We are a Eco friendly cottage/house located in the Southwest Desert in the Southeast corner of Cochise County, Arizona. A mile away from where thousands of Sandhill Cranes come to winter, at Whitewater Draw. Our cottage is straw bale construction with a open floor plan. Full kitchen, living, dining room and full bath with shower. Includes laundry access. Located on twenty one acres, room to roam. We have a pond among many trees. The pond was started by Native Americans years ago to dig for clay for their pottery. Once depleted it filled in with water, hence the pond. Many birds, ducks, a blue heron, turtles, fish and frogs call the pond their home. Plus we have a pair of Great horned owls that live in our desert oasis. The three words described by clients about our cottage is, it has character, rustic and remote, all with a smile.

When we booked it we weren’t really sure what we would find. It looked sweet and located between things we were interested in. The reality was everything we could have hoped for! The place itself was roomy and comfortable with finishes that totally fit the straw bale and adobe construction. Like we had gone back in time to old Arizona. Easy access to Cochise stronghold hiking, shopping and wandering in Bisbee and Douglas, and, around the corner from thousands of sand hill cranes at the Whitewater Draw preserve. Last, Peggy and Joe could not have been better hosts. We loved it!
Very nice people to host, very intelligent conversations. Very clean and orderly in the cottage. Respectful of the wildlife surrounding our home and the area. They love to hike, and shared a few hiking adventures with us, we felt very comfortable with our guest. It was a pleasure to have them here. I wouldn't hesitate to host Jay and Carol again.
Tranquil rural getaway
We (two couples) stayed in the beautiful Sandhill Crane Cottage during the Bisbee 1000 Stair Climb weekend. The cottage is a short (20-25 min) drive to Bisbee, and it proved to be a peaceful alternative to the busy town, making the post-race and pre-CafeRoka-dinner nap all the more indulgent. This weekend also happened to be during Sandhill Crane migration season, and we had the unexpected treat of seeing flocks of these amazing birds right around the corner at the Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area (5 stars on Tripadvisor!).
Peggy is a kind, interesting, and unobtrusive host, and the Cottage itself is truly beautiful and unique. Something about the thick straw-bale walls and the rustic interior makes you feel safe and cozy, while still being roomy, clean, and well appointed.
We loved our stay here, and hope to be able to stay again!
I enjoyed hosting Sherry and family during their stay at my cottage. Great conversation and lots of energy, made me smile. The cottage was almost cleaner when they departed, then when Sherry arrived, very impressed with their cleanliness. I would not hesitate to host Sherry and her family again, and hopefully we can sit down and have a longer conversation over a glass of wine or ice tea.
A great getaway!
A lovely, quiet casita! We enjoyed the quiet each morning watching the birds.
Hope to return again some day.
Joe and I enjoyed your company, and your respect for the surrounding area and its wildlife. And also your cleanliness. We commented to one another on our great conversations with you and hope to see you again. Safe trip home, and have a wonderful summer.
Eclectic, unique, serene, remote
We enjoyed our stay though we’re not birders!! Everything about the property is unique which is what we were looking for...Peggy is a gracious hostess and went out of her way to make sure we were comfortable from turning on the heat so we were toasty in the evenings to having coffee, half and half, muffins for our breakfast!! She readily shared the history of the adobe house which made the place even more interesting!! The night sky was especially mesmerizing as the stars, Milky Way, etc were brilliant against the black sky with no street lights or other house lights to dim their brilliance!! A wonderful experience!!
Quaint and homey guesthouse in a rural area
If you are looking for a serene and quiet getaway, this place at the end of a dirt road is for you! You will often see and hear wildlife and view abundant stars at night, and then wake up in the morning to twittering birds and streaming sunlight. The cottage was very clean, has artsy and rustic features, and is furnished with an eclectic combination of antiques and enough luxury items to make you feel comfortably pampered. The kitchen is fully furnished with everything you need to make your meals including a full sized stove and refrigerator. Joe and Peggy are gracious and friendly hosts. Their house is right next door and they treated us like family, readily answering all our questions and requests. The location seems remote except for the Whitewater Draw Wildlife Preserve which is a mile away, but actually it is central to great hikes at the Chiricahua National Monument, Cochise Stronghold and the canyon trails in Sierra Vista, as well as to fun historical tourism in nearby Bisbee and Tombstone. This winter we stayed several weeks in nice condos that seem unremarkable and sterile compared to the unique and memorable days spent at Sandhill Crane Cottage!
Large space full of interesting antiques and such
Comfortable and roomy with unusual touches all around like stained glass, old wooden doors, antique furniture, and beautiful tiles. A yard full of birds as well and a short drive to Whitewater Draw. A fun, relaxing place to stay.
Joe and I wouldn't hesitate having these two interesting people stay at our cottage again. Respectful of the surrounding area, wildlife and cottage. Great conversations, nice people.
