Overview

About the property

Romantic 2 bedroom cottage above Frigiliana, splendid sea & mountain views

This charming country cottage in the Axarquia is perched on a hill of olive trees overlooking the white Moorish village of Frigiliana and the Mediterranean Sea, and backed by the Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Sierras. It is conveniently located 5 minutes by car (a pleasant 20 minute walk) outside Frigiliana, right off the road to Torrox, and is only a 10 to 15 minute drive to Nerja and the beaches of the Costa del Sol. A large municipal pool is available in the village. Málaga is less than an hour's drive away, and Granada only 90 minutes. The beautiful and historical cities of Cordoba, Seville and Ronda are easily reachable.

The cottage is set in a garden of fruit trees and flowers amidst the olive grove. The terrace faces east-southeast down the valley to the sea--a beautiful place to sit and watch the moon (or sun!) rise. The fully equipped kitchen and bathroom are tiled with hand-made tiles, and a large wood-burning stove in the salon is perfect for chilly winter days and nights.

The Cortijo Laurel combines a peaceful and romantic ambiance with easy access to wonderful walks in the sierras backing the property and the village of Frigiliana, as well as to the river Higuerón, the coast, Nerja, Almuñecar and other white villages in the Axarquia. The views of the sea, the mountains, the terraced fields of olives and avocados that fall towards the coast, and the clouds over Africa are breathtaking. Birds are abundant throughout the year, and wild mountain goats can sometimes be seen on the slopes above. Also, perched on the mountainside as it is, the starry night skies are a wonder to behold.

Hot water is provided by solar panels--there are so many sunny days! There is an electric backup. A large public swimming pool is available in the village of Frigiliana, and there are many good restaurants and bars. Horse-back riding is also available.

The high-speed train, AVE, runs between Málaga, Córdoba and Madrid. One can take lovely backroads from Frigiliana to Granada, or the autovia motorway, which shortens the time to less than 90 minutes. The autovia from Málaga (or Frigiliana-Nerja) to Barcelona is complete.

Why Sharon Wevill chose Axarquia (Costa del Sol)

I bought the land in 1989 and built the cottage 12 years later. It had been my dream to have a cottage in the hills outside the village of Frigiliana, where I could have a garden and fruit trees and enjoy the lovely natural setting.

What makes this cottage unique

The magnificent views of the Mediterranean and of the sierras behind the village of Frigiliana, which is only a short walk or ride away. The birdlife and clean air. The peace.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a wonderful time in your lovely house! The terrace is so beautiful, the light under the vine is splendid, the jasmine in the garden smells good and the sound of the (wind chimes) lets us dream of paradise. . . . we are sure that this won't be our last visit.

Home from home

This is my third stay in Sharon's gorgeous cortijo and each time I arrive, it feels like coming home. The cottage is very well equipped for summer or winter (I've stayed in August and December). This time we didn't have a car, so planned our trips - walking down into Frigiliana takes about 20 minutes; walking back up takes twice as long so we simply budgeted for taxis for that! During the festival the taxi fare almost doubles to 15 euros, but drops again to 8 the following day. One evening our taxi was so well air-conditioned that we welcomed the blast of heat when we opened the car door on arrival.

Ants and mosquitoes were both more evident this summer than previously, and after my initial fascination with the different kinds of ants (the big ones come out at night...), I soon got tired of them, especially after finding them in my bread - it pays to keep all food in the fridge. The provision of anti-mosquito night wall plugs was a welcome find, as was the ant killer under the sink.

But not even the bugs could dent my delight with the place. The terrace is perfect for private sunbathing, or watching the fireworks on the final night of the festival, and the little gazebo at the bottom of the steps is a rewarding spot for reflection and writing.

I love this place, and warmly recommend it. It's comfortable, quirky and has everything you need. Just bring a sense of adventure (for dealing with the bugs).

Owner's Response: Yes, the ants and mosquitos do come in summer, but those plug-in anti-mosquito things do seem to work, and there are anti-ant pellets I try to provide as well. Thanks, Michelle!

Beautiful cottage situated in the Frigliana hills.

  • 5 of 5

What a treat! A peaceful retreat with a tremendous view of Frigliana and beyond.

The property was clean and well equipped for a self catering stay.

Communications with Sharon were excellent and we were pleasantly greeted with beer and wine.

It really is a little piece of paradise.

Summer holiday 2017

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for somewhere where we could totally relax and unwind. The cottage was ideal for that, it was private, quiet and with magnificent views over the town and the sea beyond. The weather was very warm so we didn't want to do too much and the cottage was perfect for us. It was well equipped, we had all we needed.

Balcon de Frigiliana

  • 5 of 5

A lovely cosy cottage beautifully nestled in the olive groves and only a short drive from the centre of the village. The spacious balcony provides amazing views of Frigiliana and the surrounding valley to the sea. A beautiful and peaceful location. Sharon is a thoughtful, reliable and relaxed host . I found organising my trip easy. The cottage had everything we needed. The wifi connection was very good (a must for me). The old village of Frigiliana is certainly a pretty town, but its setting on the edge of the mountains makes it the most incredible place. In such a popular destination I felt lucky to have found this wonderful hideaway. Thanks Sharon, my daughter adored her time here.

Idyllic cottage in a wonderful location

  • 5 of 5

On our arrival Sharon was welcoming, helpful and charming. The cottage was delightful with amazing hilltop views of Frigiliana below and the sea beyond.

The cottage was clean and very well equipped ,remaining refreshingly cool .It is very tastefully designed, surrounded by lush planting of olive and avocado trees.

A car is essential to get about and enjoy the surrounding areas. The village of Frigiliana is beautiful with lots of very good restaurants and quaint houses.

We hope to stay again and would highly recommend Sharon's beautiful home.

Una semana muy agradable en el campo!

  • 5 of 5

A lovely house, 5 minutes drive from Frigiliana, 15 to the coast. Clean and well equipped.

Very rustic with many nice touches. The views from the terrace over the hills to the sea are spectacular. Sharon was very friendly and helpful.

We had a very enjoyable week. I would definitely recommend it!

Frigiliana is set on a mountainside 6 kilometers from Nerja's beaches on the Costa del Sol. Nerja has many shops, bars and restaurants, and just on the outskirts are some famous prehistoric caves. In Frigiliana one can visit an interesting archeological museum that houses pieces from the Phoenician era found in caves and burial mounds around the village and along the Higuerón River. There are shops selling locally grown fruits and vegetables, an olive mill where one can buy oil pressed from local olives, as well as ceramics and souvenir shops and several bars and restaurants. The village has botanical gardens, children's playgrounds and a modern gymnasium and pool. Hikers can enjoy many stunning walks into the sierras and up the river, including one long hike up to the Pass of the Ravens, which overlooks the great vega south of Granada.
