About the property

A Private Woods, Close to Town, Full kitchen, Luxurious & Spacious !

View the aurora video that my husband took of fantastic auroras right over the house in September! To access it, Click thru the pictures on this photo album using the arrows on the screen to the right. It is the 3rd one in. Then click on the arrow in the middle of the screen to play it. It shows the auroras Raging over our house! This is a common occurrence when the aurora activity is high. Our place is more than just the apartment, it is the location, and the beautiful surroundings in the grounds around it. Flower gardens, a lawn with ornamental shrubs and trees, a small deck and grill, woods all around the perimeter for privacy, a walking or running trail right from the back of the property, a small greenhouse to sit in for a peaceful cup of tea. This beautiful 800 sq.ft. one bedroom apartment has all new furnishings and is comparable to a private hotel suite, but better. There are many EXTRAS that are included such as FREE wi-fi and cable TV, laundry, fully equipped kitchen, extra Winter gear- parkas, boots & gloves for guests' use, fresh garden herbs for your use, an outside grill, that if you figure that into your cost elsewhere, it is actually less expensive to stay here. (Winter gear would cost up to $250 + if you bought it yourself) Private separate entrance on the ground floor. One bedroom with queen sized bed, all new bedding & new premium mattress. Also another smaller room with a twin sized bed, in addition two very comfortable airbeds if needed. Apartment can accomodate up to 4 people,. Free wi-fi Internet, flat panel TV with free cable, office/den in apartment with FAX/copier. Full bathroom includes washer & dryer, hair dryer, shampoo & conditioner. Fully equipped kitchen with all dishes, pots & pans, cooking utensils, basic spices, etc. Morning coffee and tea is provided. There is an outside grill on a small deck near the greenhouse for your use. There is a walking or running or biking trail, right from the back of the property onto the trail. Our place is conveniently located near the University of Alaska Fairbanks, (3 miles), and 8 minutes from the airport, 8 minutes from shopping. The rental is the entire ground floor, of almost 800 sq ft, we live up above in the upper two floors so that we are available to make sure all your needs are met.

The view from the window is a mix of spruce, birch and aspen trees. Flower gardens, including iris and lilacs, and an herb garden and greenhouse are on the property. In the Summer, we are close to the botanical garden at UAF, and in the Winter, if the auroras are out, they are very likely to be seen right over our house, with no city light pollution to dilute them. For extended stay, we can talk about a Monthly rate. Generally for anything over a month, we need to get references from your current landlord or other references. Have a great journey!

About Carol or Les Smallwood

Les & Carol Smallwood, have been residents in Fairbanks, Alaska, for over 28 years. This home you'd be staying at has been built by Les. The year purchased just indicates the year we purchased the piece of land it sits on. Located among aspen and spruce trees, the apartment suite is on the lower lever and was just remodeled. We have two dogs (all friendly and will not bother you), we love our location and privacy and hope you'll consider staying with us. We look forward to making your stay memorable.

Carol or Les Smallwood purchased this apartment in 1991

Why Carol or Les Smallwood chose Fairbanks

Our place is Not located in Ester, it is located only 3 miles from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, (UAF) on the West side of town in Fairbanks. This property is a total of 2.5 acres that was purchased by Les Smallwood in 1991, and then he began the process of clearing the woods and building the house you see today on it. We picked this part of town because it is near the University, doesn't have a lot of commercial business cluttering and hiding the natural beauty of the area, it is private and quiet, and it is still very close and convenient to everything in town. It is also located within the best schools' districts in the city, ensuring that our kids would go to the best public schools available.

What makes this apartment unique

Living with woods all around means privacy, and that you may get visits from the local moose. The air is fresh, and the water tastes good right out of the faucet, no filtering needed. If you are here in the Summer, the days are long and beautiful. In the Winter, the auroras are clear and strong, without any city light pollution.

VIDEO of the AURORAS during an exceptional evening on Sept 28, 2017, by my husband, Les Smallwood, looking towards the house, RIGHT OVER THE VRBO. Of course, the auroras raged way longer than the short video represented here. It is typical when there is a night of high activity, on clear nights that the auroras can be seen right outside the door, if you just walk out and look up. Sometimes you have to look North, but most of the time, they arc right over the house. Enjoy this short video.

Cozy & Well Equipped!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at the Aspen Woods rental! The owners, Carol and Les, made sure we had everything needed for a great stay - including extra boots, parkas and gloves for our chilly aurora-seeking nights. Would definitely recommend it to others and would gladly book again on our next trip to Fairbanks!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your review of our place! We really enjoyed meeting you both and your local friend here, as well! We were happy to provide a few extras to make your stay more comfortable! It's fantastic that you saw the auroras, had a bunch of fun local day trips, and we really enjoyed dining with you all on one evening. Please stay with us again, whenever you are in Fairbanks! Beautiful Property, Lovely Hosts!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at Aspen Woods! The setting is secluded and private, yet the sites of Fairbanks are easily accessible. They are fairly close to the airport, and they were very accommodating to our middle of the night arrival. We never got to meet Les, but Carol was very gracious and welcoming.

The unit has a very well-equipped kitchen, and the washer and dryer were a big help. It was great having coffee, bagels and some "fixins" available especially after that late arrival. Very comfy bed, room-darkening shades. Our only regret is that we were on a working vacation to help our son and his family, who recently moved to Fairbanks, fix up their house so we really didn't have time to explore the grounds of the property. Highly recommend this unit. We would like to return in the winter to see the Auroras and would stay here again. Thanks, Carol!

Owner's Response: Thank you very much Kathryn, for the great review! We enjoyed hosting you two, and yes, we were wishing your visit was more of a vacation for you instead of a working one, but we're glad you had a comfortable stay at our place! Please come back and stay with us whenever you are in Fairbanks again! Carol & Les

Fairbanks Basement Apartment

  • 3 of 5

The apartment is comfortable. Keep in mind you are staying in a basement and the owner is onsite. The apartment faces the backyard garden owner does tend the garden so pull the blinds. Nice setting nice folks

Owner's Response: Lesley, I am very disappointed with your review. First of all, you are falsely representing our place with the title you used on your review. This is a ground floor apartment, the first floor of a 3 story house, NOT a basement. It is easy to access because there aren't any stairs to climb. It is a very luxurious & spacious 800 sq ft apartment with beautiful furnishings and detail. There are 2 Huge windows in the front 6' x 4' and they do have privacy shades on them. In addition, there's a full size kitchen window with shades that looks out on a bird feeder which has regular other wildlife, including moose in the Spring or Fall that visits. The bedroom has a full sized window with shades to keep out all the sun, that looks out on other flowers. Just check out the photos we have here of all the rooms and some of the flower gardens. Also you can view a video of the auroras in the photos section, which took place, right over the house. In addition, I spent a few extra hours of my time to research the different areas you were visiting before you got up to Fairbanks, and sent you a lot of specific and helpful information, and you even commented when you arrived that the scenery was spectacular, on the Denali Highway. That was time I gave for free, to make your journey even more special. I'm a bit surprised that you took off 2 stars simply because you saw me a couple times while I was tending the flower baskets in front. It's very dry up here, I'm not sure how they would survive if they weren't cared for, it is a costly investment. I'm just doing what any other groundskeeper would do at any decent hotel, as quickly as possible, usually before anyone wakes up. I hope every other traveler here enjoys the beauty of our property, and our efforts to make your stay as wonderful as possible, just like all our past guests. That's why we have 63 -- 5 star reviews. Any prospective travelers should be reading those.

Great property!!

  • 5 of 5

The rental was all it was advertised to be and more. Clean, spacious, and stocked with the basic amenities. It is easy to get to, and close to everything. The owners are longtime residents and provided insider info about the area, places to go, and things to do. They made us feel right "at home". We would recommend this unit to anyone visiting the Fairbanks area.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much Craig & Eva, we enjoyed having you stay here as your home base for your family activities and sight-seeing! We try to make sure we have all the extras needed for travelers' comfort, things you can't fit in your suitcase, but wish you had, like an umbrella, for example. We always want everyone to have a good time while they are here in Fairbanks, and as soon as you get to Alaska, so we provide tips for any excursions travelers take while they are here. Thanks for staying with us, you're welcome any time you return to Fairbanks! -Carol & Les

We are located near the University of Alaska Fairbanks, on the west side of town, only 8 minutes from the airport, 10 minutes from shopping, yet still secluded, private wooded setting. In the Summer, we are very close to the botanical garden, and the UAF Large Animal Research station with musk ox and caribou, (reindeer). In the Winter, the auroras can be seen going right over our house!
