About the property

Placerville Gold Country & High Sierra, California, USA ACCOMMODATIONS: House,

The Stage Coach Stop was built in 1872 by a man named Petri Cola. He and his wife were very involved and well-liked by the town’s people of Placerville, “Old Hangtown”. There were two mine shafts on the property (gold and diamond) and it also had a saw mill on site at one time. The house and property were used in the 1997 Stephen Baldwin movie; Mr. Murder, and the grounds are a crowd favorite in the annual Placerville Garden Tour, showcasing three water features, including Koi ponds and waterfalls. The house is a 2400 sq. ft., two level home with a 1000 sq. ft. multi-level back deck overlooking Weber Creek (which is known by all local gold panners and trout fishermen) The deck is perfect for morning coffee, outdoor dining and cocktails. While enjoying the view, check out the remarkable year-round wildlife that this 7 acre protected habitat maintains, including River Otters, Raccoons, Deer, Fox, Ducks, Red Tail Hawks, Great Blue Herons, Belted King Fishers, Hummingbirds, Rainbow Trout, Crawdads, Frogs, and Dragonflies. Continue to explore the grounds which include a creek side outdoor wine bar, rustic dining area and fireplace, great for winetasting and family barbeques. Cross the covered foot bridge to a grassy area, perfect for picnics and afternoon naps. The property also has several perfect creekside areas for anyone that loves to fall asleep in nature to the sound of flowing water. Two gazebos are on site, one accessible by a bridge, located on an island, the other is nestled in majestic trees, overlooking the view, both perfect for relaxing and taking it all in.

About Renee Boyatt

Moving from Miami, FL in 1999, we were looking for a place that was near the city, but secluded and away from it all. We really wanted to be close to the coast, but also close to the ski resorts. We love river rafting, camping, wine tasting and the great outdoors, and were blessed to find this unique, historic, hidden treasure, tucked away in our own private vacation retreat!

Renee Boyatt purchased this house in 1999

So charming

  • 4 of 5

We needed a place to host a rehearsal dinner. I saw the pictures of the beautiful grounds and thought it would be a great location for family to gather.

The house is a gem, old and full of character. Not a modern day convenience home, good old fashioned charm.

The owners were great and if we had any issues they were quick to respond.

Loved the four days we spent with family and friends.

Wasps in the house. Swamp cooler upstairs did not work and that was one area wasps coming in.

  • 3 of 5

Grounds are beautiful!! Downstairs beds comfortable. Antique decor in home fabulous. There stops the stars.

Upstairs game room had a swamp cooler, which did not work. It was not bearable to use game room until about 9:30 p.m. We had 2 people that needed to sleep up there in the room off of the game room. They could not go to bed til after 10:30 even with the window air that was in that bedroom. There were 3 areas where wasps could come in up there, and they did. Plenty of them. I contacted her about the stereo ( cd player) unit up in game room and the response I received was " it got disconnected". There was power, it was working, just not connected to the speakers. The heat and wasps made the game room barely usable. No screens, on windows or doors. There was no way to cool down the house with the nice breeze outside. Wine bar by river.....not cleaned, it was a mess. Grill........there was a smoker, no grill/bbq. No bbq tools to flip burgers even if there was one. All cooking had to be done inside, with only a window air unit in a bathroom by the kitchen. There is an air conditioner unit, but the controls were locked off. It would have been nice for them to set it, even at 82 degrees and then lock it up. The beautiful lights going over bridge (shown in pics), disconnected. Lights around railing by the river, disconnected. I was sent a text the night before we were coming up telling us her husband would be coming by a couple of times to water plants since it was so hot. That would be considered a care taker. And yes, we do know it was hot. Inside and out. We were only going to be there 4 nights. We live in Nor Cal, it is hot in the summer time, so it should be mentioned in description....during summer months husband will come and water. When I asked specifically when, I was told she couldn't tell me until she knew his work schedule. Yes, the hot water does smell like rotten eggs.

What saved our trip...US....being together one last family vacation. I flew my adult son in from Los Angeles, my adult nephews and my daughter with her fiance drove up for 2 nights.

Lots of character

  • 5 of 5

The house is great and feels quite unique, but it's the outside that steals the show. Tons of outdoor space and an amazing cooking area right next to the creek. There are a few oddities, such as the sleeping arrangements (most of the beds are in a single room), shower heads (with meager flow) and total lack of internet (no cell signal or wifi), but they don't take away from the great experience.

Beautiful setting

  • 3 of 5

We enjoyed our time at the property. You can tell it was once a beautiful setting, but we were there after a particularly hard winter and it did feel a bit run down and weathered outside. The interior while also older was okay but had a lot of "old" smells - the bedding in particular and the worst smell is the hot water. I was unable to shower the two nights we were there because of it. They tell you when you arrive the water has a 'high mineral content', which apparently means it smells like rotten eggs. We thought the best part was their darling outdoor cat!

Amazing home in an incredible setting

  • 5 of 5

Where to begin. This home is amazing and well cared for. The grounds are amazing. We walked everyday, even thought it was a rainy weekend. It was so relaxing and beautiful.

Renee was very responsive. She left us wonderful fresh muffins with welcome notes when we arrived. The home is well kept and very homey. Every detail is though of for your vacation/stay. The game room is so much fun with pool, board games, air hockey, darts, board games....there are also TV's and DVD's but we had not time for that.

We are definitely coming back. It will be amazing during the summer when the trees are filled in and we can enjoy the outside decks much more.

We did venture to town for only an hour for some supplies, checked out the wine bar briefly, picked up a growler at the brewery and then couldn't wait to get back as fast as possible.

This was a great find and we cannot wait to come back.

Renee is an amazing host. We loved her home.

Such a comfortable and charming "home away from home"! We booked this place for our family the weekend of our first daughter's wedding. It was minutes from the venue yet far enough out of town to feel remote and private. Our visit fell on the heels of historic January storms which caused severe erosion due to high creek waters so our access to the property was limited. However, the music of the creek running made up for it. In spite of the effects of the storm, the guys enjoyed the creekside fireplace the night before the wedding while the ladies sat by a roaring fire in the living room. The kitchen was well equipped for preparing a hearty breakfast on the wedding day. The beds were comfy and the house felt perfectly warm the entire time. Outside, the ponds and grounds were lovely even in the cold weather. The game room provided for the perfect after-party following the wedding reception...the newlyweds couldn't even resist! I would advise guests to bring their own bottled water and be prepared for the smell of well water for showers and dishwashing.

Renee was prompt to reply to all enquiries. Truly an excellent hostess (even though we never met in person). I expect we will book this property for future family events.
