Built with accents from old-world European country houses, DerTannenhof Lodge boasts 2700sqft of living space set among mature Douglas firs amidst a back-drop of the Cascades. Located 17mi from Crystal Mountain ski resort and 10mi from the north Mt. Rainier National Park (Sunrise) entrance the area provides endless outdoor possibilities. The lodge sleeps 8 comfortably with a max of 10. The main floor has a kitchen with all amenities, eating area, dining and living room, a generous master with a log king + full bath, and another full bath for the common areas. The upper floor has a loft including a twin and pull-out and a TV/DVD, a 2nd BR with a log queen + twin, and 3rd BR with a full bed. Enjoy a fire in the vaulted great-room, kitchen or out on the knoll overlooking the river. The house has a spectacular deck with gas grill perfect for dining or relaxing, and of course the hot-tub is so nice after a day of play. There is a basketball half-court, and abundant fire wood. Elk (with fawns in spring) frequent the backyard regularly taking advantage of the grass.
My wife and our children (now 7, 9, 11 and 13) and I frequent this peaceful retreat. Our favorite activities include skiing, sledding (the forest service roads will allow for over 1/2 mi continuous sledding), hiking, hanging out in the hot tub, fires (...hot dogs/brats, smores, bread), fishing one of the many mountain lakes (rainbow trout) playing in side streams of the White River, and watching wildlife. And when raining there are puzzles, board games & cards, movies, and napping!
I live, work and play all in a pretty small radius. Taking off on my mountain bike from the house, climbing Chinook pass on my road bike, exploring the area via forest roads on my on/off road enduro motorcycle. And of course skiing Crystal Mountain is as good as it gets. I really enjoy sharing this property and hearing the adventures that people have.
Not many other homes in the area have a view of the mountains, a river front fire-ring (the pacifying noise of the river is amazing), with unique old-world European architectural accents and can accommodate 8-10 so comfortably. Some call it the 'ginger-bread house' because the snow can give it that appearance.
This is a very good place. We are very happy that chose this house.
Such a great place to spend a long weekend. Easy access to the mountain (Crystal) and the property itself is incredible!
The hot tub was in a prime location, and the owner was a pleasure to deal with!
I stayed 2 nights with my family and we had absolutely wonderful time during our stays there. The cabin was bigger than what we had expected and the area was nature friendly.
The owner was very friendly and gave me advises on where to hike (plus he fixed the jacuzzi for us so we were able to use it on our last day).
Overall we had wonderful time at the cabin and we might book it again!
We loved the house! It fit 3 small families quite comfortably. The kitchen was very well stocked and overall everything was clean and welcoming. Would definitely recommend. Hope to stay there again in the future. Thanks!
Overall, our stay was a positive one with beautiful views and an overall grandeur to the lodge. We had rented the lodge, (paying a higher rate due to it being a holiday weekend), for our outdoor wedding ceremony, (we stated this in our original application).
However, there were several things that we were dissatisfied/disappointed with:
Upon arrival, we found that the main double doors onto the deck were mark “unusable”. This made it incredibly difficult during our ceremony & reception, for our guests & for the general flow of activity.
We had planned on having CD’s playing during the reception (the provided list of amenities included a stereo, which, one would assume includes a workable CD player), but the downstairs stereo was unable to play any CD’s. We did find a DVD player upstairs that was usable, but very inconvenient for our purposes.
Our ceremony on Sunday, was to be held outside. There were a dozen or more people from, (we assumed), neighboring houses, consistently using the meadow area as a thoroughfare to the river. When we minimally blocked their path off (a branch laying across 2 clay flower pots, hardly a barricade), for privacy during our ceremony, we were threatened with police action and was forced to remove said (flimsy) barrier “or else”, which we reluctantly did. Thankfully, no one “crashed” our ceremony.
There was also a note stating that the hot tub had a leak and to maintain its water level. So, in order to use it, we were constantly adding water. This was inconvenient and posed a safety hazard due to the hose being across 1 of the only 2 doorways/pathways to the deck. Also, the noise from the outside faucet was so loud & disruptive inside the lodge, that use was curtailed because of it.
Minimal towels & washcloths were provided in 2 of the bathrooms. Access to additional towels (not specified for the hot tub) & washcloths would have been nice.
Overall, we had a positive experience because we would not allow these (avoidable) inconveniences to hamper our ceremony & reception. Our guests were very impressed, as were we, with the views & overall grandeur of the lodge. The kitchen was impressively stocked. The flatware & mugs were extraordinary as well as the quality of the hardware throughout. The décor was very homey & inviting. We would return to the lodge for an informal, non-holiday weekend getaway and would recommend the same to friends.
