This beautiful newly remodeled, 780 sq.ft. one bedroom apartment has all new furnishings and better than hotel quality details. Private separate entrance on the ground floor. One bedroom with queen sized bed, all new bedding & new premium mattress. Apartment can accomodate up to 4 people, but it is best for single person, a couple, or a family. Free wi-fi Internet, flat panel TV with free cable, office/den in apartment with FAX/copier. Full bathroom includes washer & dryer, hair dryer, shampoo & conditioner. Fully equipped kitchen with all dishes, pots & pans, cooking utensils, basic spices, etc. Morning coffee is provided. It is conveniently located near the University of Alaska Fairbanks, (3 miles), and 8 minutes from the airport, 10 minutes from shopping.
The view from the window is a mix of spruce, birch and aspen trees. Flower gardens, including iris and lilacs, and a vegetable garden are on the property. In the Summer, we are close to the botanical garden at UAF, and in the Winter, if the auroras are out, they are very likely to be seen right over our house, with no city light pollution to dilute them.
Les & Carol Smallwood, have been residents in Fairbanks, Alaska, for over 23 years. This home you'd be staying at has been built by Les. The year purchased just indicates the year we purchased the piece of land it sits on. Located among aspen and spruce trees, the apartment suite is on the lower lever and was just remodeled. We have three dogs (all friendly and will not bother you), we love our location and privacy and hope you'll consider staying with us. We look forward to making your stay memorable.
Carol or Les Smallwood purchased this apartment in 1991
This piece of property is a total of 2.5 acres that was purchased by Les Smallwood in 1991, and then he began the process of clearing the woods and building the house you see today on it. We picked this part of town because it is near the University, doesn't have a lot of commercial business cluttering and hiding the natural beauty of the area, it is private and quiet, and it is still very close and convenient to everything in town. It is also located within the best schools' districts in the city, ensuring that our kids would go to the best public schools available.
Living with woods all around means privacy, and that you may get visits from the local moose. The air is fresh, and the water tastes good right out of the faucet, no filtering needed. If you are here in the Summer, the days are long and beautiful. In the Winter, the auroras are clear and strong, without any city light pollution.
Finally got to go to Fairbanks. Life long dream. If you get a chance to stay in Fairbanks, you must look into staying here. Les and Carol are absolutely some of the best people I have ever met! The apartment was like home. Everything was comfortable. More than comfortable. When I travel, I normally have a hard time sleeping and just being comfortable. But this place was like being in my own bed. I cannot say one bad thing about it. Way more than I had expected. There was snow and ice on the roads the whole time I was there and Les made sure the driveway and parking was maintained everyday. Les and Carol were always making sure everything was good for me. Les took me to the ice carving show one evening which I had planned to do anyway, but it was sure nice to have the company. It was like having my own personal tour guide. Then we went up to Ester Dome and he showed me the Aurora. It was not very strong that night but Les definitely showed me what to look for and I saw it several times on my own a few days after that. Simply amazing!!! Les and Carol can and will suggest any thing that you may find of interest. The drives and sights that they suggested are permanently embedded in my mind now. No place like I have ever been. Karina and Cooper, (their dogs) came to check on my everyday also. Wonderful, friendly dogs!! If you come to Fairbanks, there are 2 things that you MUST do. One is to make sure you go eat at the Loose Moose Cafe and the other is stay here with Les and Carol! You will not regret either. The month that I was there was the best time of my life. I know that had I stayed in a hotel, my stay would only have been a fraction of what it was. Les and Carol were a huge part of my stay being as great as it was and I can't thank them enough and so glad that I can now call them friends.
Wonderful apartment in a convenient location. The owners have thought of everything to make your stay as comfortable and relaxing as a night at home! Useful information was provided about the area and Carole stopped by to make sure everything was going well.
Carol and Les were very gracious hosts. They were always near for assistance but never intrusive. Upon our arrival on Easter Sunday it was they who provided us with a lovely dinner when all else was closed, showing both their generosity and character. They were both very kind and helpful with any of our needs or questions. It is for these reasons that our stay was so very relaxing. If visiting Fairbanks again we will definitely stay with Carol and Les. Two very nice Alaskans!
I'll give you the spoiler right out the gate: there is no better place to stay in Fairbanks than Carol and Les's property-- you have got to check it out. I have my own vacation rental in Las Vegas, so I understand how difficult it can be to have a wonderfully appointed, clean, efficient space for guests over time, but Les and Carol manage to go above and beyond in a way that has made me reassess some of the practiced we have implemented on my own property.
First and foremost: the communication with Carol and Les prior was wonderful. From the time of booking, to texts right before our arrival, to constant contact during our stay, every question I asked was answered completely. Carol kindly offered tips throughout our stay, including helping us find some awesome spots to get non-generic, authentic Alaska gifts and souvenirs to take home to our jealous friends.
The property itself is perfect. While the home isn't right in downtown or anything, it's a quick, easy drive from everything. For those unfamiliar (like we were): the highway system in Fairbanks is easy to follow and incredibly well maintained. Standard iPhone GPS got us everywhere without a problem, too. Back to the property: the home is set back a bit from the road, surrounded by beautiful trees. Even though you are close to everything, the property seems private and very special--- Les, Carol, and their family are lucky to call this spot their home!
To say the house is well appointed would be an understatement. It's VERY clean. There's a washer and dryer. The kitchen is fully stocked with spices, pots and pants, and everything you could possibly need. The beds are comfortable and the house is decorated tastefully. They even have shampoo and conditioner available in case you forget to bring your own. The wifi was lightening fast and the TV was awesome.
Like many of you probably reading this, our reason for visiting Fairbanks was to see the Aurora. While you can see the aurora just fine from the home (which is INCREDIBLY convenient on cold nights!), the house is also situated on the edge of town, so it's very easy to hop in the car and head out on the Parks Hwy a bit to get an even better view. We are two single women who were traveling alone (and Californians with zero snow experience, to boot!) and we felt totally safe hanging out late at night, waiting for the Aurora to make an appearance.
Definitely do not overlook this property! I hope to be back soon ♥.
My boyfriend and I visited Fairbanks for 3 nights, and were lucky enough to stay at this cabin for our vacation. Carol was very responsive before the trip, and helped me to plan our drive from Anchorage to Fairbanks. She had great tips and ideas of things to do during our stay in Fairbanks. She was even kind enough to call/txt me when the auroras began to show in the sky over the cabin.
The cabin itself was perfect. A wonderfully stocked kitchen with all of the basics, strong wi-fi, great shower, comfortable bed, and cozy couch made us feel right at home. It was also great to have a washer and dryer so that we went home with all clean clothes.
I would highly recommend staying at this cabin if you have the opportunity. I only wish we could have stayed longer.
Thank you Carol and Les!
I am a regular traveler. Best equipped apartment. Loads of Spa size bath towels. BIG washer/dryer. Gourmet kitchen with many spices, etc LEFT from other renters so you don't need to buy. Carol keeps good eye on expiration dates of things so all up to date....why waste? Fresh Crème , Butter, Coffee, Tea, Sweetener provided by Carol and Les. Queen new/ very comfortable mattress in main bedroom two huge dressers with a big closet extra blankets, bath mats, sheets, pillow cases and in twin bed location, a computer desk WITH printer for boarding passes. Bring your printer cables to hook up to printer BUT Les probably has some. Two new leather couch and love seat with large screen TV and good lighting. Carol has everything you desire for the kitchen including a pizza pan and stainless steel pots/pans. Extra dish towels, hot pads, placemats, paper towels, napkins, shampoo, laundry soap. They spared no expense. I checked out other rentals and this was most comfortable with the best features. Other rentals looked very cheap and broken down furniture and few amenities. This is luxury for Alaska. Safeway and Fred Meyer are just down town, a straight shot from apartment. This couple is so helpful and have all the brochures for all the best places, not the tourist fluff, you but the heartfelt, caring places these Alaskans know of. In Back of the house, there are some great little walks with trails clearly marked and Carol and Les marked the entrance back to their house with bright orange tags so easy to come back and good for several walks a day. Parking and entrance is easy to find and have plug for keeping car warm. Oh, Les made a great bird feeder outside your kitchen window. The activities in March are packed. I recommend JUST SHORT OF MAGIC dog sled ride early then you can drive to CHENA HOT SPRINGS and take a soak in springs, bring quarters for the lockers. Easy drive for 60 year old Californian woman. The ROADS are clear of snow and easy straight. The ICE SCULPTURE PARK is a must see once during the day and once at night. Up at the University a awesome museum and be sure to go upstairs. I missed the WALKING WITH THE RAINDEER but have already booked for next year. There is an airplane museum, a cultural center. This is the art center of Alaska. The town is easy to navigate and has everything you want to see but not the crowds. Aspen Woods is a home you will want to come back to and as Carol and Les are Gems of Fairbanks.
We are located near the University of Alaska Fairbanks, on the west side of town, only 8 minutes from the airport, 10 minutes from shopping, yet still secluded, private wooded setting. In the Summer, we are very close to the botanical garden, and the UAF Large Animal Research station with musk ox and caribou, (reindeer). In the Winter, the auroras can be seen going right over our house!
