Description

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday cottage in Quincy-le-Vicomte - La Chouette

2 bedroom cottage that sleeps max 5

Step back in time into this enchanting cottage dating from the 19th century.

Lovingly restored and modernised, using traditional craftsmanship skills, it is nestled into a small Burgundian valley in the village of Quincy Le Vicomte. It is one of the earliest cottages to be built in this village which has a population of just under 200 people.

You walk into a spacious and comfortable sitting room with television, DVDs, a good stereo system and selection of CD's, a diverse collection of books, games and WiFi available throughout the cottage. Beyond is a modern and fully equipped kitchen with a dining area overlooking the garden below.

Beyond the oak stairs is a door leading to a double bedroom. On the floor above is the bathroom with a large shower and the second bedroom with a queen size bed and a single bed.

Centrally heated it also has a magnificent open log fire with all its magic and romance.

At the front of the cottage there is courtyard with private off road parking, and If you are lucky you might catch sight of our resident owl who lives in the barn opposite.

Down the stone steps to the back of cottage past the wood store, the walled garden opens up in front of you. In the far corner is a secluded sitting area surrounded by lavender hedges where you can help yourself to raspberries and peaches in season.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Having a house of similar character we appreciated the love and care Sarah has put into her jewel. Even our little dog Momo recognized cottage and garden immediately as her new territory which had to be defended furiously. End of September can already be cold. It took us a while to learn how the magnificent fireplace really works. At the end we had a blazing fire which turns the living room into a cozy den. Even when the wind is blowing and the rain is streaming. The kitchen was inviting. In the evenings we mostly stayed home cooking the marvelous produce we had found at the markets in the neighboring villages (a great experience). By the way, it is a treat, when the baker comes around at 8 in the morning with fresh croissants, pain au chocolat and the still warm baguettes. Living like the kings in France! We will always remember Burgundy keeping Sarah's generous hospitality in mind.

Wonderfully relaxing bolt hole. A gem!

  • 5 of 5

It was a dark and clear night. Looking up I said in a whisper "what's that?" "That", said Felix in a hushed tone, "is the Milky Way". "It's beautiful", I said with awe in my voice.

Living in London you just don't appreciate the beauty of the the night sky.

So back to day 1. We arrived and was greeted warmly by Gerald, who showed us around and ensured we knew how everything worked. He's just lovely. Sarah had left us a little welcome gift (most welcome after a long journey).

The cottage is a wonderful haven, A little bolt hole in paradise. We felt immediately at home. If you're a foodie like us then the kitchen is very well equipped - a very pleasant surprise. Oh and not to forget - a great night's sleep.

We explored the stunning countryside, and you simply must visit the Abbey de Fortney, Semour en Auxois, Noyer, Geudelon (simply fascinating) and many markets - Chablis market is a must on Sunday morning. Thanks for the tip Sarah.

Back home to the cottage and you can feel relaxation seeping into every muscle.

Sarah you made us feel welcome into your home - thank you so much. Can we adopt your cottage please?

Wonderful Little Village in Burgundy

  • 5 of 5

Sarah's stone cottage in Quincy Le Vicomte was wonderful! I spent two weeks there and despite the unseasonably cold weather during my second week, it was a truly marvelous experience and the weather didn't stop me from having a great time. The cottage is in a tiny village, which is my preference, calm, quiet and serene. The surrounding countryside is exceptionally beautiful . . . I took dozens of pictures!. Quincy was the perfect base for traveling to Semur en Auxois, Flavigny sur Ozerain, Chablis, Noyers sur Serein, Vezelay and other locations which were all within less than an hour's drive, most places much less of a drive. The cottage itself is lovely. The kitchen is great and since I do quite a bit of cooking when I travel, it was very much appreciated. . . well-equipped with everything you need. Lots of DVDs and music CDs when you're relaxing in the evening. The rooms are all large and well-furnished. Sarah is a fantastic hostess, she gave me lots of tips on how to get to places hither and yon . . . directions not in MapQuest. I don't use GPS and Sarah's directions were perfect! She's accessible and quick to respond to questions and requests for recommendations on restaurants and local attractions. I enjoyed meals at La Mirabelle in Saint Remy, the La Grange (very inexpensive and good) and L'Abbaye restaurants in Flavigny, and the Aux Vieux Paves in Semur. If you're a wine lover, Chablis is a good place to visit and buy some of the local wines. I've been to many rentals in France and I must say that this was one my favorites. The booking process was seamless. I'd go back in a heartbeat and I recommend it to anyone looking for a peaceful, quiet place to stay in Burgundy. FYI, it's a large house, so good for families.

Lots of character

  • 4 of 5

The cottage has an excellent character, plenty of room and was comfortable and warm. The kitchen very well equipped with all of those consumables you need like dish-washing powder and kitchen roll. The garden was also completely enclosed which is important when you have a lively dog!

However, I have only given 4 stars as it needs some TLC in places. For example the grass needed a good cut; the bedroom blind was broken and the front gate was on old pallet which you needed to wedge in position.

Lovely rural location in friendly village

  • 5 of 5

This is a tastefully renovated period property in a pretty, friendly village. Although there is no village shop, the mobile baker called every day with wonderful croissants- the largest we had ever seen- and the usual variety of French bread.

The surrounding countryside is beautiful and unspoilt and there is a wide variety of places to visit locally and within an hour's drive.

Sarah was very quick to reply to my emails and offered helpful suggestions about places to visit . She generously agreed to our friends parking their motor home at the property over night so that they could visit us ,as they were in the area during our stay.Gerald welcomed us on arrival and called twice to check that everything was ok.

This is an ideal holiday home for those who enjoy a rural location in an area still relatively tourist free.

Owner's Response: It is so unfortunate that you seem to have had a completely different experience from my other clients over the past 5 years. As you can see from the kind comments below, we are always on hand to resolve a problem if it arises and it is unfortunate that you didn't feel able to contact us during your stay in my beautiful Burgundian cottage with issues that could have been dealt with immediately.

An area steeped in history and rich in culture...

Semur en Auxois is a medieval town with its beautiful, (mostly) Gothic church, cobblestone streets and arty shops, buzzing with life in the summer months. Festivals and street theatre at different times of the year and a chance to stock up with food at the weekly Sunday morning market.

Near to Semur en Auxois is the Lac du Pont. You can take a lovely walk around this lake stopping for the odd dip and relaxing at the end with a refreshing drink at one of the nearby bars.

Montbard is a 10 min drive from Quincy. It has a large swimming complex with jacuzzi and sauna and is host to a bustling food market every Friday morning.

Montbard is the centre of a fascinating Industrial Archaeological complex from the early Iron Masters of the 18th century.

Winding throughout this area is the Canal de Bourgogne where you can hire boats or bring your own canoe to explore a differant world.

If you enjoy walking there are miles of footpaths winding through woodlands and valleys where you might startle a deer or watch the bird life around some of the lakes in the area. You might be driving along and suddenly see one of the many varieties of birds of prey living here.

We are on the edge of the Morvan National Park, with miles of forest and woodland to explore. Lakes with beaches and water sports.

Within half an hours drive from the cottage are the 13th century World Heritage Abbaye de Fontenay, as well as the Alesia Museoparc. Nearby is Flavigny, where the film 'Chocolat' was filmed and above all known for its Anise sweets - Anise de Flavigny who claim to follow a recipe which has been in use since 1591.. delicious.

Noyers sur Serein, one of the most beautiful villages in Burgundy is full of artisans and local crafts, a 40 minute drive from the cottage with Chablis just a little further on with its wonderful Sunday morning market. You can stock up with local fruit, vegetables and cheeses, taste some wines of Chablis and why not join the locals for a glass of chilled white wine at lunch time in the cafe..

You can combine this with a visit to some of the domaines in this region, including Irancy, St Bris and Chitry to name just a few, over the hill from Chablis.

Dijon is just over an hours drive away. It has all the ancient charm of architecture and palaces of the capital of Burgundy. You can follow the owl trail through the winding ruelles full of mystery and history.

Just beyond Dijon you are onto the wine route of the Cote d'Or where you wander down through an endless series of world famous vineyards.

One of my favourite towns is Beaune, the wine capital of Burgundy. Here you will find beautiful shops, restaurants and of course the ancient Hospice de Beaune which is poignantly beautiful.

For those staying a little longer a day trip to Paris from the cottage is very easy, with free parking in Montbard. The TGV will take you there in just over an hour.

Other Activities: Rock Climbing, canoeing and golfing, bicycles can be hired to follow the canal or explore the quiet hinterland.

Golf: The nearest golf course is in Veneray les Laumes, which is 24 kilometres away (7 hole - par 27).

The nearest 18 hole golf course is at Chateau de Chailly (par 72), near Pouilly en Auxois, 51 kilometres away.
