Overview

About the property

En suite master bedroom, Swiss twin, study/bedroom, living room with kitchen.

Waldbort (woodside), a quiet but convenient lane 400 metres from station, just by the nursery slopes. Residences Waldbort is a luxury chalet with private ski room and heated bootroom. Hohturen is a lovingly fitted first floor apartment with a large south facing sun terrace. Ideal for four people, or families up to 6 people as the study/bedroom has twin futons. Dining and seating facilities for 6/8, newly fitted, finest quality linen and towels. Living/kitchen/dining area is thoughtfully fitted to please those with culinary skills (but no microwave). Cable TV, DVD, CD's (mainly classics), wifi access, books, games. just beside the piste to Wengen, the terrace with views to the Jungfrau is an excellent place for an end of run beer, barbecue, or evening meals in the summer watching the setting sun. A short ski from just outside the apartment and down to the cablecar, Les Residences Waldbort are ideally placed for that early morning start. In Summer enjoy the highest lido in the Alps, pure crystal waters and fantastic views, just behind the chalet.

Family Groups: Wengen is a very popular family resort and has excellent amenities for non-skiers and children. Residences Waldbort has two other apartments available, each for two people, which can be very convenient if, say, parents/grandparents wanted to come too. The Nursery slopes are right in the village (just beside our apartment) and many families spend 'three generation' holidays in Wengen. With grans and granddads playing on the nursery slopes with their grandchildren whilst the 'children' enjoy unencumbered ski days! There's even the possibility to build a snowman on your own terrace.

In Summer the open air pool is so close it is like having your own, without all the fuss. There is a full time lifeguard, so children can play safely within calliing reach of home when lunch or teatime comes; whilst for parents there's a very convenient poolside cafe/bar. Being a traffic free resort, Wengen is a perfect place for young children to explore on their own.

About Simon and Jo Williamson

We live in Broadway, Worcestershire where Simon is Chairman of a Financial Planning company and until 2015 was Honorary Director of the Broadway Arts Festival. Jo is a retired teacher and a Lay Minister.

Simon, who was brought up in Kenya, first came to Wengen in 1972, fell in love with the place and has been there most years since.

We have two children, Gwen who is a teacher and married to a doctor of mathematics, and Joe who is an army officer, qualified ski instructor and captain of his regiment's ski team. In 2014 he won the Army 'Downhill' and in 2015 was Combined Services Champion in the Downhill and the Super G, in Meribel.

Grand-daughter Jemima arrived in July 2012 and first visited Wengen that August!

Uncle Joey can't wait to get her on skis!

Simon and Jo Williamson purchased this apartment in 2008

Why Simon and Jo Williamson chose Eiger, Mönch & Jungfrau

We watched the old chalet on this site being taken down. The views are so stunning and the location so convenient that we made enquiries as to what was going to replace it. The rest, as they say, is history.

We were able to design our own space, choose our own fittings and fit it out not to be over the top 'posh', but practical and homely with some personal things from England and Switzerland.

What makes this apartment unique

They say there are three things to look for in a property. Location, location, location.

Location:1. The Bernese Oberland is one of the most beautiful places in the world (official, it's a Unesco World Heritage site) and Wengen is one of the most attractive villages in the Oberland. The views of the mountains from our terrace are amazing.

Location: 2 - Just 400 metres from the station and at the top of the nursery slopes, Waldbort is really convenient, but also quiet and peaceful. Few properties have a terrace - we've been told ours is the best in Wengen!

Location: 3 - Waldbort is right beside the ski slopes, so no hauling skis and boots around. Cross the lane to the slopes, clip in and away! At the end of the day ski back to where you started, clip out and stagger across the lane to enjoy something cool whilst watching the reflection of the sunset from the terrace (did we mention the terrace before?!)

Location: 4 - Waldbort means 'wood side' and the paths to the woods just above us leave right from our door. There are a range of walks, view points, picnic tables, barbecue sites and more. Also, we have a lovely gas barbecue. Yes, it's on the terrace.....................

Fantastic family home.

  • 5 of 5

This was a return visit to Hohturen, this time with our one year old daughter in tow. We found the area just as wonderful for a young family as we had done for a couple. The swimming pool is a bit chilly, but we enjoyed lazing in the sun and the occasional dip with a wetsuit on! The Falken staff arranged a cot and high chair for her which were great, and the chalet is equipped with plenty of plastic plates/bowls etc to make meal times easy for us. We enjoyed the children's books, too - it's obviously a much loved family home.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for the review. It is so rewarding to know that our apartment appeals so much to all ages, and that it is loved just as much in the summer as the winter. I'm assuming it was just the baby who wore the wetsuit - it's not THAT cold (although I admit the pool shower feels as though it's just come from the glacier!) It's great for youngsters in the winter - you'll have noticed how close the nursery slopes are to the apartment and there are sledges in the guest room for the use of guests. You'll just have to go in the winter, too!

Perfect

We had a wonderful week in beautiful Wengen in Chalet Hohturen.

The apartment is very centrally located, it was very clean, well mentained and well furnitured. The large balcony is south facing and has a beautiful view over the mountains.

We've come to Wengen for more than 20 years now (my husband even learned to ski in Wengen as a child) and it keeps being as magnificent and magical as the first time we stayed in Wengen.

Together with our three children, Chalet Hohturen has been a fantastic holiday home during our winter holidays.

We love to come back again!

Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here - the appartment is equipped with everything you could possibly want (better than our own home!), was spotlessly clean and is clearly lovingly cared for. The large terrace is perfect for sitting reading books in the sunshine, especially with a G&T after a long walk in the mountains. Wengen is a delight, plenty of lovely hotels with restaurants if you don't want to eat in, and many activities for people of all ages and abilities. We (being fairly young and fit!) used the via ferrata from Murren which was quite an experience! We would highly recommend this appartment and are greatly looking forward to visiting again this winter.

Owner's Response: We are really pleased that Gwen and her husband enjoyed the apartment and the setting so much. It's good to know our apartment is kept so clean and tidy when we can't always be there to keep an eye on it ourselves. We're sure they will enjoy the transport arrangements we have arranged to take our guests from the station to the apartment on arrival in the winter. Tip for winter. Leave the gin and tonic on the terrace in the snow - no need to add ice - and enjoy the fabulous view of the Jungfrau!

A super flat in a perfect village

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a week during February and had a fantastic time. The flat itself is spacious, very well-equipped and extremely comfortable, with every facility we needed. It is very close to the end of the ski run (one of the closest, in fact) and also very handy for the village. The arrangements with the owners and local hosts could not have been smoother or more friendly.

Wengen itself is probably the nicest place in the world. We have been going in the summer for many years and the walking is simply brilliant; we have now also enjoyed 4 winter trips and have really enjoyed learning to ski there.

Owner's Response: We're so glad that Matthew and his family enjoyed the apartment and Wengen so much. Like them, we've enjoyed going to the village for years and were delighted to find an apartment that is so well placed for both summer and winter activities. WE know it's wonderful, but it's great when others feel the same way!

A personal view of Wengen, finding detail is easy! The Bernese Oberland is a World Heritage Site and simply one of the most beautiful places in the world. It is not the most extensive ski area in Europe, but there is great variety and there are challenging runs around. Equally, it's a great place for families. Parents with ambitious children can be sure they will get a great time skiing with Coggins, the mini section of the legendary Downhill Only Ski Club. Why has Wengen pulled us and our now adult children back for nearly forty years? The charm, the history, the romance of skiing and walking in view of the massive Eiger Nordwand, the beauty of sunrise and sunset on the Jungfrau. The awe of the Lauberhorn downhill run. Old world courtesy. Alp horns, cow bells, fresh milk and cheese. Traditional 'fest' days, flags. Walks in Alpine meadows, picnics by rushing streams, barbecues in forest glades - you really have to breathe it in to understand, but it's why we've made it our second home

Other Activities: Base jumping, Via Ferrata, Sledge run, Cog railway to Jungfraujoch.
