Overview

About the property

Come Relax, Refresh, Retreat In A Quaint, Stone Cottage On Our Working Farm!

Our hand-built stone cottage is rustic, simple, straight-forward, and perfect for those seeking a stress-free getaway from city living!

To add to the beauty and peace of the Cottage, I am now able to offer the skills of an experienced massage therapist, who brings her table and supplies to the property. One recent guest who has experienced professional massage therapy in her world-wide travels, said, "Elise gave me the best massage I have ever had!" (Advanced notice necessary-payment made directly to Elise.)

With 4 beds and 1 bathroom, we can comfortably accommodate 4 people, however, for families or groups that don't mind close quarters, we have two cots, so we can adapt to six people in a pinch. (Keep in mind that this is a former hunting cabin - very comfortable, but not luxurious. There is a collection of family-friendly DVD's and a player, excellent Wi-fi for live streaming, but no TV.

PLEASE NOTE: I cannot accommodate animals inside the Cottage because so many of my guests have allergies.

A spacious kitchen allows you to create custom meals – be warned - it has a lower than normal ceiling (about 7'.) The loft is accessed by a steep, narrow, low-clearance stairway that can be difficult for small children, but there is a "kiddie gate" for use to prevent little ones from climbing unexpectedly. There are two steps up into both the bathroom and kitchen. The bathroom has a shower – no tub.

A most interesting, fun time to visit The Cottage is during our annual spring kidding season when the fields are literally "jumping" with baby goats. Normally kidding occurs during May and June.

Ask about our discount for clergy retreats and active military personnel. We are located just off of I-44 south and east of Carthage – due east of Joplin, with easy access to area attractions (complete directions will be given after booking. )

SOME RECENT REVIEWS:

We loved being at this home on the range! We were two couples and appreciated the cabin and the surroundings. Even the cat kept close watch on us. Merre baked fresh bread for us and we had wonderful farm fresh eggs for breakfast. Lots of fun for all of us and we all slept well too!

What a wonderful, peaceful getaway!

California - April, 2016

Merre was so sweet. We loved the country setting. We walked the land, pet the horses, and fell in love with Jill the cat. The cottage was cozy and clean. Missouri - March 2016

We were looking for a relaxing place where we could enjoy family time, and that was exactly what we found. Merre was very accommodating; there was homemade bread and a friendly outdoor cat waiting for us upon arrival! The neighborhood was quiet and a close drive to town, but also felt like an oasis with the little cottage yard where you could hang clothes out to dry, watch the horses and goats, and enjoy the sunset and sunrise. Thank you for having us! Texas - March 2016

As always, a delightful trip. The Wired Women have been spoiled by Merre. It's the special touches that make it so unique and quaint. She makes us feel like we have known her forever. The fire pit was a treat. Thank you so much for your hospitality. Truly, The Wired Women !! ♡♡♡

Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas - March 2016

This little cottage was the most wonderful piece of of Missouri. The hostess was the most gracious person I have had the pleasure of meeting. The cottage was exactly what my family needed just at the perfect time. It was clean and inviting, with a full kitchen. My kids loved being able to run and play in the big country yard. The host was always available but never intrusive. I would choose to stay ONLY here next time I am in Missouri! Germany - February 2016

What a very sweet and fun little treasure this cottage is! Don't miss the chance to stay here if you're in the area, even for a night, as we were on our cross country trip. We adored driving in and parking between the big red barn and the little matching cottage, greeted by two super friendly kitties and hearing the goats nearby. We had a lovely evening watching a movie and admiring the beautifully, carefully decorated interior, before waking up to a magical fog-filled morning before we took our coffee out to the yard to explore. A dog herded the goats for a visit before we got to go out and offer the horses a provided-treat in their pasture. Beautiful rolling hills, lovely landscaping around the cottage, a great outdoor patio for working or to relax. Plenty of room upstairs and downstairs for sleeping and making oneself at home, even though it is not a huge place. Indiana - Nov 2015

About Merre Putnam

I love: creating and designing things, learning, gardening, reading, anything having to do with off the beaten path adventure, fun, uniqueness, and bargains. Re-purposing things and working with people is energizing to me, but the best is hanging out with our 8 children (4 original and 4 spouses) and eight grandchildren. I enjoy traveling and staying with other Airbnb hosts.

Awesome

Highly recommend this awesome cottage! So peaceful and relaxing. The cottage was spotless and Merre was great! My son was competing in the regional track meet in Joplin so it was so nice to come back to this place and unwind. My daughter LOVED feeding the Horse and loving on Jill the cat. Merre you was a absolute blessing to my family, thanks so much for your kindness!

A Peaceful Respite

  • 5 of 5

This country cottage was a peaceful, relaxing stop for us during a long road trip. Merre was a wonderful host, even leaving us farm fresh eggs, home made bread, and fruit in the fridge. It was fun to watch the goats, horse, and cows, and to be greeted by Jill the cat whenever we went outside. Great views from the balcony, too!

Step back in time and relax...

  • 5 of 5

I am so happy that I was blessed with a two night stay at this wonderful property. There aren't many things I can say that haven't already been said. The reviews are all accurate. It is an idyllic setting. Rural Missouri at it's finest. Sitting outside, in the back area, facing the fields and horse and cows, was so relaxing.

Merre insures that you are fully informed and are afforded the privacy that this location provides. She is very responsive to messages and is only a phone call away if anything happens that the guest can't figure out how to fix.

Something funny... I have been gluten free for over 45 years. Merre had a freshly baked loaf of bread awaiting me. It was torture smelling it and not being able to eat it.

Do not hesitate to book. You owe it to yourself!!

Wonderful farm experience

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for one night as a stopping point in the middle of a long car trip. After a week with heavy sightseeing and lots of visits with family, we were able to totally relax at The Cottage. The house is definitely rustic, yet cozy, and we had everything we needed there. The magic is in being immersed in farm life, with Jill the cat, Fuerte the horse, a half dozen goats and their kids, the goat herding dog, barn swallows and a herd of cattle all within sight. Hosts Merre and Farmer John make you feel right at home. We appreciated the chocolate chip cookies and farm fresh eggs. We even had a goat milking lesson, and although the children were too shy to join in, the adults gave it a try and learned a lot. The landscaping around the historic house and barn was well done. We also enjoyed the superb stargazing, and a peaceful morning walk along the country road. This was a fantastic experience for kids and grownups alike. Highly recommended.
