Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday apartment in Orton - Cromwell Apartment

1 Bedroom apartment to sleep 2 in the East Lakeland village of Orton

Orton Hall is a Grade II listed building dating from 1662 set in its own 7 acre grounds, with lawns, gardens and woodland. The Jacobean Hall is built of local limestone and has been sympathetically restored whilst retaining many original features. The Cromwell Suite lies on the Ground Floor and provides luxurious self contained accommodation. It comprises a comfortable lounge with dining area overlooking the Lawns, well equipped kitchen, romantic double bedroom with large 4-poster bed and bathroom with shower over. Electricity, bed linen and towels are included. Guests are invited to make full use of all communal facilities including the wood panelled Great Hall with its comfortable seating, imposing fireplace, pool table and Baby Grand Piano, Laundry Room and magnificent grounds. A short walk leads to the centre of Orton village which has a pub serving food, local ales and fine wines, well stocked village shop and PO, Kennedy's Chocolate Shop, Silver Yard Cafe and welcoming church of All Saints.

Orton Hall is situated a short walk from the delightful Cumbrian village of Orton, nestled in limestone country between the Orton Fells, the Howgills and the Eastern Lake District. It has easy road access to the Lake District and the North Pennines and is likely to become part of the extended Yorkshire Dales National Park following consultation in 2012.

The immediate area provides beautiful walks along the Lune or the Lyvennet without the mass tourism of the Lakeland resorts. It is a haven for flora and fauna with orchids, birds eye primroses and red squirrels to be seen.

Orton Farmers Market takes place on the second Saturday of each month. Nearest market towns with a choice of supermarkets are Kendal and Penrith, and smaller centres are at Appleby, Kirkby Stephen and Sedbergh. Surprisingly good groceries and meat are available at J38 Services at 3km and Westmorland Services on the M6 at 5km.

The village pub is The George which has new tenants in 2011. They offer simple but good quality food, wine and beer and have regular special events during the week. Within a few miles are the excellent Butchers Arms at Crosby Ravensworth and the Kings Head and Black Swan at Ravenstonedale. The Cross Keys and Dalesman at Sedbergh are a little further afield but well worth a visit. The Cross Keys is a superb restaurant at Cautley Spout but supplies no alcohol - guests may bring there own bottles of wine to be served at table.

Orton Hall does have wireless access freely available courtesy of one of the owners but is particularly well suited for those seeking tranquility.

My husband and I stayed at Orton Hall while we participated in Total Warrior in Shap. It was about a 15 minute drive to the venue and very convenient.

The property is beautiful! And walking through the front door we immediately smelled all the wood, which was throughout the great hall walls and ceiling. The apartment was comfortable, and it housed the necessities.

If you are a coffee drinker, be aware that the UK seems to provide only instant in their hotel rooms, and so also was the case at Orton Hall. But there was an ample supply, and a pint of milk.

We had a wonderful view of the grounds from the large bay window. English cottontails scampering about was a charming sight. As I said the grounds are beautiful, and we enjoyed exploring them. The whole area is stunning, really. And I wish we'd had more time to walk and admire all the cottages in the village.

Truly it is a village, boasting one restaurant open for lunch and dinner, one cafe open for breakfast and tea, one chocolate shop, one very small grocery store,(think 1 half dozen eggs, 2 pounds of butter, 2 bags of lettuce, bacon, sausage, spaghetti sauce, etc. It was fine, but they didn't even have ground beef....perhaps someone had already purchased it for the week. 😄) And a post office. But Tebay is just down the road, and I'm told they have a full market, this is also where we went for gasoline.

The location of Orton Hall is ideal and just a short walk to the Village centre.

You'll have to pass the dairy farm on the way, but it's a short-lived odorous section. And the beautiful stone walls make up for it.

My only wish is that there had been a coffee pot with really coffee. But I'd stay here again!....id just somehow travel with a mini kuerig or coffee press.

Owner's Response: Glad these guests enjoyed their stay at Cromwell. We do provide a cafetiere and the village shop sells excellent ground coffee (Farrers). We don't generally leave fresh ground coffee, as most people just want a quick cup before going out.

Remote, quiet, private

  • 3 of 5

The unit is nicely done up within a large manor house. The stay was very quiet - a bit more remote than we expected. Perfect getaway for someone looking for a quiet break, too remote if you're looking for a village to dine / shop in.

Owner's Response: Response. Orton Village has one hotel/pub which serves evening meals and is very popular being on the coast to coast route. It is in easy walking distance of Orton Hall. The village also has two cafes, Kennedy's chocolate factory (you can see the chocolates being made) and Orton Scar cafe both serve food. There is also a very well stocked post office and village store. well known for it's excellent brand of ground coffee. There is also a farmers market on the 2nd Saturday of the month, people come from all over to attend. A few miles away in the village of Ravonstonedale there are 2 excellent inns which serve food, both are in the good pub guide. There are many other good places to eat within an easy drive. Hope this information is helpful. Sue.

Ideal get away from it all romantic break

  • 5 of 5

We went for valentines day that is also our anniversary .great old place to stay. Had everything you could need in this suite. Very quiet even in the communal area where we were able to have our own drink and a game of pool.

We never bumped into anyone there during our weekend. Location was great with a pub very near. Will be staying again .

Beautiful, tranquil, retreat ideally located

  • 5 of 5

The location is ideal and very beautiful, making it a lovely stay. Very relaxed and cosy apartment, clean, well furnished and the additional welcoming touches from the owner made us very welcomed.

The local pub is a short stroll, with nice food and good ale! Just opposite the chocolate shop, what more does one need!!

As the apartment is so conveniently located for access to the Lakes or Dales. We explored many places during our stay, was a great base. When bad weather prevented too much walking, staying in the apartment was a relaxing treat. It very much felt like home from home. We shall definitely be returning. Thank you

I would definitely recommend this accommodation to friends, relatives, actually everyone.

Orton is a small historic village, now famed for its monthly Farmers' Market and its Chocolate Factory, Shop and Tea Rooms. The Orton Fells provide a tranquil, scenic backdrop to the village. Much of this dramatic limestone scenery can be freely explored on foot, cycle or horseback and was used in the filming of 'The Tenant of Wildfell Hall'. The peace is only broken by the sounds of the curlew and the skylark and the area is a haven for rare wildlowers and orchids. Orton is situated midway between Kendal and Penrith and provides a perfect base to explore the Lake District, Upper Eden Valley or the Western Dales of Yorkshire. Cumbria's Lake District holds tourist attractions galore and was the home of Beatrix Potter. Sedbergh is developing a reputation as a book town to rival Hay on Wye and is an easy drive away past the undiscovered peaks of the Howgills. Orton lies on Wainwright's Coast to Coast walk and is only 8 miles from stations on the Settle to Carlisle railway
