About Anrik Engelhard

I am born&grown, educated in Amsterdam, but lived and worked for years in tropical areas as a doctor (clinical and public health). My wife Carla works for the Municipality of Amsterdam. We love to make long bicycle tours in Holland and abroad. We are active in a local group of climate activists for CO2 reduction among citizens.

Anrik Engelhard purchased this cottage in 2001

Why Anrik Engelhard chose Amsterdam City

Carla became somehow 'claustrophic' in our previous 7 th floor apartment. To our surprise we ended up in Amsterdam North where nature is in the backyard....We were very lucky to find this place and never take it for granted.

What makes this cottage unique

After an exiting day in town get rid of the noise and dust. Park your car secure in front of the house at no cost. Even better, leave your car next day; take our (free!) bicycles. After 20 minutes you are in town after enjoying the view from the (free/7x24) ferry. Even taxi drivers often say: 'Wow, I didn't know we have places like this in Mokum' !! (local nick name of Amsterdam).

Great little cottage with easy access to downtown Amsterdam

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in this gardenhouse. Cosy, it had all the comforts of all small home. The cottage and general location were a great place to relax after a spending the day visiting downtown Amsterdam. We had no car and commuting to and from downtown/Schipol airport was easy. You really feel you are in the countryside, about 25-30 mins. from the Amsterdam's train station. Bikes are available at the cottage to ride around, a nice touch. We even spent a day in the immediate area, watching boats clearing the locks and walking along the river. Beds are comfortable and amenities were complete. Note the room upstairs is accessed using a steep staircase/ladder --something to note for people with mobility issues. The small supermarket nearby has everything you would need and a nice little restaurant. No regrets whatsoever renting this property and would do so again.

Great cottage/Excellent location/Brilliant owner

  • 5 of 5

I was traveling on my own so couldn't asked for more. This cottage give you everything you need. Privacy, security and more importantly peace and quite place where you can relax after busy day out. Supermarket on bottom of road is absolutely brilliant. You can taste all traditional local food and drinks. Restaurant is also very handy if you don't fancy travel anywhere around for a meal out. I had lunch and dinner there and it was delicious. Everyone is very friendly and helpful. I will be definitely back as its great location to get easy to and back from Amsterdam.

Great place to get away from the city

  • 5 of 5

The Garden House was lovely and well maintained. Anrik and Carla were not there when I arrived, but left me a note with very helpful tips, not the least of which was to ask the neighbor across the way, Ruben, for help with the bicycles if needed. He was so nice and friendly and helped me find a bike to fit. Anrik sent me directions to get to the Garden House, but the best thing I did before leaving home was to do a Google street view from the bus stop and do a virtual walk to the house. I was able to recognize landmarks and to know that I was headed in the right direction. Anrik returned before I left, so I was able to meet my gracious host. For the two days I was there, I stayed mostly in the area, walking across the locks nearby, and visiting the supermarket down the street. It was a lovely way to be introduced to the area gradually while recovering from jet lag. Thank you, Anrik and Carla!

Fabulous cottage ...everything you need...this cottage has it!

  • 5 of 5

This cozy cottage surrounded by beautiful gardens, sitting areas, and a fenced in yard, maked you feel like you are in your own piece of paradise. Right from the start of our booking process, Anrik was helpful and responded right away to any questions we had. Upon arrival Anrik was so helpful showing us maps and tour books especially seeing how it was our first visit to amsterdam. The supermarket one block away had an incredible selection of breads, cheese, meats, and anything else that you would need. The bikes were wonderful allowing us to explore the miles of bike paths which are right out your cottage door! The cottage was clean and everything you needed was right there. We especially enjoyed our housecoats which made us feel like we were at a spa! And a lovely bottle of wine made us feel like we had just arrived home! We enjoyed our days touring a very "busy" amsterdam so it was extremely refreshing at the end of the day to come home to such a peaceful relaxed spot. ....and only a short tram ride brought us to our piece of paradise! We so enjoyed our stay...wish it had been longer. We will be back and we will let others know of your beautiful cottage ! Thank you for sharing your cottage with us.

A romantic place in the north of Amsterdam

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful house, very personally and well furnitured.

In the kitchen you can cook for a whole family! A good place to be with bycicles, the ferries take you fast to Central Station.

The house is a little paradise, quiet and romantic, with a sunny terasse.

The owner is very nice and gives good advice for your trips.

We will come back soon!!!

The region around the Garden House is typically Dutch: history of our struggle against the sea; where Rembrandt painted; historical and contemporary architecture; tour along the fishermans villages along the IJsselmeer (Volendam, Edam, Marken) Open air museum Zaanse Schans. And... van Gogh, Rijksmuseum, Eye (film museum), and just walk along the canals.... Amsterdam is great, though small: everything within easy reach!

Notes:
The Garden House is an co-built cottage, very well insulated (cool in summer!), central heating (floor), rainwater reuse system (toilet). Another room in the house is (though not very frequently) used as office for an environmental foundation. By no way this will limit your privacy. No traffic noise day and night; village life, but still close to centre of town. Free parking saves you €30 per day at least.
