Grand Bear Resort Luxury Cabin

  • 5 of 5

And yes ! It proved to be a luxurious , clean , spacious accommodation for our family of seven. It was a windy blustery day for hiking . Our g-kids at 7, 8 and 10 absolutely never tired of the indoor water park and the arcade! That was all that was open on the day we were there . We had a wedding at the Starved Rock Resort and the light hikes to view Starved Rocks was something no one should miss! The only down side was the lack of bar soap and limited cookware to choose from. I was glad I brought frozen pancakes and bacon for breakfast and Lou Malnatti's Pizza from home. The Starved Rock Lodge in the park has very reasonable options to choose from and the buffet was wonderful - half price for kids under 10 - only $5.00 each - such a bargain! I would highly recommend staying here - it was just as described truly luxurious!

Rental cabin feel; maintenance required; best for >8 people

  • 3 of 5

We stayed for our family vacation (12 people) and the cabin is nice looking; it is spacious and just as the pictures portray.

Basic maintenance is required: the upstairs chest drawer fell out on my dad's foot, there is a mouse living in the kitchen, there is no smoke detector in the downstairs bedroom, the fridge door wouldn't shut, the curtain rod in the downstairs shower was bent. (We reported all of these things, but the maintenance person wanted to wait until we had vacated, so I cannot be sure if they were addressed.)

There is a "strict" H.O.A. no grill policy, but the two porches next to ours had permanent-looking grills complete with grill covers. (This is just annoying I suppose; we certainly would have loved to grill out.)

The kitchen is missing necessary items to be able to make meals. There are no hot pads or baking trays/cookie sheets, for example.

Although the cabin is advertised for 18 people, it is better suited to 8 or so. There are two couches and three chairs in the entire living area (enough seating for 9). There are 3 chairs for outdoors. The dinner seating is for 11 (8 at the table and behind it, 3 more at the bar). 12 of us stayed for 5 days and 2 dishwasher soap tabs were left. (12 people means we ran the dishwasher every day. We had to buy our own soap.) There is one towel per person; if you want to do laundry on your vacation, there are laundry facilities downstairs. There are 2 extra pillows, but no extra blankets available. There are beds for 12; the other six must sleep two to a pull-out sofa (two in the living room and one in the master bedroom).

If you are looking for a hotel type cabin, this is exactly what you would expect. If you want to stay in a place you can cook and sit together to talk, this rental isn't it. After this experience, it is my preference to stay at cabin homes rented out; they have a homey feel and are fully stocked with necessary items for a large family experience.

We did receive our deposit refund promptly (within a week).

This experience was ok, but we will not stay at the Grand Bear Resort (definitely not a) Luxury Cabin again.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review! We would just like to address a few important points: 1. You are the first guest who reported issues of a mouse. Cleanliness of the cabin (we do two rigorous checks of the cabin after every guest’s stay) and the comfort/safety of our guests are our utmost priority. We immediately asked if this was an emergency situation, and were willing to take care of the issue straightway. As agreed by you, we ultimately decided it would be best to perform pest control after you checked out so that you and your family wouldn’t be disturbed. To be clear, we performed pest control and installed a permanent (chemical-free) pest repeller after your departure. 2. Our vacation cabin is located in a wooded area, and fire hazards are a major concern. As per home owner association rules, grills are not allowed and subject to hefty fines. We cannot control how our neighbors and guests may react to this requirement, but it is our responsibility to keep our guests safe. 3. We provide a variety of kitchen utensils and cookware for our guests. Knowing that every guest may have different needs from time to time, we always encourage our guests to check with us before arriving so that you can be sure what additional items you may need to bring along. In the same vein, should you need any extra supplies, simply request them during your stay and we would be more than happy to accommodate. We do apologize that the number of dishwasher soap tabs was inadequate and will be more cognizant of this in the future. 4. Your description of the number of furniture pieces is inaccurate. To be clear, we advertise this cabin is comfortable for 12 people, but can physically accommodate 18 people, if necessary. It was never our intentions to be misleading, and it is up to our guests to decide if they would like to stay given the constraints of the living space. Likewise, it is our job to make sure that guests are as comfortable as possible given the constraints of the space, and we would be happy to make any accommodations and address any concerns prior to your booking and/or stay. We regret that you didn’t find comfort during your visit. Thank you again.

Great place for family get away

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our time in this cabin. It was spacious, VERY clean and everything was in top order when we arrived. Beds were comfy, too. Only reason I did not rate 5 stars was lack of oven dishes for cooking, dull knives and limited towels. Towels were in nice condition, but no floor towels, only 2 kitchen towels and a stinky sponge.

Great place for a great value!

This place was great for our family reunion. It had a lot of room and with the 4 bathrooms and full kitchen it made it nice for all of us! We would definitely stay again.
