Lovely small retirement house with veranda, private yard, upstairs porch. Two bedrooms each with bathroom. Eat-in kitchen with sunny sitting area. Dining room seats 6 comfortably. Living room with gas fireplace. Bright master bedroom suite has queen bed, bureau, closet and bathroom with tub/shower. The guest room has two twin beds, bureau, closet and bathroom with shower. Outdoor sitting porch overlooks the yard. Yard is private, tastefully landscaped with outdoor furniture and is accessible via iron gate and enticing walkway to/from street. Kitchen has gas range, frig, dishwasher, upstairs there is washer/dryer. The location in the heart of the historic district makes this house unique, along with the convenience to nearby shops and restaurants and historic sights. On street parking is available though one can do without a car, given the convenience of this location. Bicycling around this charming city is great fun. There are beaches within 20 minutes. Plantations, historic gardens and golf courses are less than an hour away.

My mother was from Charleston and owned this house for many years. She lived in Massachusetts but spent several months in Charleston each year. My sister and I own the house now. We have many cousins in the city and enjoy frequent visits.

Perfect Cottage Home

I just spent a month in this charming cottage and I have signed up for another month next year! I can't imagine a better place for an extended stay in this beautiful city. The secluded garden is spacious and could be the envy of neighbors with much larger homes and much, much smaller gardens. It has well-crafted antique furniture, heart pine floors, and the atmosphere of a well-loved home. It was clean, cozy and dry, even during the "500-year flood". I took my bicycle with me and spent many hours exploring the historic district on it. It was lovely! If you want granite counter tops and a place that is as generic as a hotel room, this will not be for you. However, if you want to experience Charleston as a "month-long native", then this cottage is perfect!!!

Our winter home away from home

My wife and I divide our time between our lovely lake home in Michigan and this urban oasis South of Broad in Charleston. We are accustomed to living in a historic house and understand some of the challenges of owning and maintaining a building of this age. The owners are very responsive to requests for maintenance and for pest control. This property has several unique features, one of which is amazing quiet and privacy in a downtown neighborhood. There are no shared walls with nearby houses to transmit sound and the windows do not face those of the neighbors. We love to entertain and have seated as many as ten people at the long dining table and prepared many memorable meals in this kitchen. The building is a converted cookhouse dependency and you can still see the old hearth in the floor. An addition to the original building provides room for a large bedroom upstairs and a kitchen and a beautiful breakfast area downstairs. The breakfast room has glass on three sides with lovely views of the live oaks and private garden. A bathroom was added at one time to the guest bedroom which is small but at least one of our many guests said he was glad to have a shower with hand rails. It’s more like staying at your grandmother’s house than Embassy Suites and the rate is very reasonable given the excellent location. We’ve rented this home in the heart of Charleston’s mansion district each winter for six years now and have already signed our lease for January-March of 2016.

So disappointed

This cottage was filthy and full of very old, dirty debris, old air conditioner unit in Master bedroom closet. Outside porch had years of old rusted beach chairs piled up. Upstairs porch had nasty mildewed carpet. Second bath was tiny tiny and we replaced the filthy toilet seat with a new one. My sister and I spent four hours cleaning the kitchen of rat droppings in drawers and crud on outside of everything. We had the carpets professionally cleaned. I actually took pictures of all of it. The sad thing is that the location is perfect if they would clean this place out and clean it up. This state is not the fault of the woman who cleans, but of the owners. The owners had spent two weeks on the cottage just before we arrived.

Owner's Response: WHile we owners believe this review is overstated and doesn't take into account the relatively low price at which we rent the house given its ideal location, you will have to judge for yourself. We have loved using this cozy and charming house for over 50 years. While not as fresh and modern as some might like it is a peaceful and restful, and in our estimation perfectly clean and comfortable, oasis in the very heart of historic Charleston. The house was not for these renters but we are confident you will enjoy it. In the near term we do expect to invest in significant renovations, but an increase in our rental prices are likely to follow.

There is Charleston, Historic Charleston, and then there is South of Broad Charleston...... sometimes referred to in reverent tones as "Hallowed Ground"....... Welcome to this delightful home in a unique, one-of-a-kind location.

If you have not visited Charleston this a great place to begin. If you have experienced the Holy City you will appreciate the proximity of this home to the many must-see museums, cultural events, plays, landmarks, historic homes, shopping, restaurants, etc.

Or, simply relax and enjoy this charming and inviting home situated in its quiet, secluded, garden setting among the beautiful trees.

Some specifics:

-The description, details, and pictures provided in the VRBO listing are accurate and fairly represent the property. The owner is gracious and responsive.... a real gentleman.

-We found the home's floor plan was excellent for our needs, and the hardwood floors were wonderful. The appliances and equipment were in good working order. The HVAC (heating and cooling systems) were new, and we used them both during the month of November. The kitchen was adequately equipped allowing us to prepare our annual Thanksgiving "feast" with all the trimmings. The two bedrooms were roomy with very comfortable beds, and the two bathrooms were sufficient.

-The garden/yard was landscaped and surrounded by a beautiful old-brick wall which provided excellent privacy and a sense of intimacy while in the heart of the City. A grill was available allowing us to cook and enjoy cozy meals under the stars.

Charleston is and has been our favorite home away from home. Now we have discovered a new treasure.... this exceptional property. Can't wait to return.

Home from Home in Charleston, SC

My husband and I have just returned from a 3 month sabbatical in Charleston, SC. We found this house on VRBO and set off on our adventure. The location is just perfect, on a one-way, quiet street with mainly horse drawn, tourist carriages or walkers looking into the beautiful gardens. The short walkway to the house from the street means that the garden and house are quiet and peaceful. The garden and surrounding gardens are so pretty, with lots of big old trees and plants. The house itself is warm and welcoming. We loved the bright sitting area in the kitchen and the beautiful wooden floors and stairs. The master bedroom is so peaceful, yet bright and with the fully grown trees outside the windows, it felt like our very own tree-house. All restaurants and shops are within walking distance. Also the fabulous water-front and harbor are also a short distance away. We had a car, but while in town, we used our bikes to go everywhere. I highly recommend this wonderful house and I hope that we will be back there soon.
