About Eric

We (Meagan and Eric) are newlyweds with two kids, ages 4 and 12. We live in Portland and Bend (long story). Meagan is a Family Law Attorney and Eric is a Finance guy. Though our lives are very busy we are actively involved with our Hood River Cottage.

In addition to running 13.1s we ski, snowboard, Mtn. bike and sail so the Portland, Bend and Hood River triangle works for our busy lives.

Eric purchased this house in 2001

Why Eric chose Mount Hood

Growing up in California and attending College in San Diego, I have always been drawn to the California beach town lifestyle. Quite simply put, north of Santa Cruz, Hood River is perhaps the only true representation of that lifestyle. When you throw in Mt. Hood and the added year-round activities there was no other choice for location. I looked at properties for two years, with the thought of renovating and eventually (vacation) renting. When my Realtor saw the property, the views and its close proximity to downtown, she contacted me immediately and we made the first full offer, securing the property its first day of listing.

What makes this house unique

We believe that you will find our Cottage to be the perfect fit for your romantic get-away or small group of friends and/or family due to its proximity to Downtown (literally steps) and the laid-back, open layout of the house. Large slab granite counter-tops in the kitchen and bar. Flat-screen TV and Wi-Fi for the times you want to lounge around. Large hot-tub on one of the back decks for soothing relaxation after an active day. Oh, did I mention the beautiful Columbia River views?! Well, they're pretty awesome!

We do allow pets (dogs) with an additional nightly fee and deposit. I'm pretty technical with the description and would not call the property 'pet friendly' due to the limited outdoor space and bluff-side location (read steep). However the house is comfortable for pets (dogs) that are acclimated to hanging out around the house (please make sure to walk your dogs to allow for a potty break away from the property).

Very convenient to downtown

parking is a little tight here, but it is everywhere in hood river. The cottage was perfect for our stay. Beds are soft, kitchen well done, hot tub clean. We would stay here again.

Perfect Girls Week Retreat

  • 5 of 5

The Bluff Cottage was perfect for our girls get away. There were 3 of us and one car so this cozy place was "just right" as Goldilocks would say. It was a beautiful, quiet, peaceful and cozy place to return too in the evening where we sat in the spa (which by the way has a great view of the river), had wonderful meals, watched movies and slept in nice comphy beds. It was my first VROB, but one of my friends has used VROB several times and noted this to be the best equipt one yet that she has rented. We ate at least half of our meals there so it was really nice having an equipt kitchen. Where there little things we had to figure out or adjust to, yes but we were able to figure out or resolve everything to our needs (like putting a spare sheet in the window above the daybed to block the light from the street light outside from coming in through that window at night - worked like a champ) - if there was something we could not figure out we were confident we would be able to get a hold of the owners to resolve anything we could not. The cottage is PERFECTLY located - walking distance from downtown for eating and shopping - easy drives to awsome hiking and the beautiful surrounding area - great view of the river. We explored Portland, Mount Hood and the Columbia River from Portland to The Dalles for a week and feel like we barely scratched the surface. No shortage of great hikes and interesting things to do in this area - it was hard to choose what to do next. We also enjoyed a wonderful horsebackriding adventure with Margo from Double Mountain Ranch. Our favorite eatery was The Sixth Street Bistro & Loft. Rosauer's Supermarket took care of all of our cooking needs. We found so many helpful and friendly people on our trip it that it really stood out - we kept saying everyone is so nice in Oregon. With all of the good things about the Bluff Cottage, one of the best featchers is its Location Location Location. If I am ever back in this area and need a place to stay - this will be the place. I could never stay in a hotel in this area, knowing that the Bluff Cottage is available.

A cozy and comfortable cottage close to downtown.

  • 4 of 5

This was our second year staying at "The Cottage", and we'll be back again next year. The owners take very good care of their property, and are always available to answer any questions. Our only suggestion is that a shade be hung in the front bedroom to block out the light that shines in from the streetlight. And, the sink in the bathroom needs a drain stopper. Other than that...a great place to stay.

This was our first experience with VRBO and were extremel pleased.

The little house was nicely stocked and very comfortable. There could have been more space next to the bed by the window in the front bedroom, but the bed was comfortable and the linens very nice. Overall the visit was wonderful and we enjoyed our stay. Eric was great answering our question concerning the television and I truly appreciate that.

Great house, not very well stocked

  • 4 of 5

The house was amazing! super cute and fun. Sound system was great, hot tub was great, views were great. The only complaint I have is that the house is not very well stocked. Not a single decent knife in the kitchen, no bowls, no seran wrap or tinfoil, and only 5 coffee cups, not enough unless you want to wash your cup each use (especially if you're using mugs for soup). No sugar for coffee, no coffee grinder, really don't expect the kitchen to have anything and you should be fine. No soap or shampoo in the shower, not even basic hotel accommodations. In the age of airbnb and vrbo, I have grown used to basic toiletries and kitchen supplies, and this house did not deliver in that area. I think a little more attention to the details and I would definitely come back for another stay.

The beds were comfortable and the house was clean and quiet, we really did enjoy our stay.

A nice stay but a couple of issues.

  • 3 of 5

There were three adults staying in the house for a wedding. The cottage itself is lovely and certainly an easy walk to town. The beds were comfortable and it only took a minute to find a great pillow. The hot tub is delightful except is it disconcerting to find you are looking into the windows of a small house located on the next property. The home is currently deserted but does not fit my definition of privacy. The amount of chlorine in the tub at that time was overwhelming and enough to cut short any soaking due to runny eyes and irritated throat. The bed in the southwest bedroom fits the room to a tee which means there is no space for the person on the far side to access that side unless they crawl over their partner or smash in next to the wall. There is a street light which shines directly into that room through the windows over the bed which is slightly annoying but nothing a towel on the curtain rod can't fix. If there is more than one car at the site then parking will indeed be an issue.

Owner's Response: Hi Candi, We're happy that you found the Cottage lovely and the hot tub delightful, but I wanted to make sure and clarify a few points. The closest house is at least 50 feet away down the hillside, so I have to imagine that you are commenting on the less than frequently used tool shed of that property which sits at the back corner of the lot. The tool shed was built with windows and dormers but sits below the hot tub down the hill side, so you can see the roof (read dormers and windows in the eaves) slightly below you as the hot tub sits on a deck more than ten feet off the ground. As the cottage was built in the early nineteen hundreds the bedroom are not as large as rooms of today's homes. The being said the bedroom is nine feet wide which provides some room on both sides of the bed as well as about five feet of space between the foot of the bed and the closets. The current configuration of the room does place the bed only about a foot from the west wall to allow for more room at the rooms entry. We are sorry if you found the levels of Bromine in the hot tub to be excessive. We are constantly monitoring the hot tub and adjusting the chemical balances to try and find the perfect balance to insure our guests are as comfortable as possible and do regret if we were to exuberant with the utilization. Cheers, Meagan and Eric

Have to recommend 6th Street Bistro - Sit upstairs if not on a romantic getaway, (if you want romance sit downstairs), sit at the bar if Chris (owner) is working it and you're not with minors, otherwise upstairs no bar. Food is great and sourced locally and Chris is a blast.

Journey across the river via the Hood River toll-bridge and grab a pint and bite at Everybody's Brewing in White Salmon. Best beer in the area, though if you're planning on a few you may wish to hit one of the breweries downtown.
