We really enjoyed seeing the Lake Como area.
The house Croce Amore was excellent, exactly as it had been described and perfect for us. It was very comfortable and well equipped; we like to cook on holiday, which is perhaps unusual, but it was great to have a really well equipped kitchen.
In particular the location was even better than we had anticipated, we loved being high up above the lake and the views from the garden and the bedroom terraces are fantastic. Although the house has neighbours it felt very private and we were not disturbed whatsoever.
We did all the obvious things! We rented a motorboat on the lake (twice!) which we really liked; there was little “traffic” on the lake and it was very relaxing to tour around and look at all the villas and the other sights from the water. We took the ferry across the lake and walked round Varenna and Bellagio which are both very pretty and enjoyable to visit. We visited Como, although most of the town is modern and not interesting, the old part of the town and the duomo are really worth seeing and we took the funicular up to Brunate which is also really worthwhile. We visited Villa Balbianello and Villa Carlotta – we thought that in both cases, although they are very different, both the villa itself and the gardens are fantastic and must be seen.
Our highlights were:
We hired racing bikes from Bici2000 in Lenno, they were great and we rode about 50km each day, up into the hills behind Menaggio, round the Val d’Intelvi, etc. Very strenuous (keen cyclists only), but extremely beautiful, and away from the lakeshore and the main routes, the roads are quiet and good to cycle.
Our best meal was at Trattoria de Bracconieri at Brunate, just below the funicular station, we chose it because it had a terrace with awesome views over Como, but then the food was excellent as well.
We discovered the Trombetta Express, the road train which runs all day between Menaggio and Lenno with numerous stops. It is by far the best way to travel along that stretch of lakeshore and visit Balbianello and Carlotta, you don’t have the stress of driving or parking and you can look at the scenery. You can get a day ticket and just hop on and off it really easily.
We enjoyed dealing with Happy Holiday Homes, including the staff in Menaggio, who were very helpful and friendly when we had questions. We would certainly use your company again.
Menaggio is about half way up the western side of Lago Como, an attractive and thriving town in the summer months and little more quiet in the winter! Accessible by car from Como at the south end of the lake, or Lugano in Switzerland, across the pass via Porlezza (340) above Menaggio but also by ferry from Bellagio and Varenna (where there is a train from Milan). The heart of the 'old' town gathered around Piazza Garibaldi close to Menaggio's harbour features mostly 19th century buildings in the Italian alpine style painted in muted tones. The higher part of the town has a more medieval aspect featuring narrow alleys, steep stairs and stone buildings. The old and 'new', the shops, restaurants, cafes, public squares and alleyways, the tree shaded lakeshore promenades bordered by flowers, and the well-kept villas form a wonderful and serene place to holiday.
Other Activities: Boat Rentals/Charters, Canoeing/Kayaking, Float Plane/Helicopter, Public Villas & Gardens
Golf: There are Golf clubs around Lake Como: The Cadenabbia & Menaggio Golf Club and is Italy's oldest golf course. Established in 1907 with 18 holes Par 70, it is located above Menaggio near Croce, in Grandola ed Uniti, approx. 20 min. by car. Tel: +39 344 321 03. Green Fees: Weekdays €55, Weekends and Holidays €70 Euros; Golf Cart Rental €36.
Restaurant Golf at the club serves fantastic food and is well recommended.. Guests are always welcome, please call beforehand to check course rules. Golf Club Menaggio: (Menaggio Como).
Ski: This beautiful lake region of Italy is not the best for skiing as you may imagine, despite its scenery, crisp air and near perfect visibilty and mountains capped in winter snow. It does however have Skiing opportunities at local resorts for a day out.
There is a small ski area on Mt. Lema, not more than 10 km from Lugano, but you have to be lucky to have enough snow for skiing. In Ticino, the local Swiss Canton, the best places to ski are probably either San Bernardino (south of the pass of the same name) or Airolo (south of Gotthard pass). Both are reachable in about 1 hour by car across the Swiss border.
There are direct trains to Airolo as well from Lugano and hence from Italian Stations. To S. Bernardino there is only a bus connection. For more snow try Andermatt (on the north side of Gotthard pass) which has normally good snow conditions and a good choice of runs.
The closest major ski resorts are St. Moritz and Madesimo toward the Splugen Pass which is approx.100km
