Mushrooms and a Cat: A short novel
Upon arriving to this property the lawn looked as if it had not been maintained for a few months. Once entering inside the AC did not work and we were forced to stay in an 80-90 degree home in the middle of july. The listing also originally said 3 beds sleeps 8 and there was one bed and a musty mold smelling basement that was uninhabitable for more than 10 minutes unless you would like to have a headache and feel sick for the duration of your stay (assuming water damage). Leaving us to have to have to go buy two air mattresses to sleep our party. We also had the pleasure of watching the owners cat and feeding it morning and night (which we were unaware of before). 3 of the girls are allergic to cats and had reactions causing them to have to ice their eyes and go get medication. No toilet paper, paper towels, sheets or bath towels were provided. There was a mushroom growing out of the living room floor. The place was definitely not clean and 100% looks better after we cleaned before departure. The couch also has a huge whole which is covered by a blanket, but take a peek its quite a sight. The toilet also stopped flushing randomly on the second day. Which is not surprising as the toilet had black stuff all over the toilet bowl and looked pretty old. To the owner this seemed to be a thing WE BROKE although when we looked under the head it was rusted and showed signs of prior damage. She took half of our security deposit and refused to admit her toilet was just old and broken in need of going to the trash. Customer service assured us we would be getting our full security deposit back as we had to deal with all of these problems but we have yet to see the other half due to this unprofessional owner. All in all go to the shore, but would not recommend this place in the slightest.
Not a Great Experience
Upon arrival at our designated time, we found that there was a man in the garage fixing a car. He claimed to be the owners son and that he would be on his way shortly. He was blocking the driveway, so we couldn’t park our cars. He entered the house through the garage at one point with no notice. Despite our efforts to ask him to leave, this situation continued on for 8 hours. By 11 pm we were rightfully frustrated, he ignored our requests and continued working in the garage, loudly revving the engines on his cars. At one point he told someone he was on the phone with that we were kicking him out of his own house. To be clear, yes, we wanted him to leave, and no, we were kicking him out of our house because legally the home was ours for the duration of the rental period. All we wanted to do was go to sleep, but regardless of our asking him to leave he lingered and didn’t leave until very late.
When we called and texted the owner in an attempt to remedy this situation she did not respond. It is irresponsible to not communicate with us that your son would be there and not respond to us when we inquire about the situation.
Aside from the man, the house was generally fine, but certainly not an accurate representation of the online listing. The couch has a giant tear in it, so large that you can see straight through it. The hole is covered by a blanket, as if the owner expected us not to move the blanket at any point during our stay. If your personal solution to a destroyed couch is to cover it with a blanket, that’s fine, but it’s not appropriate for a home that you are renting to others.
The basement has a strong mildew-esque scent, as if there is unresolved water damage lurking. It wouldn’t have been an issue had one of the two bedrooms and a pull out couch not been in the basement; let me assure you that the smell is anything but pleasant. We also awoke in the middle of the night extremely hot - the thermostat read 80 degrees, but there were no directions on how to control the AC or the temperature so we were forced to spend much of our visit in stifling heat.
The general cleanliness of the house was fine, but upon our arrival we realized that the recycling bin was full of smelly bottles. The garbage disposal is also broken, which was not labeled.
All in all, the location of the home is good and if you don’t need much more than a bed to sleep on you’ll have that. But if you’re looking for a comfortable stay, look elsewhere.
Not what I was expecting
We arrived to frances’ house to find old food in the fridge and a musty and smokey smell in the living room. The couch was completely torn apart with a blanket covering it. It’s advertised as a three bedroom but it’s truly a one bedroom. The basement is huge but has an awful toxic smell, incapable to sleep in, and is covered in cobwebs. The landscaping is overgrown with weeds. When we left we vacuumed, cleaned, and took out the garbage. After all of this she charged us $200 from the security deposit for false claims of broken picture frames and smoke in the house. There’s absolutely no cleaning fee because it seemed like the house wasn’t cleaned for months. Such a disappointment.
When I walked into my home to do my inspection, there was so much smoke and a distinct odor of marajuana, which is illegal in N.J. In my bathroom there was a picture frame broken. On my dining table the sea shell vase was cracked. I was very disappointed and rightfully so.
Absolutely beautiful house and neighborhood!!
I was very happy with the house. Very spacious, clean and well kept. Close to everything including downtown Spring Lake. So easy to relax and enjoy my vacation. Would absolutely go back again year after year:)
Pam Pilla was a wonderful and pleasant guest! She took excellent care of my house and left it in immaculate condition. Pam was so gracious to leave me a thank you gift to express her gratitude! Would love to have her come back in the future!
Nice spot and well maintained house
House fit all criteria and worked out for a nice weekend down the shore
Lots of room but much more potential
We enjoyed our stay in Spring Lake. The house is in a good location. Not walking distance from the beach but an easy drive as well as easy access to Rte 35 and most necessities. In some ways, the pictures do not do the home justice. The entry level has a large, spacious living and dining area. The kitchen is also spacious but with a strange layout that doesn't make it easy to use. Both bedrooms on this floor are also good size with plenty of closet space. The basement bedroom is enormous and COULD be a great room for all of the kids to sleep or play but is only set up with one queen bed and a night stand.
As one of the other reviews described, the house is neat but not the cleanest we've stayed in. There is a lot of dust on the A/C vents, the couches are not in great shape and the downstairs bedroom is very musty despite the two dehumidifiers. The back patio area is overgrown with weeds and the front yard is overgrown with ivy. Other challenges include a limited supply of cookware and only one bathroom (it does have a double vanity).
All-in-all, there is a lot of space but just average in cleanliness and usefulness of that space. The house has a lot of potential if given some TLC.
Plenty of gulf courses and fine restaurants nearby.
