About Ray Culin

My wife and I manage the woodworking operation of Zepsa Industries in Mamaroneck, NY. We love spending long weekends on the Vineyard where we play golf, kayak, swim, windsurf and enjoy the great restaurants.

Ray Culin purchased this house in 1970

Why Ray Culin chose Vineyard Haven

My Architect father designed the house which is heated by solar energy in the winter. My mother and father built most of it themselves, with reclaimed material found on the Island, after my father retired at 65. My mother is now 95 but we still have her visit for a week or two in the Spring. We are renting the house to keep it as a family retreat for years to come.

We have a caretaker who uses a basement apartment a couple days a week for maintenance purposes. Neil and Lori live off island but are responsible for maintaining the property for guests.

What makes this house unique

The house has a great deck with a beautiful view of the lagoon which is 2 miles long and is perfect for the Sunfish or Kayak/Canoe and Kayaks that are available to renters.

Clean, great location, lovely deck, very comfortable. Everything you need for a stay.

  • 5 of 5

This was our first time to Martha's Vineyard and the Lagoon Pond house was the perfect place to stay. Fantastic views, clean and great location. We rode bikes exploring the island and had breakfast on the deck each morning and most dinners. If you rent a vehicle, I do recommend renting a Sport SUV of some sort, the dirt road leading to the property has some areas that are uneven and some potholes and it might be difficult with a low riding sedan. However, this was only a minor issue and we can't wait to stay at the house again. We rented a jeep wrangler to explore the island and brought it with us on the ferry and had no issues.

Gorgeous views!

  • 4 of 5

This is a great house to get away for a "staycation". We spent a lot of time just relaxing at the house as opposed to being "out and about". We ate most meals out on the deck, as well as morning coffee and afternoon cocktails. There is plenty to do on/near the property, including kayaking/canoeing, biking, hiking, bird watching, watching the sun rise, etc. The property is fairly private and neighbors are friendly. (Our car battery needed a jump start one morning, and John from next door was nice enough to help us out!) Loved all the original artwork in the house as well. Beds and pillows were comfortable, and some of the furniture has been updated since the photos were taken.

Old school charmer on the lagoon

  • 5 of 5

We love this place because it reminds us of our summers as kids "back in the day". It's like a time warp and we enjoy that so much. We had one small problem with a/c and electrical system blowing out but caretakers were immediately available and we were able to find a quick-fix with an extension cord. The lagoon is beautiful and so restorative. We'll be back.

A perfect stay!

  • 5 of 5

We have been coming to the Vineyard for 45 years and we absolutely loved everything about this house! It was perfect for our small group of 2 couples with an occasional guest on the pullout. The wood detail in the house is beautiful and we spent lots of hours hanging out on the deck enjoying the view. The picnic table pictured has been replaced with more comfortable furniture. The landscaping is perfect so as to allow privacy from the neighbors. Though we didn't use the kayak/beach much, it was nice to have.

The only minor challenge we had is that we don't have a "Vineyard Car" and the dirt road got washed out in a rainstorm and our low slung vehicle bottomed out with each trip up and down. When we return we will rent a jeep or SUV to prevent that! The caretaker occasionally stayed in the apartment below the house but is very nice and assisted us with a few small issues.

A 5 star stay! We'll be back next summer!

Beautiful spot!

  • 5 of 5

Family of 5 (kids 8yrs to 18yrs) loved the Lagoon Pond House. Owner and manager were very responsive and the home came with bikes, kayak and everything needed for the stay. The location of the home (down a bumpy dirt road) was peaceful, woodsy (hardly could see the neighbors) and with beautiful views of the cove (it is far more than a mere "lagoon" - beautiful water for swimming and kayaking -- fantastic setting and view). Waking up to that view from the deck and having dinner on it after returning from a day on a beach, was amazing. The home was also in a good location (by car, bike or a jog) to reach Vinyard Haven and a bit further to Oak Bluffs. Could also explore other parts of the Island by car. The home itself was very nice; not fancy but clean and very charming, and the bedrooms were large and the extra pull out bed in the office was good for one of the kids. A great stay.
