Red Cat House is a one of a kind vacation rental apartment in Taos. When inquiring about vacation accommodations in town, an often asked question is 'Are you walking distance from the Plaza?' Red Cat House is unique in that it across the street from the Historic Taos Plaza. In fact there are Plaza, town and mountain views from every window. This apartment offers convenience combined with a peaceful and quiet, spacious yet cozy, home away from home for two.
Red Cat House is located on Dona Luz Lane, 'The Garden Street of Taos' (landscaped by me, a professional landscaper) This street boasts a wonderful variety of shops and restaurants. It was once the 'Red Light District' in town and La Dona Luz was a madame. Most of the shops are women owned and we call ourselves 'The Ladies of Dona Luz'. I have a shop on the street. Red Cat Melissiana, two doors away It is a shop filled with a little bit of everything as long as it is fun and unusual--antiques, gifts, local folkart, lingerie and flower shop...
Entry is down a little brick pathway surrounded by blooming plants with original outdoor art on all walls and an outdoor seating area. Upstairs is Red Cat House-a wonderful intimate world of its own. You will discover antiques, color and light, original art and whimsical touches in your own private little world. Many of the furnishings are available for sale (if I can bear to part with them.)
You will often find fresh flowers from my home garden or my flower shop and there is always an array of plants throughout the apartment.
The sunny eat in kitchen is well equipped for morning coffee, a gourmet breakfast or a romantic dinner for two.
The living room is a perfect spot for lounging with a comfortable couch, lamps, a flat screen TV, DVD's, books and a selection of music for just that right mood. Enjoy dinner at an 18th century walnut tilt top table for two looking out over the Plaza with a view of Taos Mountain in the distance. If you need to do a little work (not too much I hope), there is high speed internet available and a desk where you can write about your wonderful Taos adventures or even compose a spontaneous love poem..
The sunlight bathroom has a large shower, lots of towels, robes for two and some fun touches to discover.
The bedroom is so very special with an antique queen size, pillow top, four post teak canopy bed, down comforter, fine linens and lots of pillows. Hang your clothes in a tall mirrored English oak armoire. The bedroom is cozy with a gas log stove. The multi paned windows are screened to allow you to enjoy our wonderful mountain air that just invites snuggling-so cozy and romantic.
If you can tear yourselves away from the comforts of Red Cat House, all of Taos is just outside your door. You are within easy walking distance of all Historic District shops, restaurants, galleries and museums. You may browse the many guides and menus found in the apartment or just ask me for suggestions about 'All Things Taos'. Ask me where to go for live music and special events during your stay so you can meet folks who enjoy life and all the richness Taos has to offer. I enjoy sharing the charms and stories of our town with visitors. I can also stock your refrigerator, make dinner reservations or whatever you might wish done before your arrival.
Red Cat House has so much to offer. This is a little slice of Paradise in Taos-the perfect vacation spot you will always remember.

I own two shops on the street where The Red Cat House apartment is located. Red Cat Melissiana is a bit of everything--fun and unique. Red Cat For Her is a lingerie/gift shop. The Red Cat House is above the lingerie store.
Melissa /Taos mgr. purchased this apartment in 2012
The first time I saw this apartment I saw the potential for a wonderful vacation rental. It is cozy yet spacious and the location can't be beat. I receive so many compliments on my two other vacation rentals in town for my taste and sense of zany style and I love to garden so the combination of the apartment and the front garden was something I could not resist. This could become the most popular apartment in town! Everyone who sees it (including me) wants to move in!
I love the spacious, yet intimate feel. I love the way my eclectic taste with the furnishings (high end antiques, rustic, country and New Mexican pieces) All the art is original with great variety. I love all the nouances and fun, little touches to be found throughout the space.
Then there is the location--right in the heart of town and just across the street from the Plaza.
Lucy, thanks so much for your enthusiastic review. I am so glad you were so pleased with your accommodations at my Red Cat House apartment for your Christmas visit. It truly is a delightful place to stay in Taos. This is a great street. As you mentioned you stayed above Substance Clothing for Women and I'm glad you spent time in my shop Red Cat Melissiana for your lingerie and flower purchases. If you return in the summer, you will enjoy all the gardens I plant on the street. Your little courtyard is especially beautiful. Melissa
We enjoyed staying. The apartment is nicely set out above a row of shops, and entered to through a delightful green garden. It's very close to some great restaurants, and right next to the Taos Plaza. The facilities are good and clean, and there are some free standing air-conditioners for the hot days. The WiFi played up, but Melissa Serfling, the ever helpful owner, had it replaced by the end of the week and let us use her computer in the evening in the meantime (her office is downstairs). Taos and the surrounding region is an amazingly beautiful place, with a lot to see and do, and we would recommend it and the apartment to anyone thinking about a holiday in New Mexico.
We loved our stay at Redcat house. The location is perfect and the apartment was very clean and nice
Awesome place, great layout on the second floor. Very quaint, local feel! Can walk everywhere. When we go back will def stay again!
We recently stayed at Red Cat House Vacation apartment in Taos, NM. We found the apartment to be exactly as described and depicted in the pictures. The directions we received to the apartment and to gain entry were clear and we had no problems. The apartment was very cute, well-furnished, clean, and within 1 block walking distance of the Taos Plaza. Although the apartment provided a coffee maker and coffee, we enjoyed walking each morning the short distance to the Hotel La Fonda de Taos on the Plaza to buy cups of coffee. There is a coffee shop in the hotel's lobby and they serve Starbucks - what can I say... we're addicted to Starbucks. However, there were a few minor issues which precluded me from giving it a 5-star rating. The garden-way entry to Red Cat House is way overgrown and in my view needs to be trimmed back. You almost have to fight you're way through the overgrown foilage, including bees and yellow jackets, which are attracted by the flowers. Another concern is the refrigerator was cool at best. We bought some milk, stored it overnight, and it was cool the next morning -- not cold. I turned up the temperature dial to coldest (and turned it back when we left), but it didn't seem to make much difference. And finally, our short stay occurred during the the 90+ heat wave and the apartment was not cool. Melissa had opened all the windows to create a cross breeze, but our first night stay was uncomfortably warm. We tried using the 2 coolers provided, but they really didn't work very well. I'm not holding Red Cat House accountable for the hot weather issue in July, but surely something can be done about the first two aforementioned issues. Overall, we enjoyed our stay in Taos, Melissa provides a nice rental, and we would use her rentals again, but only with A/C when it's hot.
My husband I spent a long weekend in Taos for a quick vacation. The condo was in a great location. Just across the street from the main Plaza. The place was meticulously maintained. We absolutely loved staying there. Easy access, easy parking. The whole experience was fantastic. Highly recommend!
The only small insignificant issue is that both my husband and I are very tall. The doorways were very low and we must have bumped out heads a dozen times. But we laughed it off.
Melissa's property is unique, extremely clean, wonderfully appointed, and very convenient to everything in Taos. We stayed for 2 nights and thoroughly enjoyed the apartment and Melissa. I would recommend this property to anyone needing a complete apartment with plenty of room in the center of Taos.
This Vacation Rental is so very special. Just outside the door of this one bedroom apartment is all Taos has to offer. You are walking distance to shops, galleries, museums and restaurants in the downtown Historic District of Taos.
