|Minimum Stay||5 nights|
This charming country cottage in the Axarquia is perched on a hill of olive trees overlooking the white Moorish village of Frigiliana and the Mediterranean Sea, and backed by the Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Sierras. It is conveniently located 5 minutes by car (a pleasant 20 minute walk) outside Frigiliana, right off the road to Torrox, and is only a 10 to 15 minute drive to Nerja and the beaches of the Costa del Sol. A large municipal pool is available in the village. Málaga is less than an hour's drive away, and Granada only 90 minutes. The beautiful and historical cities of Cordoba, Seville and Ronda are easily reachable.
The cottage is set in a garden of fruit trees and flowers amidst the olive grove. The terrace faces east-southeast down the valley to the sea--a beautiful place to sit and watch the moon (or sun!) rise. The fully equipped kitchen and bathroom are tiled with hand-made tiles, and a large wood-burning stove in the salon is perfect for chilly winter days and nights.
The Cortijo Laurel combines a peaceful and romantic ambiance with easy access to wonderful walks in the sierras backing the property and the village of Frigiliana, as well as to the river Higuerón, the coast, Nerja, Almuñecar and other white villages in the Axarquia. The views of the sea, the mountains, the terraced fields of olives and avocados that fall towards the coast, and the clouds over Africa are breathtaking. Birds are abundant throughout the year, and wild mountain goats can sometimes be seen on the slopes above. Also, perched on the mountainside as it is, the starry night skies are a wonder to behold.
Hot water is provided by solar panels--there are so many sunny days! There is an electric backup. A large public swimming pool is available in the village of Frigiliana, and there are many good restaurants and bars. Horse-back riding is also available.
The high-speed train, AVE, runs between Málaga, Córdoba and Madrid. One can take lovely backroads from Frigiliana to Granada, or the autovia motorway, which shortens the time to less than 90 minutes. The autovia from Málaga (or Frigiliana-Nerja) to Barcelona is complete.
I bought the land in 1989 and built the cottage 12 years later. It had been my dream to have a cottage in the hills outside the village of Frigiliana, where I could have a garden and fruit trees and enjoy the lovely natural setting.
The magnificent views of the Mediterranean and of the sierras behind the village of Frigiliana, which is only a short walk or ride away. The birdlife and clean air. The peace.
We had a wonderful time in your lovely house! The terrace is so beautiful, the light under the vine is splendid, the jasmine in the garden smells good and the sound of the (wind chimes) lets us dream of paradise. . . . we are sure that this won't be our last visit.
We stayed 15 days in Sharons beautiful cottage just outside of Frigiliana. Everything was as described on the website about the house. Kitchen (well-equipped) and living/dining room in the upper level, which has access to an amazing terrace facing south towards Frigiliana and the Mediterranean. Downstairs the bedroms and bathroom are; as well as access to the garden. The house was rustic and charming, exactly what houses should look like in Andalucia. It was easily heated in the chilly evenings; has a very effective wood burning stove as well as several electric heaters. It was very private and a very quiet area, although it was only 1400 m to the entrance of Frigiliana; it took us 15-20 minutes to walk there (to Frigiliana it is downhill, and back home is uphill). We were bringing our 2 dogs and they immediately felt at home; the only thing we would have loved, was if the property (or part of it) was fenced, so the dogs could run out by themselves. Frigiliana is a beautiful village! We were cycling many hours every day, and the roads are generally in very good condition, except 8 km between the house and Torrox. It is very hilly terrain, the only flat is along the coastline to the west of Nerja. There are an abundance of spectacular MTB routes in the area. The access to the house is easy, the entrance is just few metres off the road. Sharon was very kind and welcoming and we couldn't have had a better stay! We really look forward to come back in June/July, to spend the summer holidays in this wonderful house; and enjoy long warm summer evenings sitting on the terrace resting after a hard day of training in the muntains. We highly recommend the house and Sharon, you won't be disappointed.
This is the second time I have stayed in Sharon's cottage and, as before, everything was perfect. I had the first and final nights to myself this time, and was very pleased to share the secret with my (grown-up) kids when they arrived later. We hired a car, which made forays to Nerja and Competa etc very easy (although the mountain roads are challenging when you are used to driving on the other side!)
I love the fact that Sharon's guests are like extended family, and that we each leave something for the next folks coming in. So, thank you for the beers and the apples; I left loo rolls, pasta and pears!!
As it does get cold in the winter evenings, I was very grateful for the supply of logs which Sharon left, and we became very proficient at keeping the fire in overnight with only one log! And once we had found the duvets (and the heaters, which we rarely needed), we were all toasty and very contented. We had a fantastic time - the boys loved being able to scramble down the mountain side into Frigiliana, or just to sit in the gazebo with the bees buzzing around us from the hives a little way off. At this time of year a lot of businesses / restaurants / shops are closed, and some places were being renovated, which was an interesting contrast to the hiving activity of the summer.
In all, Sharon's cottage is a charming home from home, with everything you might need, especially the basics like condiments and coffee bags; and after some other places I've stayed, I was pleasantly surprised at how well-equipped the cottage is. My favourite thing in the whole house though, is the bookcase! Given that Sharon is a writer herself, the books are eclectic and interesting - I have discovered several new writers here. Sitting out on the terrace under a million stars with a good book and a view over Frigiliana is my idea of Heaven on Earth. I hope you enjoy your stay as much.
My friend and I stayed in Cortijo Laurel over the Three Cultures Festival as previous places I'd stayed weren't available - and what a find! Sharon met us at a pre-arranged spot to lead us up the road to the cortijo and showed us where everything was. She's a delightful host and readily available for any questions if necessary. The house is gorgeous, very well equipped with everything you might need (although do remember to take European adapters). There is one room as you come in, which leads onto the terrace and the two bedrooms and a bathroom downstairs.
I was particularly impressed with the kitchen area - oil, garlic, tea, coffee, sugar, condiments and herbs etc all there - little details that make all the difference when you don't have to buy them! In other places I've stayed, despite having follow-on guests, the owners have cleared out everything bar salt and pepper. I'd brought coffee with me and left it as we'd used what was there. The previous guests had left some eggs, so we paid it forward in kind. In addition, the bathroom was similarly well-stocked although of course we had brought stuff with us. It was a nice touch though.
We spent our days (supposedly writing) on the terrace, enjoying the cooling breezes off the mountain that filtered through the open doors and windows, sheltered from the midday sun by the lush Virginia Creeper. In the evenings, depending on the light, we made our way down either along the road or through olives groves and along an overgrown gully, past a goat farm into the village for the festivities. A couple of times we walked back up again (along the road) until we discovered that it was ~8 euros for a taxi ('arriba, subir, a unos dos kilómetros'...'Esa casa hay' (I'm not known for my fluency in Spanish, sadly)).
There are two well-stocked bookcases (deep joy), music, TV and satellite (we didn't avail of these). Aside from a cacophony of dogs in the valley, our music was provided by a beautiful wind-chime in the avocado tree outside my bedroom. The beds are comfortable and my room opened out to the garden, protected by the usual grille doors, and I enjoyed the night air as I slept until I realized I was providing the mozzies with a midnight feast....
We enjoyed our stay in Cortijo Laurel so much that I have booked it again for another two occasions. Highly recommended (now that my slots are confirmed!) - you will not be disappointed!
Perfect location between the mountains and the sea, lovely places to visit and eat within walking distance and also close to beach and main towns. The property was clean and well maintained, very quiet and peaceful.
We booked for a month and could easily have stayed longer, the property is perfectly positioned and very well laid out. As it is built into the slope both upstairs and downstairs have ground level access. The living room/ kitchen and balcony are upstairs to benefit from the views, the sunshine and the fresh air. The bedrooms and bathroom are downstairs to benefit from the shade and the peace. The house is well equipped and we found everything we needed, it was perfect for a couple for a month of winter sunshine (yes it did rain occasionally).
The only negative was the drive, for our car it was impossible. We were driving a convertible with sports suspension and low profile tyres, after grounding out we realised that the drive was never going to work for us. In a car with 'normal' suspension the only issue would have been the steep slope, but that is not unusual and we saw very many worse examples.
Sharon met us in Frigiliana and led us out to the house, it would have been tricky to find without the guidance. In my view it is not within walking distance of the town, it might be 30 minutes down, but the return would need a taxi! it is very steep, unless you are super fit.
In the cold evenings we were kept warm by the huge log burner in the sitting room and despite the weather we were never cold, Sharon can provide logs. For those who need wifi the bandwidth is very good, by rural standards and we had no issues with connectivity.
All in all we had a great holiday and would like to stay here again if we revisit the area.
There are a great many places to visit within an hours drive and we were able to see snow on the mountains, whilst lying on the beach. Eating out can be inexpensive if you join the Spanish and eat the 'meal of the day' at the restaurants, our cheapest was 15euro for two meals of 3 courses, including drinks and bread... and the food was excellent.
we had a wonderful stay, the house was delightful and the location superb. sharon was extremely helpful and welcoming.
We enjoyed evenings on the terrace with the fabulous views and wonderful night skies full of stars.
the house is well equipped and cared for. Frigilliana is a very beautiful and lively village and the drive to the beach is easy. many beaches to chose from but our favourite was Maro to the east of Nerja.
All in all a fanatsic stay and we would love to return, and highly reccomend it.
Frigiliana is set on a mountainside 6 kilometers from Nerja's beaches on the Costa del Sol. Nerja has many shops, bars and restaurants, and just on the outskirts are some famous prehistoric caves. In Frigiliana one can visit an interesting archeological museum that houses pieces from the Phoenician era found in caves and burial mounds around the village and along the Higuerón River. There are shops selling locally grown fruits and vegetables, an olive mill where one can buy oil pressed from local olives, as well as ceramics and souvenir shops and several bars and restaurants. The village has botanical gardens, children's playgrounds and a modern gymnasium and pool. Hikers can enjoy many stunning walks into the sierras and up the river, including one long hike up to the Pass of the Ravens, which overlooks the great vega south of Granada.
