This cute Cottage is the former carriage house for the adjacent 1876 Captain Bell House Bed and Breakfast . Completely renovated in July 2012 with all new: kitchenette (sink, microwave, refrigerator, coffee maker); private full bath with walk in shower; wall to wall carpet; queen size bed; central AC and gas heat; full size sofa; 52' HD TV with 100+ channels. Laundry facilities available.
I bought the 1876 Captain Bell House in September 2011 to restore it to its full charm as a Bed and Breakfast Inn. Restoration of the old house was completed May 2013 and open for guests. The cottage renovations were done to high standards so this is the best lodging in town. My background includes city management and planning, real estate and residential construction. This is my second historic restoration, having won a Downtown Delaware OH Historic Award for my first.
Philip Laurien purchased this cottage in 2011
I was looking for a historic property with character that needed to be saved. The Captain Bell House is still quite original, albeit without it's former front porch. Inside it still has its original 18, floor to ceiling windows with wavy float glass, some original board floors, a curving front stair with walnut railing and newel post. It had been long neglected but still was structurally sound, and its in-town location was superb.
Every system and every surface of the main old house and the cottage were restored or renovated.
At the Captain Bell house and cottage you can walk out your door, take ten steps and see Lake Erie. The fantastic Ritter library with its computers and tremendous print resources is next door. Coffee shops and restaurants (11 of them) are with 3 blocks. Vermilion's dozen downtown festivals literally take place at your front door. Set up your lawn chair and enjoy! Walk everywhere, and bring your well behaved pet.
My favorite place ever !!! Very clean and so comfortable . Phil is the best innkeeper and this is the second year I stayed for more than 10 days, wish I could live here forever. Walking distance to downtown Vermilion and all the restaurants, shops and bars. Can't wait for next year.
We stayed one night and enjoyed ourselves! Cottage is great--updated, clean and comfortable. Phil was the perfect host and gave us tips on the local restaurants, bars and bakery. Highly recommend.
Originally being from the Cleveland area, I was missing the lake. I chose this property based on its reviews, photos and location. My husband and I stayed two nights and were not disappointed!!
Phillip was a wonderful host, greeting us upon arrival, sharing his knowledge of the area, and just making nice conversation.
As far as the cottage, it was beautiful and absolutely spotless ~ Guests are provided with a good deal of amenities, including a Keurig coffeemaker with an infinite choice of coffees, a stocked studio kitchenette, a large flat screen TV, a comfortable couch, and a cozy bed.
Guests are provided with a breakfast voucher for a quaint restaurant about a block away - - go on your own schedule. The restaurant is set in a Victorian house that serves homemade breakfast, lunch and dinner, along with Toft's ice cream. Also offered are some great ethnic dishes. There is a nice upscale restaurant nearby, The Vine Vault, and Brummer's, making great chocolates since 1904.
Two cruiser bicycles are offered to guests for exploring the area. A wonderful relaxing time - we would both like to return!
My husband and I stayed here Friday night to celebrate my birthday. I've been wanting to go to Chez Francois for awhile so we made reservations and I started looking for a place to stay. I stumbled upon the Cozy Cottage and decided to give it a try because of all the great reviews. We've never stayed in a cottage or bed and breakfast before so I was a little nervous about it. When we checked in, Philip brought us to the cottage and when we walked in, we were both very surprised. It was a lot nicer than the pictures on the website. The Cottage had everything we needed. We loved the town and the fact we could walk to dinner and breakfast. Philip was very helpful and takes prides in what he does and it shows. We've been telling everyone about it over the week and we'll definitely be back to stay here!
The setting of the Captain Bell House and Cozy Cottage is in a charming historic Vermilion neighborhood two blocks from the lake. Our Host greeted us as if we were very special friends. He provided us with the history of the 140 year old beautiful main house and shared the remodeling and updating which he did himself. Wonderful Cozy Cottage was our choice. The Cottage was just right for us: very clean, comfortable, very modern and with great amenities. The bed was comfortable, and we loved the large TV. Enjoyed the popular coffee maker with choices of coffees and teas. Breakfast was provided in a cafe' with in "walking distance." (Breakfast was very good.) Chez Francios is also within short walking distance and their Easter Dinner was the reason we traveled to Vermilion. We decided that an over night would be a treat. We found the Captain Bell House on line. The properties were lovely and in walking distance to the "downtown" area. We have shared our experience at the Cozy Cottage with friends and they all expressed an interest, so close to home (45 minute drive.) The "Captain Bell House" was easy to find and the setting beautiful! We will return.
The B&B is in two different buildings. The main building is a traditional very large two story lake house. All remodeled and updated. The house likely is near 100 years of age... quite pleasant. We like reserving the seperate stand alone unit that is beside the main house and its multiple guest rooms. The stand alone is one large room with kitchenette-wet bar and full bath. Breakfast is at a local restaurant an easy (about 3 minute) walk or if weather is bad parking is easy at both B&B and Restaurant. THis is centrally located so a walk to great dining is easy short and the town is pleasant. The lake is near enough, maybe 3 minute walk, maybe about 5 minutes, and the bay is right there too. Enjoy. We have now on three different weekends.
Located in the lovely Harbourtown Historic district, just two blocks from Lake Erie and 3 blocks from Chez Francois restaurant and quaint main street shops. 4 blocks to the beach, so you can walk everywhere.
