'Fantastic location, beautiful views, superbly presented, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here.' (Visitor comment.)
Bedlinen, towels, full SKY TV package, phone, broadband - no charge. Available to rent from 28 March to 1st November.
Set in one of the most dramatically beautiful parts of the Lake District, this ‘get away from it all’ cottage offers superb comfort and style, total peace and quiet, fantastic walking AND plenty to see and do nearby.
Full of pictures, games and books, with a big farmhouse kitchen at its heart, the views from every window will take your breath away. The cottage looks out on Scafell, England’s highest mountain, and you can walk from the cottage to Devoke Water, a mysterious mountain lake. Relax by a roaring log fire with a good book or Sky TV, or sit outside and drink in the stunning mountain views. You're a world away from tourists and crowds, yet the Lake District’s favourite destinations are all within easy reach.
High Ground Cottage is a pet-friendly cottage with stunning mountain views and is actually our home over the winter. That's why it isn't possible to book it in winter months - except for the February half-term when we go away ourselves.
That means that it's a warm, characterful home - not just a soulless holiday cottage - full of great books, comfy furniture, a big TV with full Sky package, and a lovely atmosphere. You will relax completely!. The situation is away-from-it-all and It's perfect for romantic breaks and destressing. Terrific mountain-biking, fishing and other sports in the area mean you be active if you want to, in a really inspiring way.
If you've got a young family, there's loads for them to do in the area - and with an enclosed garden and no traffic anywhere near, it's a lot more relaxing for you!
A roomy property for a mixed age group from 6 months to over 60 + dog.
The cottage had all the facilities we required as per the description.
Close to Eskdale for walks, railway, Muncaster Castle, Wastwater and Hardknott roman fort.
Best pub garden for kids - The Bower House Inn.
Best food Hardknott cafe.
Had a great family catch up in High Ground Cottage which was a very comfortable house for 10 adults and 3 dogs. Great space and amazing views where we sat around the kitchen table and log fires reminiscing, playing games and recovering from walking up Scafell Pike in the Snow. The house catered for all our needs in the sun, snow, wind and rain. We had a wonderful stay and didn't want to leave.
We don’t normally bother to comment on the holiday cottages but simply had to for this one!! Ran out of stars!!!
We were all (8) really impressed with this absolutely brilliant holiday cottage. What a location - no traffic and perfect peace. There are breathtaking views from the rooms out over the valley up to Scafell. We sat in the garden and just looked!! High Ground is very well furnished and equipped - we didn’t run out of crockery/cutlery during the whole stay.
There’s a huge collection of library books complete with a children’s section. There were even children’s toys to the delight of our grandchildren. The bedrooms were light and airy with comfy beds and plenty of storage. With 3 bathrooms/shower/loos there were no queues- very useful with the grandchildren!! The garden was a safe place for the children to play in.
We didn’t watch much TV but Sky TV/DVD was available and with wifi we could also check out emails each day.
We visited the owls and herons at Muncaster Castle with its Gardens and the L’il Ratty single gauge steam railway from Eskdale to Ravenglass. Both were only a short drive. We didn’t use the car much as there were so many local walks to do – high ground, water falls and Devoke water.
By the way the local Tesco were brilliant and delivered the groceries to us with no problem.
Even mundane accounts/payments couldn't have been easier with Candy organising everything
Thank you so much for a truly memorable holiday

We can highly recommend this property.
Sited in a large enclosed garden, children and dogs can romp to their hearts content whilst adults can imbibe the glorious view towards Scafell,Bowfell,Crinkle Crags etc.
There are pleasant walks from the house itself as well as the delights of Ennerdale,Wasdale etc and for less energetic folks, there is Muncaster Castle and gardens,St Bees beach and Eskdale railway nearby, to name a few.
The accommodation in the house was ample for the 10 of us and all household items, furnishings, bedding etc were clean, well thought out and more than ample.
The house was easy to run and there was a useful "directory" for guests but this did not contain a long list of "donts".
Our party included people from 18 months to 73 and we were all very comfortable and hope to return in the very near future!
We wanted somewhere special to celebrate my mum's 65th birthday and both mum and dads 45th wedding anniversary..(they got married on her birthday so dad would never forget their anniversary!!) With spectacular views and every possible amenity we required, we felt very proud of ourselves for locating such a wonderful place. The property was very clean and well maintained, the kitchen well stocked with pots and pans and crockery and cutlery. This dishwasher was a bonus. We had a 10 month old in our party and he was so happy with his box of toys and both hi-chair and cot provided were excellent quality. The large kitchen table and ample chairs meant we could all sit round having a cheeky glass of wine whilst I cooked!! Also there was ample hot water for showers.
Candy, the owner communicated well and we were provided with numbers should we need to contact them during our stay. We met the local hare.. He sat in the garden munching grass. It must have been particularly tasty in High Grounds garden.. The local shop at Eskdale stocked everything and has a good range of books of local walks.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.. That view changed by the minute and we all enjoyed it so much. Candy thanks it was a birthday celebration to remember.
The holiday cottage was exactly what we had hoped for: quiet, away from it all yet not too far by car from excellent walking (Harter Fell, Scafell Pike etc ...). The cottage was very large, bright & airy with plenty of space for the family of 5 + 2 grandparents. It was in very good condition, immaculate and well stocked with towels, toilet rolls etc ..... Beautiful views from all rooms (even bathrooms!) made this a wonderful location. The large dinning table in the kitchen was excellent for family meals and the 2 downstairs sitting rooms were useful as a play room and a more 'grown up' room. Outside there were lots of birds, sheep over the fence and lots of wild flowers to pick and press (until the grass got cut - sensible but the children preferred wading through the meadow). Although the cottage is remote if you bring most things with you it is easy to keep going with essentials from the excellent store in Eskdale Green. We also had a lovely leisurely walk to Stanley Ghyll Force combined with a trip on the Ratty train. I would also recommend The Brook House Inn in Boot for excellent food for adults and a good children's menu. All in all a wonderful holiday in probably one of the best holiday cottages we have rented, but we do love to stay in the middle of nowhere!
High Ground Cottage is a five minute drive from Ulpha Post Office and Stores. Eskdale Post Office/Stores and George IV pub are 10 minutes drive. Broughton-in-Furness is a lovely little market town just 15 minutes drive away which has terrific food shops selling local produce as well as good food pubs and cafes. St Bees vast sandy beach and beach café and Silecroft beach are both within easy reach. Muncaster Castle with its Owl Sanctuary and Gardens are nearby as is the L’il Ratty single gauge steam railway from Eskdale to Ravenglass on the coast. The magnificent Hard Knott Pass with its Roman Fort is an easy drive. Ambleside, Coniston, Grasmere, Windermere from 30- 45 mins drive.
Other Activities: Heavy Horses Centre at Millom, Eskdale Mill,
Eskdale golf course, boat trips on Coniston, canoeing, riding, cycling, Ulverston market (Thursdays), cinemas (Barrow-in-Furness, Ulverston and Ambleside).
Golf: There are a number of really beautiful golf courses in the area - play golf with a view of the fells! Most accept visitors.
