|Minimum Stay||90 nights|
Some time in the late twenties, early thirties a sea captain built a one-room beach house two and a half blocks from the ocean. It resembled the inside of a ship’s cabin with a pull down bed, built-in shelves and cabinets to maximize space. The exterior structure still stands and is the main living space of this original Florida beach cottage, now expanded to include a kitchen and dining room and large master bedroom with spacious bath. 900 square feet in all and creatively renovated, The Beach House as we call it, lies only two and a half blocks from the beach but sports a comfortable back patio, brick wood grill and portable gas grill, hammock, garden shed and bike shed. The impression is one of ease and efficiency. Everything has its place and there is a place for everything.
The original interior walls are plank boards painted white and in the bedroom, the boards run up the wall and along the ceiling, accentuating the cottage feel. Exterior hardy board give the cottage an old-world feel, especially with the white-railed porch in front. Tastefully decorated and landscaped, this house calls to your simpler nature when you might shower outside after the beach and dry in the hammock or lawn chair. In the mornings when the day is still cool and the birds are singing, I sit in the Adirondack chair on the front porch and work on my laptop. Life is too good.
Fully up to date with modern necessities like WiFi, cable TV/DVD, brand new dishwasher, dual fuel range and refrigerator, front loading washer/dryer, microwave and even a Champion Juicer for the health conscious if you request, it has all that you need to feel comfortable with none of the stresses of busy streets and noisy neighbors. Take a bike ride to Jax Beach Pier, walk into the Beaches Town Center (only seven blocks away) for dinner or frozen yogurt, or buzz over the Intercoastal Waterway and pick up a gourmet dinner from Fresh Market. Walk to the beach, have wine in the back yard, grill out burgers and roast vegetables, all this and more and yet life stays simple. We hope you will enjoy the Salt Life as much as we do.
Atlantic beach ordinance requires a THREE MONTH MINIMUM RENTAL and have personally contacted me about this. Also, it is important to know that PETS ARE NOT ALLOWED and this is non-negotiable. My family vacations in this house during the winter months and we have extreme allergies. I am thrilled to share my home during the spring, summer and fall, however, and invite you to consider it your own, treating as such.
I grew up in Jacksonville and moved away after college. After raising a family of four boys and a husband, I bought a house close to home but miles away. I wanted to be near my parents but immerse myself in the beach life. Atlantic Beach could be anywhere on the east coast, but it happens to be only 30 minutes from downtown Jacksonville, where you can go to enjoy opera, the symphony, road shows from New York and everything a big city has to offer.
Dorothy Palmer purchased this cottage in 2006
Having grown up in Jacksonville, I remember the beaches when they were more remote, quaint and simple. I liked this house because it reminded me of the clapboard beach cottages of old, with porches, wood floors and simple white trim work.
Atlantic Beach is mostly residential so it is quiet with good neighbors. But mostly because you can walk to the beach without needing a stoplight. Pedestrian traffic rules in Atlantic Beach, with bikes coming in second.
This sweet little cottage is well maintained and loved. Cozy bedroom, great bathroom and storage, wonderful kitchen space. The yard is lush and relaxing. Nestled in the heart of charming Old Atlantic Beach, the area is peaceful and relaxing. But also close enough to bike to restaurants, grocery store, boutiques, and more. Wonderful neighborhood to walk/run/bike around. In walking distance to a quiet part of the beach. This place is heavenly! We stayed here for 9 months and were so sad to leave! We miss it very often and have so many fond memories. Dorothy is such a gem of a lady. She was always very kind, accommodating, and quick to help. This cottage is truely the best of all worlds.
I stayed in this lovely little cottage for three months this spring. What a DELIGHT! Convenient, quiet, friendly surroundings; it felt like home with none of the work, just relaxation and peace of mind. I will definitely be returning again and again. Dorothy, the owner, is very helpful and accommodating in every way if needed to make one's stay the BEST!
I stayed in the cottage from April to the end of June as I was looking for a permanent place to live in the area. The location is fantastic. It is on a quiet street, but is super close to the beach (2 1/2 blocks), two parks, and downtown Atlantic/Neptune Beach. Dorothy, the owner, is very cool and she was helpful and prompt to respond to any issues that arose during my months in the house. She also gave me some top notch recommendations for food and shopping. The front porch is amazing, I really enjoyed lounging out there and reading or just listening to the crickets. And the back yard is lovely. There is a gas stove in the kitchen, which I appreciated, and the air conditioner is top notch. (Important in Florida!) The house is older, so I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who has sensitivities to dust, but it was a perfect home for me as I explored the Atlantic Beach area. I had a wonderful stay and missed the cottage after I left. Thank you Dorothy for sharing your home!
Tucked down one of Atlantic Beaches tiny grid of streets, the Beach House is two minutes walk to the beach at a beach access. In the summer months there is a life guard on duty. It's only seven pleasant walking blocks to the Beaches Town Center where you can eat, drink and be merry!
