About Dr. Gillian Hettinger
English professor and husband fell in love with this idyllic house, not least because of the lake, which is amazing. Perfect in all seasons, and something to do all year long. We love the wildlife and drifting gently in the canoe across the private lake--wonderful winter views across private lake, great fishing in the summertime. The land across the road and across the lake is all preserved so your views are spectacular. Great local restaurants and, of course, everything the Berkshires has to offer. You'll be delighted with this rare find and come back again and again. You'll come for the culture--the music, theater, dance--and you'll stay for tranquil hours reading a favorite book on the porch, or beginning to write your novel.

Another great time at Elterwater
My family and I spent our second New Year’s in a row at this special place. Gillian’s cottage is a magical spot. No snow this year but 3 beautiful hikes very close by and one amazing day trip to Mass MoCA. Hoping to return soon. Thank you Gillian!
We absolutely love these guests and hope they make “Elterwater” a New Year’s tradition. The house was left absolutely immaculate—such considerate guests and a pleasure to rent to.
Had a lovely weekend at this property. Had every comfort needed in a beautiful and peaceful setting. I had bad luck weather wise with some cool rainy days but even still the house was a wonderful place to unwind, warm up and relax. Gillian was amazing with her responses and desire to make it a comfortable weekend for me. Would definitely recommend this property to others. Thanks again!
Such a great, warm and appreciative guest, just the kind of person to appreciate the quirky charm of this 50-ish house. The home was left immaculate—so generous. Thank you!
October 2018 getaway
We were a group of friends from the Boston area looking to explore western Massachusetts. The house was very comfortable and spacious, offering plenty of privacy as well as large common areas. The view over the lake was spectacular and the multiple bald eagle sitings were a huge bonus. We were conveniently located to many of the sights we planned on our itinerary as well as shopping and restaurants. The house offered everything we needed to make a great base for our touring vacation. Gillian was accommodating and very easy to deal with. We would love to stay at Elterwater again.
What a wonderfully generous review. These were the kind of guests we love to have stay at “Elterwater” because they were so interested and appreciative. Also, the house was left absolutely spotless which was very much appreciated. Lovely guests—and we do hope they come back. Gillian
Beautiful Surroundings & Peaceful
We love our stay at this property & the location is in a very quiet setting which makes it relaxing. The foliage view with the lake from the Screened In back porch is serene & peaceful. The place has everything we need. There were a few minor issues but Dr. Gillian was very helpful. We really like the area. We wish we booked it longer but we will try to visit again.
Lovely guests who reveled in all the Berkshires has to offer. The house was left immaculate which was very much appreciated. Do hope they’ll return.
Tranquil Lake House
The house was located on a quiet street and affords a lot of privacy. The owners provided all the essential items for a comfortable stay. In addition, the owners are easily accessible and response time is great. We enjoyed our stay very much.
p.s. They dropped off a bag with veggies from their garden which was much appreciated.
Little Bit of Heaven
The accommodations were excellent, exactly as depicted. The owner was extremely helpful with any requests and provided wonderful and timely information on many of the events from which to choose in the Berkshires. A pleasure to experience! Well worth a return visit!
What a warm and generous response. Absolutely delightful guests.
Incredible wealth of things to do all year round--all the cultural activities of the Berkshires within easy reach. Great hiking all year, especially close-by Appalachian Trail and Mount Washington Reservation. In summer, close to Sheffield's Berkshire Choral Festival. Boston Symphony Orchestra, Tanglewood, Shakespeare and Company, Berkshire Theater Company, Jacob's Pillow. Near to Berkshire School, too, to visit your boarding school students. We're five miles south of Great Barrington in Sheffield so you avoid the tourist crush--yet really close to everything--just a mile off Route 7. 5 miles north of Connecticut, Litchfield County and Infinity Hall. You have a prime lakefront location on a private lake with remarkable serenity. Great dining all around, including local Guido's Marketplace Cafe smack on Main Street, plus Stage Coach Inn. Beautiful Sheffield is also the site of historic Shay's Rebellion, home of Mumbet, early Civil Rights figure and site of first UFO abduction! Great hiking-Mount Everett and Mount Washington--plus local covered bridge. Wonderful local wildlife on your doorstep with bald eagle, swans, blue herons. Plus, because of excellent location, you're also close (5 miles) to attractions south in Connecticut such as Music Mountain in Norfolk, Lime Rock for racing and Litchfield--perfect little New England towns, loaded with history. The quintessential New England experience and you'll be delighted you found it. (And ask about local UFO sighting, attested to by Governor of Massachusetts) Expanded cable with CNN, TNT, PBS, Discovery Channel, ESPN. Wi-fi and good cell reception, somewhat rare in the Berkshires.
