About Joanna Green
Hello travelers. Designing and building Owl Moon Cottage was our first major post-retirement project. We wanted a way to continue to make interesting new friends from around the world, while staying at home on our little homestead farm, working in the garden. We are also both musicians, and are trying to devote more time to our music and writing. Art and I met here in Ithaca in 1978, and have been married since 1981 - OMG! We raised our three awesome children right here, although at one point we moved with our whole family to a banana grove on Maui for a couple years. We've done our best to recreate our relaxed Hawaiian lifestyle here in the Finger Lakes! If you've read this far and you're still interested: I worked in the field of sustainable agriculture and community food systems at Cornell University for 25 years before founding the non-profit Groundswell Center for Local Food & Farming here in Ithaca. Art was the first General Manager of our local food co-op, GreenStar, human resources manager with local clothing company Angelheart Designs, and business manager for local green-building firm Taitem Engineering - "Technology As If The Earth Mattered." We feel incredibly fortunate to be living in this very special place on the planet. We hope our guests can take inspiration from the natural beauty, tranquility and magic of Owl Moon Cottage. Perfect In Every Way
If you are planning to visit Finger Lakes, THIS is the place to stay. A beautiful cottage in a remote area next to an amazing state park. We enjoyed a full week of glorious peace and comfort, close enough to all the great destinations the area has to offer: waterfalls, hiking, wineries, breweries, the Cornell area. Joanna and Art provide a wonderful place to stay.
It was so great to meet you and Linda! We're so glad you enjoyed your stay, and hope you might come back this way again some time in the future!
The perfect place to rest
We loved Owl Moon Cabin! It was the perfect place to unplug and reconnect with nature. The kids even enjoyed the tech free time to play games, work on a puzzle, and explore all the waterfalls. We will come back again and again!
So glad you all enjoyed it here. We look forward to your return!
Owl Moon Cottage is located literally within the boundaries of Robert H. Treman State Park. From your doorstep it is an easy one mile walk to Lucifer Falls, one of the most spectacular and most-visited gorge waterfalls in the Finger Lakes. The Finger Lakes Trail runs just a few hundred yards from the cottage, on its route from the NY-Pennsylvania border to the Catskills. At the same time, we're only an 8 mile drive to the vibrant heart of downtown Ithaca, 10 miles to the Cornell University campus, and 10 miles to Ithaca College.
Excellent information about all the hiking trails in the Ithaca area can be found at IthacaTrails.org. You will also find maps of some of the nearby hiking trails in our Guest Information Notebook when you arrive.
Lucifer Falls and the Treman Park Trails. Our favorite trails are right here in Robert H. Treman Park. Just walk down to the bottom of Woodard Road, turn right on the Park Road, walk to the end of the parking lot and you’re there at the trailhead. The Gorge Trail takes you right into the gorge, and it’s just a very short distance to Lucifer Falls, a spectacular 125 foot drop. The Rim Trail follows the opposite side of the gorge at a higher level, and also offers fabulous views of the falls. If you want to hike both trails, you can take one all the way down to the swimming area at Lower Treman Park and take the other trail back. It’s a little less than 5 miles round trip. Or you can cross over to the other trail part-way down the gorge for a much shorter loop. The Red Pine Trail is also one of our favorite trails, and much less traveled than the other two.
The Treman Park trails are generally open from late April until the third Sunday of November. Do NOT hike the trails when closed - they are not safe and you will be fined.
The Finger Lakes Trail runs through Treman Park en route from the NY-Pennsylvania border to the Catskills. It crosses Woodard Road about half-way down to the Park Road - a two minute walk. It’s great for trail running, and much less traveled than the Gorge and Rim Trails. The FLT is open year-round.
RESTAURANTS & COFFEE SHOPS
Many great options! Here are some of our personal favorites.
Gimme Coffee - Best coffee in town, but not much of a selection of food.
Ithaca Bakery - Best deli-bakery in town. Great place for breakfast or lunch.
Finger Lakes Cider House - Located on an organic farm and co-owned by four local cideries. Great food, great ciders, and a beautiful drive through the countryside to get there. s
Mix Restaurant - Fabulous tapas style, multicultural cuisine.
Ithaca Beer Co. Taproom - In summer a great place to relax outdoors with plenty of wide open space - picnic tables, games, sometimes music.
Northstar House Pub - Creative, cozy American bistro with local, organic fare & rotating beer list.
Maxie's Supper Club and Oyster Bar - Southern dishes, shucked shellfish & live music.
Saigon Kitchen - Excellent pho, vermicelli & other Vietnamese favorites.
The most awesome imaginable swimming hole can be found right at Lower Treman Park just a five minute drive or a 45-minute hike from the cottage. You can actually sit in the waterfall! You can also swim at Buttermilk Falls and in Cayuga Lake at Taughannock State Park.
The Ithaca area is great for biking, as long as you're prepared for lots of hills! If you are bringing your bike, check out the Finger Lakes Cycling Club for regular group rides and suggested routes.
BOATING, FISHING & PADDLE BOARDING
Enjoy a variety of water sports on Cayuga Lake or any one of the other gorgeous Finger Lakes. Motor boats, kayaks, canoes and paddleboards are available for rent from several local businesses.
OTHER THINGS TO DO AND SEE
Other Finger Lakes Waterfalls. Besides Lucifer Falls, the most spectacular are Watkins Glen and Taughannock Falls. You can see Buttermilk Falls and Ithaca Falls year-round, without really getting out of your car.
Finger Lakes Wineries, Breweries, Cideries and Distilleries. There are LOTS of them! There are also several winery tour companies that will take you around so you don’t have to worry about driving. Lots of fun!
The Old Mill House at Upper Treman Park. It’s a beautifully restored grain mill with 4 floors of water-powered machinery once used to sort, clean and mill local grains. History, technology and food enthusiasts will really enjoy checking it out.
The Sciencenter is not just for kids!
Cornell Botanic Gardens including an Herb Garden, Flower Garden, Groundcover Collection, Tropical Container Display, and more. The grounds are open year round.
Corning Museum of Glass is home to the world’s most comprehensive collection of glass, the world’s foremost library on glass, and one of the top glassworking schools in the world.
