Guestbook comments from the manager

The apartment is in an ideal location to explore and saviour the delights of staying in the of city of Cadiz but with the added benefit of a superb outdoor living space that allows you to relax enjoy the sun and to be away from the excitement of the city. We thoroughly enjoyed the combination and would highly recommend the apartment for anyone visiting Cadiz with the owners being very accommodating, helpful and informative. We will certainly book again on our next visit.

I had only visited Cadiz once when on a cruise. When I saw this charming apartment for rental I decided to book for a week. The booking process was highly efficient and friendly. All my emails were replied to promptly and courteously. I wanted to do a few day trips to Jerez and Seville and the owners were very helpful with translation for the train schedules etc. I was met by the owners at the apartment and they gave me directions to the nearest shops, recommended bars and restaurants etc. There was a good selection of tourist leaflets in the flat and an excellent library of books and DVD´s. The apartment was very well furnished and clean. It had a well equipped kitchen although I ate out so did not use this facility much. The terrace was exceptional. It had all day sun and I really enjoyed a quiet drink in the evening just watching the sun go down on the Cathedral bell tower. The flowers were stunning and I know the owners put in a lot of time keeping the terrace looking nice. I found Cadiz to be a very friendly City with few tourists. The sites were easily accessible and those that did charge entry were very cheap. The streets were safe and I did a lot of walking around the City. I would say that some grasp of Spanish would be a benefit or at least a pocket dictionary to help you through the varied menus. If you are a tea jenny then take a supply of tea bags as I did not find any that resembled the UK brands. I would certainly visit Cadiz again and would definitely stay at this property.

Owner's Response: Thank you Maggie for this kind review. We are very pleased that you liked Cadiz and enjoyed staying in the Penthouse. I hope you will come to Cadiz again and you will always be welcome to stay with us. If you remind me in advance I will put some teabags in the flat for you. We buy them at the British supermarket in Chiclana.

Fantastic Penthouse apartment

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic week in Cadiz, Derek the owner was very friendly and helpful, and explained everything about the apartment. The apartment was beautiful, clean and just as described in the listing.

Getting there: We arrived by train after a week in Fuengirola, via one night stop in Seville. We organised the train tickets in the UK which was very easy to do however we nearly missed our connecting trains on the way home due to the late train from Cadiz to Seville (Dos Hermanos) so I would give myself more than 20 minutes in future. However apart from that it was very easy to get around on the trains and we would definitely go back to Cadiz.

The people were very friendly, the tapas bars and restaurants were amazing and there was usually some form of busking outside the cathedral every night. We loved the little narrow streets to walk around, the markets all the little squares and the beaches!

We will definitely come back because we didn't have enough time to do everything we wanted to do and we would recommend this property to people as long as you can manage stairs to the top of the Penthouse, it was worth it every day! Sue & John

Owner's Response: We are delighted to read that you enjoyed your visit to the Penthouse and many thanks for your kind comments about Derek. It made his day to know that the service he offers is appreciated by our clients. It is fair to say that he is something of an expert on Cadiz so he can answer almost any questions a guest may have. Many thanks also for your helpful comments about the train service. It is one of the best in the world and prices are still very low for getting around Spain. I am glad you managed to book on line but for anyone not so sure of how to negotiate the site, we will help with translation etc. As you have pointed out, Cadiz is a very friendly City and full of lovely warm hearted Spanish people who love to meet visitors from other countries. The City is natural and the Spanish go about their daily routines all around. Tourism is still very low key and only in the past few years have they actually started to put up signs on the buildings to say why they are famous. Up till then, you had to rely on a local stopping to tell you the history. We do hope you come back and the Penthouse will certainly be available for you.

Perfectly located apartment with a great terrace!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time at this lovely apartment and very spacious roofterrace in el Barrio Pópular, the ancient heart of Cádiz. Close to the tapasbars, restaurants and also the city beaches.

It was perfectly clean and we had everything to our convenience. The ceiling fans helped to keep the warmth of. We didn't miss the lack of airconditioning at all.

The owner is very helpful, and reacts almost immediately when you have a question.

We stayed here for 2 weeks and we can recommend this apartment to everyone!

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for taking the time to post a review on our property. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us and hope to see you again in the near future. We try hard to make sure that the apartment is fully equipped and comfortable for our guests and thank you for confirming that you found it to be just so. The location is a major bonus for our guests with all the delights of Cadiz within walking distance and mostly on safe, pedestrian streets where you can wander and look without having to keep an eye out for cars. Many people have commented on the ceiling fans and how effective they are and of course the 2 ft thick walls of the Merchant House also keep the apartment cool in summer and warm in winter. Thank you for also commenting on our service, we are very keen that all our guests enjoy Cadiz to the full as it is a city we love and know well. We therefore are always here to help in any way we can.

Apartment 427441 Cadiz July 2012

  • 4 of 5

This is a delightful bijou apartment in the heart of Cadiz within a minute’s walk of the grand Plaza San Juan de Dios which is the location of the Ayuntamiento. The climb up the steep stairway to the third floor apartment is well worth the effort for the lovely roof top terrace but might not suit anyone who is not in the best of health or who has mobility problems.

The flat is clean and tidy with comfortable furniture and facilities. We were staying as just a couple and were able to spread ourselves out in the two double bedrooms and lounge. It would be rather too cosy if four people were to occupy the place. The rooftop terrace, were there is a table suitable for eating at, also has sunloungers and chairs and awnings to provide shade when required. The weather in early July 2012 was perfect – blue skies and sunshine with a temperature in the upper 20’s and a gentle sea breeze to keep us from getting too hot. We ate all our meals on this terrace and, although the view is not great, the sounds of the locality waft up to give a perfect holiday scenario. The roads immediately surrounding the location are too small for regular traffic except for the odd motorcycle so there is no real traffic noise at any time. As you can imagine, it was slightly noisier on the night when Spain won the Euro Football Championship.

Cadiz is a wonderful city and quite compact. All the main monuments, buildings, markets and shops are within easy walking distance of the apartment as are the beaches if you like them. We wanted a self-catering place to stay in so as we could explore what the local market had to offer and cook for ourselves. The Mercado Central is impressive and we were not disappointed. The range of locally caught fish, meat, fruit and vegetables was terrific. Just remember that as the fishing boats do not go out on Sundays, Monday is a very quite day in the market. We chose to eat in on some days and at restaurants on others. There are plenty to choose from and some are literally around the corner from the apartment. In comparison with other places we have visited recently, the restaurant prices are quite reasonable.

Transport by train, bus or ferry is easy and all the terminals are situated close together in easy walking distance of this flat. From here you can visit Jerez by train, El Puerto de Santa Maria by boat or Sanlucar and the Doñana National Park by bus. Just be aware that the published timetables are not all that reliable and you may

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. I m delighted to read that you enjoyed Cadiz and found the apartment to be clean, tidy the furniture comfortable and the Penthouse very accessible to all the sites the City has to offer. I am sorry you struggled with the stairs I was quite surprised to read that as we had a couple both in their mid 70´s who stayed there immediately before you and said they found the stairs very easy and nipped up and down several times a day. I have been up and down them thousands of times myself and as an asthmatic I would have to say I manage them fine. Good to hear that the new pedestrianisation of the whole area provided a quiet environment and I am sorry you were not inspried by the views from the terrace although you can see the very famous Cathedral Bell Tower, the Diario de Cadiz building at the Port which has recently been restored and the Local Parish church which is one of the most acclaimed in the City. The street to the fornt of the Penthouse is where the annual processions pass along and the balconies are rented out to people as they are some of the best spots in Cadiz but I suppose views are a matter of taste. The nearest restaurnt to the Penthouse takes up the ground floor of the building so if you return you may want to try it. It is very well known and highly regarded in Cadiz. Again I was surpised that you did not find the apartment spacious enough. The Penthouse has been one of Cadiz´s leading rental properties for 7 years now and 85% of our guest are two couples or families of 4. You are the first person to comment on the proportions of the property. Apartments in Cadiz are not built to a vast scale as they are really seen as somewhere to sleep. With all that is going on in the City even the locals spend little time in their apartments and the majority of time out in the squares or cafes socialising and meeting friends and family. The vast terrace at the Penthouse is highy unusual in Cadiz and the majority of our guests find it a major bonus. Hopefully you will come back to visit us and we will be delighted to welcome you.

Great stay in Cadiz

  • 5 of 5

The apartment looked just like the photos on the website. It is in a great location. One of the main squares of old Cadiz is just metres away. There is a supermarket virtually on your doorstep and a bakery just around the corner. Everything in Cadiz old town is within walking distance. The bus stop and train station are also within a short walk if you want to make day trips anywhere.

The apartment had everything we needed to cook our own meals. There is a lovely patio but in the winter we found it was really too cold to eat outside. This would be wonderful in the warmer weather.

It was really clean and clean linen was provided part way through our stay. The bathroom door handle was faulty but an e-mail to Derek and Lesley was all we needed to do and it was attended to.

Lesley and Derek were very friendly and helpful and we loved our stay in the apartment.

We did think that the list of rules with penalties was a little off-putting. We realise the need for instructions and that it is necessary to have guidelines but it could have been worded better.

Wonderful stay in Cadiz

  • 5 of 5

This is the second time we have stayed in this apartment and it was every bit as good as the first time. The apartment is exactly as the discription says and more besides. Spotlessly clean and the location is perfect. Lazying on the roof terrace is a perfect end to a days sight seeing. The owners are there at the end of the phone if you have any queries at all. We were there for 2 weeks so we visited Seville, Jerez, Rota, El Puerto de Santa Maria, Sanlucar to name but a few. Travelling to these places was really easy by train, bus or ferry. We would definately recommend this apartment.
