About Vicki Moffatt
About Dave and Vicki Moffatt Vicki and I live in Austin Texas. I'm a Boston native and she's a Texan-so we have an interesting time figuring out each other's accents! I work in the leadership development field and Vicki taught private voice but is now retired. Visiting the cabin 3-4 times a year to stay and vacation/work is one of our favorite things to do. Vicki is a highly creative and hard-working renovation 'hobbyist', and along with other tradesmen, this property took over 4 months to renovate after purchase. Me-I'm the janitor and handyman. We don't have any kids, but we do have two dogs and one cat. We purchased this property in 2011 and just before renovating the main house in 2016 as a vacation home during July and the beginning of August, we named the entire property "Forest Houses" and named the main house "Forest House" as our new vacation home. We also have our original vacation home, also listed on HomeAway, that we purchased in 2009 called "Teddy Cloud" cabin. Why Dave and Vicki Moffatt chose New Mexico When I first moved out west from Boston I ended up in New Mexico, and used to ride my motorcycle up into Cloudcroft. I promised myself I would one day buy a cabin in the Sacramento Mountains, and finally did it! New Mexico is a special place for us-my Mom and niece live in Las Cruces. Cloudcroft is a perfect getaway for us because it's so small and relatively undeveloped (compared to nearby Ruidoso). Getting up to the mountains is something we plan for and anticipate all year.

Why Vicki Moffatt chose Cloudcroft
When we bought this property we loved that it had one main house with 3 A Frame houses just up the hill. It had been neglected and lived in hard, so much had to be done to bring it back to life. It took four months of living in the main house and working 14+ hour days with numerous things going on at the same time to see some sparkle but we finally made it happen. We thought about turning the main house into a vacation home for about 3 years or so, but on July 10, 2016, we just said "Let's do it!" and so began our adventure with this new vacation cabin! Allot of TLC went into the planning and we hope you enjoy it as much as we have. We want to share the experience with you in this cozy and quirky house with it's big block wood spiral staircase, glass tiled fireplace, stage area in the downstairs bedroom and rather large soaking tub in the upstairs bath. We love this cabin and our long term residents just up the hill enjoy their A Frames, as our residents have lived there for quite a while. This is a quiet family or romantic setting, in what we consider to be one of the most unique and still quant villages in the beautiful forest covered mountain setting in Cloudcroft, New Mexico. Nearly 9000 ft. keeps the mountain air fresh and clean and cool, so much of the year, that many of our neighboring cities residents come to enjoy the beautiful weather.
What makes this Cabin unique
Cloudcroft has much to offer. It's friendly, has fun shopping, great food and numerous family and friend activities if you so choose. Ski Cloudcroft is a popular destination, along with other great activities. The Cloudcroft Chamber of Commerce list all of these: Camping, Alpine SkiingHiking, Mountain Biking, Fishing, Cross Country Skiing, Repelling, Snow Play, Museum, Festivals, Rodeo, Ice Skating, Tennis, Horseback Riding, Golf, Miniature Golf, Disc Golf, Scenic Byways, Fitness Trails and Street Dances. If you want to visit the Chamber of Commerce for information, it's a short walk from Forest House and there is a park, along with the ice skating rink in the same vicinity. The great thing about staying in the village is that you can walk to so many great places including shopping and dining as well!

Cozy, comfortable and convenient!
We had the pleasure of staying at Forest House in late July. This place is just what we needed for a little relaxation. It is convenient to town and trails. Spent one day going to Ruidoso which was an easy and beautiful drive. Be sure to bring food but that is all you need. Be prepared for the largest bathtub you have probably ever seen, complete with the rain shower...loved it! Thanks Forest House for making our first, but certainly not last, trip to Cloudcroft great!
Thank you Vicki for the great review and mentioning our fairly new rain shower in the giant tub. We decided to make it a rain shower because there's not enough hot water in the world to fill it as a bathtub! So glad you enjoyed Forest House and we'll look forward to you returning. Vicki Moffatt
We all really enjoyed the stay. The property and hospitality were great. We will book here again.
Thank you so much and we're so glad you enjoyed your time there. Please do come back when you can. Vicki Moffatt
We loved it
We had a great time in Forest House. It had every amenity we needed for a long weekend in Cloudcroft. The kitchen is well stocked and has everything a vacationer would need to wants to occasionally cook. It's comfortable and cozy. Our son and daughter-in-law recommended a new mattress for the downstairs bed, otherwise, we were all very comfortable. Thanks for being good hosts. The Hart Family
Thank you so much! It sounds like you had a great stay and we can't ask more than that. You are welcome to come back again and we are looking into getting a new mattress. Thank you for the feedback, it's always helpful. Vicki Moffatt
Wonderful month retreat of beautiful weather and scenery
Stayed at “Forest House” for the month of June, 2018. Needed some quiet time to finish a book and also where I could open a window and get fresh air during the day - and, oh yes, under 100 degrees please! (Weather was perfect the entire month - mid 70’s during the day and down into the upper 40’s/ low 50’s at night. Great to wear a sweater in June! The rains started coming about mid-month - much needed and very welcome.)
House had everything I needed. I improvised a desk for writing in the Living Room but ended up using the kitchen table, much more practical. House had everything you could need - from dishwasher to microwave to full laundry to satellite TV - all good. Plus, I brought my trusty 8 pound Brussels Griffon pooch with me to guard the house against bears (alas, never saw any.) We strolled into town most afternoons - about a pleasant 10 - 12 minute walk. Or we walked up to The Lodge on the hill and enjoyed the view - again 10 - 12 minutes away. Two things to be aware - there is a flight of stairs from the garage to the first floor entry. Not a biggie except at 9000’ you do notice youre not getting quite as much oxygen as at sea level. Just go slow. Also, the garage below is exceedingly narrow for parking anything above a compact sedan - use the open air space adjoining the garage if you can’t squeeze in.
Again, thanks to Vicki and Dave Moffatt for the use of their beautiful mountain home. It’s a gem and very special indeed.
Such a beautiful review Bill, Thank you so much! We Texans know what hot means in the summer so we're really glad you cooled off in our cabin when you spent your time writing in Cloudcroft. Thank you so much and please come back again. Dave and Vicki Moffatt
Not overly impressed!
Arrival instructions were not correct nor were the TV instructions. Carport was full of weeds, the patio was not very clean, only half the light fixtures worked in the kitchen and it was just not what we expected.
We are so sorry to hear about your stay Fred. Had you gotten in touch with us we could have helped. We had just put our new combination locks on the door and changed the TV and when I went back to look at our communication, I had sent you the new information 4 days before your arrival. You must not have seen it. We apologize for the weeds in the carport, winter is winding down so we will take care of that. We could have taken care of the light fixtures as well if you would have called our maintenance managers phone number which is also in our instructions that you received on our hospitality page. Lights will occasionally go out and we have extra bulbs handy (in the kitchen drawers for your convenience) but if it was something more major, help is just a call away. Please except our apologies for your inconvenience. Vicki Moffatt
Quiet, secluded get away spot
We loved staying at Forest House during our recent spring break road trip. We spent both days in Alamogordo and White Sands National Monument. The short drive to Forest House was a welcome change to the desert and sand. The house had everything we needed and easily held our family of 6.
Thank you for the lovely review. So nice to hear that the six of you were happy staying in our cabin and that you had a wonderful visit while you were there. We hope you'll think about coming back when you can and it was a pleasure! Dave and Vicki Moffatt
