The Brown Bear Vacation Home at Wallowa Lake can sleep up to 10.
We rent by permit and 10 is our max that we can accept in a rental. This is also a perfect rental for smaller groups of 4 to six that enjoy relaxing with plenty of space instead of cramming into one of the smaller cabins around the lake or a motel. We also ask all guests to leave an $90 checkout fee for our cleaning / manager fee.
The Brown Bear Vacation Home is a 2500 square foot home located on the quiet westside of Wallowa Lake on Lakeshore Road. Remodeled in a fun Northstyle lodge decor, you'll find bears and moose galore inside the home and deer roaming the yard outside the home! The house has the charm of a big rambling older lake house with lots of updates.
The marinas are a short drive away for boating and fishing and you can enjoy a lake and forest view right from the decks of the Brown Bear.
The Brown Bear has a master with a king bed and a private bath. Love seat and daybed in the master as well as a unique skylight view of an eagles nest! Bedroom #2 is on the same level as the master and has two twins and a private bath right outside in the hall! The King and Twin Rooms have a living area upstairs also. On the main level, you will find two queen rooms that share a bath. These are great comfy beds and linens as this is our 2nd home and we like comfort! We can sleep eight in beds and have two extra twins for kids in the master, and a futon in the living room and an extra double on the lower laundry level if needed.
The king and 2 queen rooms are very nice and roomy for 2 adults each. The twin is a small room but has the bonus of a private deck ( easily locked off for kids) and a private bath next to it. So if you don't mind a small room with twins there is a benefit to adults having the twin room.
Large kitchen, center island, second sink, coffee bean grinder, large solid oak trestle table seats up to eight with extra seating at the large kitchen island on stools.
Family room on the main level has a huge fireplace and comfy log furnishings! There is a 2nd family room upstairs so you can separate TV or movie viewing if needed. Or just send part of your group to a different area to relax.
Six different decks to enjoy the views of the forest and the treed view of the lake.
Please remember that animals live in the forest. We are sure you will embrace the ospreys, eagles, and other abundant wildlife we ask you to forgive the smaller critters and bugs that we are not do fond of ..we do our best to keep them out of the house but since it is a house in the forest please understand they do show on occasion.

Larry Brown grew up like so many of our guests visiting Wallowa Lake every summer in his childhood. We find many of our guests are returning to re create those wonderful childhood memories. All it took was one visit for the both of us together and we fell in love with the area, the people, the scenery and quiet beauty. We enjoy living at Wallowa Lake as often as we can and enjoy sharing our home for other familes to make special memories. This is a great home for renewal of spirt and family. It welcomes you and you will feel the peace of the Wallowa Mountains and lake long after you leave. We keep it stocked with many of the things you might need in a rental so you will find spices and general pantry items to make your trip easier. We try to keep soft linens, plenty of towels, and our housekeeper leaves the place very clean. It is always a joy to walk into such a clean home and feel the stress of the world melt away almost instantly! We hope you will come and enjoy the lake and our home! We do consider trading for other properties and if we are open at the last minute, we will do special rates. Please check with us.
Judi Brown purchased this house in 2002
Wallowa Lake has all the serenity we need in our lives, but also has plenty of hiking and other activities to keep our guests busy.
Deer in the yard, peaceful views through the trees of Wallowa Lake. Lounging on the decks on a hot sunny day! Watching the birds fly in and out of the Eagles nest!
Our "bear" cabin was perfect! We found ourselves in very cheerful, clean and well stocked living accommodations. It was obvious the owners take grat pride in keeping the house in good repair. We found ourselves on a deck every morning drinking our coffee and back on the decks drinking wine in the evening! A new stereo provided excellent background music and we loved the colorful lights strung over the fireplace. Bathrooms were not in short supply and we are talking about 5 women!
Every form of wildlife wandered through the property during our stay. (except bears!) Hiking or having dinner in Joseph was easily accessible. We thank the Brown's for the use of their cabin. What a wonderful, enjoyable stay their home made for the five of us on our high school reunion!
We enjoyed the property very much. It was well stocked and very comfortable. I would suggest more outside lighting especially the stairs. I actually fell coming back at night.
We enjoyed the variety of rooms and spaces, and much of what we needed was provided.
We enjoyed the quiet of the Lake and Mountains yet it was easy to get to Joseph and the Marina area. We had small children with us and having two separate floors of living space allowed my sister and her family privacy upstairs and our friend, my husband and I to have quiet on the decks and downstairs. The house was clean and well maintained. Sitting on the deck and enjoying the scenery and quiet made for a very relaxing vacation. We cooked in most every night and found the kitchen very accommodating.
House easily accommodated all 9 adults. Very homey, with fully equipped kitchen separate areas both inside and out for large or small groups to gather. Comfortable beds and spaces for folks to read or relax either alone or together. Weather was warm and sunny but never hot. We even had some light rain and the cabin was cozy and warm. Love the homey decor with plenty of seating to visit. The well stocked pantry with cooking and eating utensils was great and gave us an opportunity to make family favorites. We ate all meals at the cabin. Stairs were a little daunting as we are not spring chickens. Bathroom toilets needed to be treated with tenderness. I can think of a more beautiful location than Wallowa Lake. We truly enjoyed out time together and our stay at the Bear Den.
We had ample space for our large group. We found the dining room and living room to be nice locations to gather and chat with each other. I used the deck with with the umbrella table to drink coffee in the mornings. I wish we had more time to just relax, but we were there for a wedding and we mainly used it for a base to sleep and eat. Judi was helpful with her description of the place and what is expected. We would use it again.
Enjoyed coffee on the front deck in the mornings. We walked and road our bikes every day. The cabin had more than enough room for our two families. Kitchen was a little hard to cook large meals for the two families. The open kitchen allowed for games around the kitchen table in the evenings. This was our 3rd summer to Wallowa Lake and we never seem to tire of the views and areas to explore.
Our home is on the quiet side of Wallowa Lake but still an easy drive to the more bustling side where the go carts, campgrounds and more people can be found!
