Makrigialos: Situated on the south east coast of Crete, Makrigialos is only 30 minutes from the working towns of Ierepatra (on the south coast) and Sitia (on the north coast).

Makrigialos is characterised by some of the best beaches in all of Crete (and that is saying something). There are many secluded coves, all gently lapped by crystal clear waters of the mediterranean sea.

A mountain ridge runs West to East across the island and it is this which gives Southern Crete it's own very special climate. The mountains shield this part of the island from any 'inclement' weather. Additionally Makrigialos itself is surrounded by it's own mountain range. This geography means that the Makrigialos area has the best climate in all of Crete, and possibly the entire Mediterranean.

The area is popular with tourists all through the winter who prefer the quieter times or like to trek or walk the gorges.

It is not difficult to understand why the area produces what is considered to be the best olive oil in the world.

Things to do...: Crete really is a place that allows you to do as little as much as you want.

We strongly recommend that you hire a car. The island is quite simply beautiful, and it would be a shame to visit Crete and not see some of it. Driving is easy and car hire is very reasonable. For the price of pre-booked airport transfers for a family of four, you can probably hire a car for a week. If you wish to hire a car, we can recommend the company that we use. We do not take any commission from them, we just want our clients to be recommended to the companies that give the best service.

If you don't wish to hire a car for the entire duration of your stay, the resort management company (LMC) offer pre-booking of airport transfers for up to four people at a time. Similarly, a pre-booked car shuttle service is offered between the resort and the town centre.

All manner of water sports are available within easy reach, including scuba diving, fishing, sailing, etc.....

Other nearby attractions include:

The gorges of Pefki, Dasaki and Pervolakia

Day boat trip to nearby Chrissi & Koufonisi Islands

Wine-tasting at the Kapsa monastery

Traditional Cretan evenings in Pefki.

Makrigialos hosts a very popular international music festival in June.

Visit to Spinalonga

The Lagada Resort Complex: Lagada Resort in Makrigialos is a small, modern complex of townhouses, penthouses, apartments and bungalows. Built to the highest standards, incorporating the most modern, environmentally friendly materials, and with the emphasis on integrating the buildings with the beautiful Cretan environment.

During the peak season the on-site 'Lagada Cafe-Bar' serves food and drinks for lunches, dinner, or just coffee, beer, wine, or cocktails at any time of day.

By the use of natural, sustainable materials and with energy saving properties, Bay View is designed to provide comfort, atmosphere, and enjoyment for everyone who lives or visits here whilst integrating sensitively with the spectacular natural beauty of the area and the environment.

About Steve & Julie Philpot

My husband Steve and I live in the UK and have two daughters in their twenties. We own and run two businesses, one in the construction industry, and another in interior design. Our aim for the Townhouse has always and will always be to offer the sort of superior standard of rental accomodation that we look for ourselves whenever we travel. We take great pride in what we offer to our clients and we strive to keep the property to the highest possible standard. The house is very much our house in Makrigialos as well as a property available for rent, which is why it has been designed to be individual in it's decor and not a generic rental property.

Steve & Julie Philpot purchased this villa in 2009

Why Steve & Julie Philpot chose Sitia

The reasons we chose to buy the Townhouse are simply that Makrigialos is a truly magical place; the views from our lounge, bedroom, balconies and roof terrace are just unbelievable; and the combination of style and available amenities offered us everything we wanted for ourselves and our guests.

What makes this villa unique

The Townhouse is a unique property at Lagada Resort. It is one of only two similar properties that have private roof terraces, it is the only one of it's type that is a corner property, and it is only the frontline properties that have the views to the sea and mountains from the living and bedroom areas. The house is individually designed and furnished to a very high bespoke standard. The house has independent air conditioning in all rooms, which not all properties even at Bayview will have. There is a private wifi internet connection in our house, so you aren't tethered to an ethernet cable and are able to stream TV content should you wish.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Micheline, Roland, Maureen Bruxelles, Belgique

THE place to relax

  • 5 of 5

After staying here for 10 days I can safely say that I have never felt so relaxed!

The apartment is beautifully furnished with two comfortable bedrooms and a homely living space with a range of cooking appliances.

Most importantly though, the view: the apartment has a spectacular view of the sea from its two balconies (perfect for a romantic view of the sunset!)

The resort itself has an impressive pool area that is the ultimate place to sun yourself with a good book, or go for a relaxing dip.

Thanks to the resorts on-site taxi service, you can easily get to the plethora of delicious restaurants that Makrygialos has to offer.

Compliments to the on-site cafe that adds a real buzz to the place, especially thanks to its friendly staff. It is incredibly handy for breakfast and lunch, as well as a nice cold beer, wine or cocktail.

A refreshing gem overlooking the sea and mountains

  • 5 of 5

My wife and child were immediately taken with the contemporary feel of the Philpot's property. The accommodations were clean, fresh and modern. In particular, the roof deck offered an incredible 360 degree view of the quaint town of Makrigialos, sheer mountain cliffs and the wind-swept coast. Far from the tourist crowds of the Northern Coast, the Bayview property offered all of the convenience of nearby tavernas and super markets while allowing us to relax in the resort atmosphere. We plan to return soon.

Wonderful relaxing holiday at The Townhouse !

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from The Townhouse after a two week holiday and wish we were still there !! we had the most wonderful time, the apartment was just gorgeous, beautifully decorated, spotless and with a fab roof terrace with stunning views.Rosemary the housekeeper took us to the apartment when we arrived in Makrigialos and had a welcome hamper for us, nothing was too much trouble for her.

Bayview is a lovely complex, kept to a very high standard by Chris and Anja who were always on hand if you needed any information or advice. Our two teenagers spent hours in the swimming pools and even though we went in July & August the pools and the sunbeds were never that busy, bliss !!

We had a car for the two weeks which you need. Its a two hour drive from the airport to Makrigialos, which we knew and we also enjoyed travelling to Elounda where the children enjoyed the watersports, lovely restaurants and shops, we went onto Plaka which is beautiful and got a boat to Spinalonga which is a must especially if you have read The Island ! we enjoyed Agios Nikolaus which has a lovely atmoshere in the evenings and and also the more local town Sittia. Our favourite restaurant in Makrigialos was the Taverna on Diaskari beach, a beautiful setting with fantastic food and lovely staff,Dragons Cave was another favourite, too many to choose from !

I would highly recommend The Townhouse and cant wait to return one day ! Many thanks Julie & Steve for sharing your lovely apartment , Sharon & Steve

Beautiful place ,outstanding views,very relaxing

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from The Townhouse , where we had a lovely chilled holiday . The accommodation is very clean, well equipped and furnished to an extremely high standard, with beautiful views from every balcony and rooftop.

The DVD collection was a plus for 2 teens and a 21 year old ,on the few times we stayed in to eat , as was the aircon

The 2 pools are well maintained and on more than one occasion , we had the smaller one to ourselves, great to come back to after a day trip !

Chris & Anja , based on site at Bayview ,were happy to help with any queries and we had warm bread & croissants delivered many mornings . Rosemary was also lovely , and checked on a couple of occasions ,that everything was ok for us.

A car is a must as Bayview ,even if you just intend on staying in the local area, but you can get most of your daily requirements in Makrigialos . The bakery /coffee shop is an essential stop , which is where the bread /croissants come from, and so much more , the ice- cream being a delight . We were known to make a couple of visits a day some days !

Make a stop at the little house on the road just before Bayview , the family are lovely and very generous with their organic produce, a watermelon was picked specially.

Diaskari beach ( sign for Green Beach ) is great for being fairly quiet, beds and shade to rent and a lovely taverna to provide a lazy lunch.

There are a variety of restaurants to choose from in the village and along the waterfront , including fish , cretan dishes and pizzas from the pizza oven.

If you are looking for a relaxing holiday ,away from the crowds , in first class accommodation , then this is the place for you , we will certainly be returning.

Perfect family holiday

  • 5 of 5

We spent a glorious week at Steve & Julie’s Townhouse Bayview Crete, in September 2013. Our holiday was perfect in every way, we were so grateful to Rosemary for the very warm welcome, and also the little extras that were left for us on our arrival. The townhouse is simply beautiful, spacious, very clean and so well equipped. The view from the balcony took our breath away each time. We enjoyed keeping the sliding doors open to let all the sunshine pour into the living room and kitchen, where our little one year old daughter practised her walking & we enjoyed our complimentary wine. The townhouse is very tastefully decorated making it feel very homely & luxurious at the same time. On those extra hot days, the air conditioning was a nice welcome.

The rooftop is a wonderful place to enjoy morning tea, the magnificent sea & mountain views before heading out for the day. The beaches in the area are so beautiful, the main one in the village was perfect for our little one. The restaurants in the area also all very good, not to mention the takeaways for those lazy nights in. Every afternoon we would head back to Bayview and splash in the wonderful swimming pools. It was amazing to have a large enough pool to swim laps & keep fit - a nice surprise.

We cannot fault anything at Bayview and thoroughly enjoyed our first family beach holiday with our daughter - Thank you Steve & Julie. We hope to be back very soon.

7 highlights why choosing this house!

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from our 2 weeks‘ journey to Crete where we – a family with three sons, aged 8, 12 and 14 - spent the second week (28th September until 5th October 2013) in Julie and Steve’s Townhouse. The apartment was exactly that what it had promised – we were absolutely satisfied. Highlight no. 1: the roof terrace, where we were having breakfast and some dinners, where we enjoyed the marvellous view to the Sea and the mountains, where we followed the sun sets while having a glas of wine and where we were pleased to see a wonderful sky of stars when it was night – and with luck we even saw some unforgetable shooting-stars! Highlight no. 2: the other 2 balconies on the first and second floor which invite to reading a good book while it is – during day time - too hot on the roof terrace. Highlight no. 3: the bright living area on the second floor with the well equipped kitchen. Highlight no. 4: the two swimming pools we all used each day after making a excursion and which mainly we had for ourselves. Highlight no. 5: the reservation procedure and information we got from Julie and Steve prior our journey – very easy, uncomplitated, and useful. Highlight no. 6: Rosemary who welcomed us in Makrigialos and took us to the house and who was very kind. Highlight no. 7: the ideal situation of Makrigialos: we did a lot of excursions, e.g. to many nice beaches near Bayview, to Agios Nicolaos, Sitia, Zakros, Xerokambos and sorroundings and followed also some of Julie and Steves proposals of tavernas. Hoping to come back to Crete one day we thank you, Julie and Steve, for making our stay in Makrigialos so unforgetable.

Car: recommended

On the South East coast of Crete, with a mountain backdrop, Makrigialos benefits from a microclimate giving it the best weather on the island. Makrigialos has a small, lively harbour that comes alive at night with numerous local restaurants and cafes serving the freshest local food. This is not an area that is commercialised or abounds with nightclubs. If you want a taste of the real Crete, this is for you. The area is famous for the production of the finest olive oil in the world. The natural beauty of the coast is simply staggering with deserted coves and bays seemingly round every turn. Local waterside tavernas welcome you with cool drinks and delicious food. The nearest larger towns of Ierapetra and Sitia both have bustling water fronts with cafes spilling out onto the promenades. Both have good shopping, but if you want to go a step further, Heraklion offers shopping to international standards. The area offers all manner of activities & water sports. Spinalonga is well worth a day trip.

Other Activities: Boat trips to nearby islands, sea kayaking, snorkelling, trekking, shopping, restaurants, bars.
