This characterful cottage is an historic, free-standing house in the centre of the oldest part of Volendam, just a stone's throw from the dyke, water-front, harbour, shops and bars. It is literally just a minute's walk to all kinds of activities, yet the cottage itself in on a quiet corner. During the daytime, tourists gather to explore the streets, but in the evening they melt away leaving just the locals.
The house has 1 large main bedroom with a further single bedroom leading off with a bunk-bed (2 singles) and a smaller child's bed; there is a further sofa-bed downstairs in the lounge, as well as a separate sofa. Also downstairs is a modern shower room with toilet.
A baby cot and high chair are also available.
There is also a fully-equipped kitchenette, including a washing machine.
The cottage is equipped with wifi and cable TV.
All bed linen and towels are provided and tea/coffee is always available.
There are afew steps at the front of the house which looks out into the historic, traffic-free street, and there is a tiny paved area with a table and 2 chairs.
The cottage is well-equipped, however if you need anything extra, my own house is just around the corner, so just let me know and I'll do my best to get it for you.
This is the oldest part of the village, where the original fishing village grew up. It is called the ''Doolhof'' which translates as ''maze'' or ''labyrinth'' since it consists of small, higgledy-piggledy alleys. It's fairly small though, so you can't get lost.
Just up the ''devil's stairway'' is the dyke area of Volendam and the sea-front. If you turn right, you head for the busy harbour with many shops, bars, cafes and restaurants. Turn left, and after 2 minutes you pass the last shops and it's an open sea-view along the dyke for 3 km until you reach historic Edam.
Nearby (5 minutes drive) there is a small beach with fine golden sand and free parking!
How to get here:
There is a regular bus (no 316) from Amsterdam Centraal Station bus station to Volendam (centrum). From the bus-stop it's a 5 - 10 minute walk to the cottage. If coming by car, you can park at the large, free car-park on Parallelweg. From there it's a 10 minute walk to the cottage. See Google maps or ask me for details.
It's a great alternative to staying in Amsterdam: in Volendam you can leave your car in the free car-park and take the regular, comfortable bus-service to Amsterdam, and you don't have to worry about high car-parking charges or bumping into cyclists!
Volendam is also a short bus or car journey to other scenic and historic towns in North Holland, such as:
- Edam, a living museum of beautiful houses and quiet canals (walk or cycle along the dyke from Volendam, or 5 minutes by car/bus)
- Monnickendam ... a lovely old town centre with bars and cafes.
- Broek-in-Waterland ... explore the historic church, gardens, and canal-side walks
- Hoorn .... old harbour, grand 17c town square, lovely bars, vintage shops, fine dining
- Alkmaar - old centre with canals and small shops, like Amsterdam but quieter; cheese-market.
- Zanse Schans ... keen on windmills? here are beautifully preserved, painted, old wooden examples, some in working order
Volendam also has: a great music scene; boat trips to Marken; 5D experience; 2 concert halls with regular local and international performers; Saturday market; art Hotel Spaander; locals in costume; and more ...!
There are a few steps up to the property on the outside, so it may not be suitable for the elderly/infirm. This is an historic property: the staircase inside (at the top) is a little narrow and there is a sloping ceiling on one side of the bed.
