About Carol or Les Smallwood

Les & Carol Smallwood, have been residents in Fairbanks, Alaska, for over 23 years. This home you'd be staying at has been built by Les. The year purchased just indicates the year we purchased the piece of land it sits on. Located among aspen and spruce trees, the apartment suite is on the lower lever and was just remodeled. We have three dogs (all friendly and will not bother you), we love our location and privacy and hope you'll consider staying with us. We look forward to making your stay memorable.

Carol or Les Smallwood purchased this apartment in 1991

Why Carol or Les Smallwood chose Alaska

This piece of property is a total of 2.5 acres that was purchased by Les Smallwood in 1991, and then he began the process of clearing the woods and building the house you see today on it. We picked this part of town because it is near the University, doesn't have a lot of commercial business cluttering and hiding the natural beauty of the area, it is private and quiet, and it is still very close and convenient to everything in town. It is also located within the best schools' districts in the city, ensuring that our kids would go to the best public schools available.

What makes this apartment unique

Living with woods all around means privacy, and that you may get visits from the local moose. The air is fresh, and the water tastes good right out of the faucet, no filtering needed. If you are here in the Summer, the days are long and beautiful. In the Winter, the auroras are clear and strong, without any city light pollution.

Best time of my life!

  • 5 of 5

Finally got to go to Fairbanks. Life long dream. If you get a chance to stay in Fairbanks, you must look into staying here. Les and Carol are absolutely some of the best people I have ever met! The apartment was like home. Everything was comfortable. More than comfortable. When I travel, I normally have a hard time sleeping and just being comfortable. But this place was like being in my own bed. I cannot say one bad thing about it. Way more than I had expected. There was snow and ice on the roads the whole time I was there and Les made sure the driveway and parking was maintained everyday. Les and Carol were always making sure everything was good for me. Les took me to the ice carving show one evening which I had planned to do anyway, but it was sure nice to have the company. It was like having my own personal tour guide. Then we went up to Ester Dome and he showed me the Aurora. It was not very strong that night but Les definitely showed me what to look for and I saw it several times on my own a few days after that. Simply amazing!!! Les and Carol can and will suggest any thing that you may find of interest. The drives and sights that they suggested are permanently embedded in my mind now. No place like I have ever been. Karina and Cooper, (their dogs) came to check on my everyday also. Wonderful, friendly dogs!! If you come to Fairbanks, there are 2 things that you MUST do. One is to make sure you go eat at the Loose Moose Cafe and the other is stay here with Les and Carol! You will not regret either. The month that I was there was the best time of my life. I know that had I stayed in a hotel, my stay would only have been a fraction of what it was. Les and Carol were a huge part of my stay being as great as it was and I can't thank them enough and so glad that I can now call them friends.

Owner's Response: David, Thank you so much for the wonderful write-up! We definitely do call you our friend, and hope you can come back up here again, this time in the summer. Then we can show you a whole bunch of other great things to see in the Fairbanks area. We were so happy to make your stay a pleasure, that's how we think of Alaska, a little bit of magic, where you can find some of the wonder you had when you were young. A place to capture some of that again!Keep in touch with us!

Second stay and just as wonderful as first time.

  • 5 of 5

I had submitted a review and will submit another one. The location of the property is an easy wide road about 10 minutes from the airport. The roads are plowed regularly and Les keeps the road clear and has a plug for your rental car to keep it from freezing at night. The northern lights come overhead or just at the end of the road to the north. Every pamphlet that is in Fairbanks, Carol has put in the rental. The rental has a printer for your boarding passes, unheard of at other rentals, large screen tv with easy instructions, huge washer and dryer, upscale cooking equipment. Les and Carol are nature lovers and provide for the wild animals you can see right out the kitchen window. Carol or les are only a Text away. There is a wonderful trail out past the greenhouse that takes you on a wonderful walk with clear signs back. Downtown is only a few minutes drive and easy to locate shopping. There is a bar-b-que at your disposal. They can offer you suggestions and every thing they suggested was informative and interesting. I felt secure and safe when I visited with just my girlfriend and then when I came to enjoy the apartment again this year with my husband it was spotless. The new mattress, bedding, loads of towels and even extra jackets for the cold...WHO does that? The Smallwoods are personable and professional and are committed to you enjoying your stay. I travel all over the world and stay in many VRBO's and have never experienced such "customer service" as with this pair. I am going to get my flight in order and stay next year also. You will be pleased with this location and the high standards they provide. I hope my first review had made it through but I do not mind you contacting me if you would like: Lerickson299 and then it would be the little @ you would then add Hotmail and then a period (.) ending with a com.

Owner's Response: Linda, Thanks again for your super wonderful and detailed review! Just let us know when you would like your dates to be, and I will put your reservation on the calendar. It would be great to host you and your family or friends again! March is a great time because of the dog sledding, World Ice Art, and aurora activity. But another time to consider is Fall, we have had lots of aurora activity in late September, and October, and it is not as cold yet then, Although there may not be as many tourist activities at that time, you can always wine and dine, and if the dates coincide with the first Friday of the month, you could go on the art tour of galleries, it is an event we call "First Friday" and happens throughout the year. Just an idea. Enjoy your Spring and Summer! Carol & Les

second timer renting this apartment and still the best deal in fairbanks. so close to everything

  • 5 of 5

I stayed 5 days in 2016 and before I left, I begged to be put on the books for 2017. I travel about 3 months during the year as I am retired. I can go anywhere I want, financially and always look for 4 star minimum. This is premium location, easy drive from airport, road private and plowed for easy access. Apartment has leather furniture and thick luxurious comforters and New mattress. windows look out on bird feeders, greenhouse, and lovely trail you can walk morning and night. The trail is well marked, safe, quiet and plowed by community living there. Lots of thick towels and shampoo/conditioner/soaps/laundry soap/dish soap supplied. Cooking pans are thick stainless steel, Washing/dryer provided along with computer set up and a Printer to print your boarding passes...unheard of at any other rental I have been to. Carol makes it a point not to intrude but if you ask, since she is an artist, she can direct you to the best places for good quality local art work. Every suggestion we took from her was well thought out and superb. Maps and brochures are provided and the apartment is so conveniently located, you can even come back for lunch and then take off again. You can use the bar-b-que on the same deck as the greenhouse.

There are plug ins for your car and the open kitchen/livingroom offers great view of brand new HUGE tv with clear directions on how to navigate the controls. The internet is such a great connection and Les is a computer tech. He came downstairs and figured out our computer to his connections. This couple is dedicated to running this apartment efficiently and hopefully is building another apartment so I can bring more people. The extra computer room has a twin bed and there is an additional mattress so you could actually have 5 comfortably. The apartment is all new so it is spotless and has heated baseboards so quiet at night. Lots of hot water available and huge frig and fully equipped kitchen with high quality pots and pans so that you can keep it all very clean. There is extra of everything, sheets, towels, paper towels. Go to apartment first, then go shopping because you will find loads of spices (she takes care to clean out expired food stuffs left by others) but the apartment is rented quite often so we all leave interesting food treats and Carol makes sure it is all up to date. She has taken the time to put into the apartment what 4 star hotels do and makes it so luxurious.

this is a fantastic value

Owner's Response: Wow, Linda, that was a beautiful review and we appreciate it very much! Thank you so much for choosing us again, and this time we met your husband. Both of you and your friends are welcome anytime, I'll let you know when the larger apartment is ready, and just let me know what dates you want and we'll pencil you in. So glad you were able to see the auroras this time! Thanks, you are great guests! Carol & Les

Great stay in Fairbanks

  • 5 of 5

This was a great place to enjoy winter in Fairbanks. Close to all yet tucked away on a nice quiet street. Apartment had everything and more than you would need. Our hosts were very helpful with information and suggestions. Lots of clouds and snow for most of our stay but we were happy that the sky cleared and we saw the northern lights on our last night.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for your kind review! We're glad you were able to see the auororas at least one night of your stay when the weather finally cooperated. Another time of year to try is the Fall, by mid-September thru November we often get excellent auroras, and by then it is dark enough to see them at a reasonable time of night, not having to wait until the wee hours of the morning. In addition, there seems to be less precipitation, and many clear nights, as well as the fact that its not sub-zero temperatures yet, like it is as you get further into Winter. Thanks again for choosing us, have a wonderful Spring! Carol & Les

Perfect stay in Fairbanks

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely perfect in every way... location, comfort, convenience, hospitality. Les and Carol are great hosts who go out of their way to make sure you have everything you need. The property is in an ideal location near the University, just outside of town... very private. Every detail has been accounted for... plug-in for your car, parking... every amenity you could think of... TV, full kitchen, laundry, towels, etc. This is probably the best kept secret in Fairbanks... much nicer than any hotel.

We are located near the University of Alaska Fairbanks, on the west side of town, only 8 minutes from the airport, 10 minutes from shopping, yet still secluded, private wooded setting. In the Summer, we are very close to the botanical garden, and the UAF Large Animal Research station with musk ox and caribou, (reindeer). In the Winter, the auroras can be seen going right over our house!
