decorated with potted plants, fresh laundry flapping in the sea breeze, and hear the sounds of church bells and music wafting through the corridors. And of course, what description of Villefranche would be complete without mentioning the boating scene! Watching the comings and goings- from cruise ships to yachts to fishing boats- could be a full time occupation!

There is no shortage of things to do during your stay! And we are always happy to make recommendations. That said, part of the pleasure of being here is taking in the lifestyle of the village and the area: getting up and going for a walk or swim at the beach, shopping at the fresh markets (on Wednesdays and Saturdays), sitting on your balcony and admiring the beautiful scenery, exploring the village and all of its little quarters... Guests frequently come with a long list of all the things they will do, and then a couple of days into the trip, they decide to reduce the list and just enjoy the lifestyle.

We own six beautiful apartments in the Old Town and one villa set atop the hillside. If you're looking for a special home away from home, please check out our website- www.rivieraexperience.com- and choose the perfect fit for you! Fantastic Waterfront Apartment and Location

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I, along with another couple, stayed at the Waterfront Penthouse for three weeks from mid-Feb. to mid-March. From the unbelievable bay views from the balcony to the terrific location in town and the easy access to the train, I do not think there exists a more lovely apartment in Villefranche.

Every item and amenity was exactly as Shelley, the owner, had promised. Shelley was invaluable and completely accessible in assisting us throughout our stay.

We had many memorable mornings and evenings cooking in the well stocked kitchen and admiring the views. Also recognize that within easy walking distance of the apartment door is easy access to a patisserie, cafes, restaurants and a small grocery store.

We spent many terrific days exploring Villefranche, nearby Cap Ferrat, Beaulieu, Nice and the Friday market in Ventimiglia, IT. We also made many overnight trips to such places as Lake Como and Cinque Terre in Italy.

Villefranche is a lovely small French village and the Waterfront Penthouse apartment is not to be missed.

Save your dollars and/or euros and go!

After weeks of researching apartments we decided to go with the Penthouse Apartment and it's the best housing decision we've ever made. (We have been to various areas in France over 20 times in past 30 years).

The views are

unbeatable, location perfect, super clean and maintained, quiet nights, and right in the heart of charming Villefranche sur Mer. A veritable home away from home. Importantly, wonderfully comfortable beds.

Shelley met us on arrival and lived up to all the positive and enthusiastic reviews we had read. She provides all the information one needs on the coffee table: hiking guides, best restaurants, bakery and grocery stores, train and bus schedules. A well stocked English library with travel guides and novels kept us entertained when we chose a rest day. The entire area is so enchanting that you want to walk everywhere, eat in all the good

restaurants and there are 4 excellent ones within minutes of the apartment. Swim, kayak, snorkel, hike, or just sit on the balcony watching the sail boats come and go. Knowing Shelley is available when needed for any questions on the apartment, town, or travel suggestions made it a stress free

vacation. We eagerly look forward to our stay next May which will be longer!!! In the meantime I see Villefranche and the beautiful apartment on my computer screen several times a day and think of all the joyful memories we have. If this particular apartment is booked please check out Shelley's other properties on her website:

Beautiful penthouse with stunning views!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Waterfront Penthouse. On arrival we were met by Shelley and Valentina who explained in great detail how everything worked. The apartment is clean and well maintained and has all the equipment and facilities for a perfect holiday .It is tastefully furnished and creates a unique atmosphere. The views from the balcony are stunning and breakfast on the balcony, watching the boats, was our favourite time of day. There are plenty of bars and restaurants to suit all price ranges within walking distance. The nearby train station means other places along the coast are also easily accessible. We would really recommend this apartment and hope to return soon.

Great service, great views, great location

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we arrived by taxi from the Nice train station

and we're met by property manager, Shelley Dobyns, we knew our two weeks in "Waterfront Penthouse" was going to be the highlight of our 5 week French holiday. The balcony with fantastic views is the main attraction but we were also so appreciative of the well appointed, well designed and well organized living spaces. The main room (dining area, living room and kitchen) opens to the long balcony via three french doors. The bedroom has great storage and a big window that opens onto a small historic courtyard. We used the upper loft bedroom as well and found the bed very comfortable and the storage area more than adequate. Waking up to sky and sea views from the loft were extraordinary.

The location, a few blocks from the train station, makes it perfect for taking trips all along the Côte d'Azur. We also used the convenient regional 1.50 Euro bus for many excursions including a wonderful day spent at the Rothschild Mansion and Cap Ferrat.

Working with Shelley and Riccardo could not have been easier and we are already planning a return visit. We are craving more magical mornings and evenings on the best balcony on the French Riviera!

Impressed - Beautiful

  • 5 of 5

Could not agree more with the other reviews!

The apartment is beautifully located which includes a most fantastic view with so much activity around the bay to while away the hours on the balcony, furnished with traditional furniture and soft furnishings giving a real French ambiance, along with bedrooms which are fitted with the most comfortable beds and soft cotton bedding, some of the best I have slept on away from home.

After searching for hours on the internet to find an appropriate property for our holiday in Villefranche, found the Rivera experience apartments which looked a cut above the rest, (my husband and are of the same thinking in that a major part of our holiday is where we stay) and we were not disappointed with Shelley’s apartment!!, we even juggled our holiday dates around so we could stay in one of them. Shelley adds the personal touch to your visit before and during your holiday. I can recommend the apartment for a fantastic visit that you will not be disappointed in.

Million Dollar View

  • 5 of 5

We arrived at the apartment after being picked up at the airport which was arranged by Shelley.

After climbing 2 flights of stairs, we entered the apartment and we were blown away by the view from the balcony. The apartment overlooks the bay with sailboats moored. You can see across the bay to the other side.

The apartment was just as Shelley described. The bed was very comfortable and the bedroom had plenty of storage for our clothes. The washer worked fine and we hung our clothes on the clothesline just like the locals.

The apartment was very clean and we had all the utensils and dishes we needed for cooking and we even used the grill for steaks.

There was a small grocery store near the apartment that had all the basics and a great selection of French wines at very reasonable prices (5-9 euros).

There was also a boulangerie close by that had good baguettes and croissants.

Shelley's notebook listed several restaurants in the area and we tried some of them and all were very good.

We spent every morning having coffee on the balcony and we never got tired of the view. We felt right at home in the apartment.

Shelley had a family emergency and was not there while we were. She had a friend of hers, Melinda, show us around and she was available to answer questions.

We would not hesitate to come back and stay in anyone of Shelley's rental, but the Penthouse will always be our favorite. .

The Waterfront Penthouse is located in the Old Town on the waterfront at the end of one of the main pedestrian streets. Villefranche-sur-Mer is nestled between Nice and Monaco (10 minutes from Vieux Nice, 20-25 minutes from Monaco). Although surrounded by a diverse, exciting cosmopolitan environment, it is still an authentic Niçoise village. I know, I live here, and it's hard to believe it is still that way-- wonderful! Within close and easy access are Antibes, Cannes, St. Paul de Vence, Grasse, Mougins, and just a bit further, St. Tropez, Ramatuelle, Bormes les Mimosas, or Aix, Arles, Avignon and all the villages of Provence. Take a ferry from Nice Port to Corsica (3 hours on the fast ferry), or head to Italy and visit Ventimiglia, San Remo, the Vallee de Roya, Portofino, Cinque Terre... But if you stay in Villefranche and the neighboring towns of Beaulieu-sur-Mer, St. Jean Cap Ferrat, Eze, and La Turbie, you'll exhaust a week or more just exploring and enjoying these lovely villages. Most of these sites are easy to access without a car. And if you are here to attend the French language institute, Institut Français, it is a 15 minute walk away.

We welcome children, but this property is not safe for young children due to the balcony, which measures 5-stories above. The stairwell to the mezzanine has open rises to the stairwell below, which is made of slate stairs-so very hard. We suggest infants or children over the age of 5 or 6 that are fairly calm. Also, there is no AC, but we do provide fans, which are often only needed a couple of weeks during the summer, as there is always a light sea breeze the rest of the time.
