Welcome to Brother Bear Lodge located on White Iron Lake outside Ely, MN. Our home features 4 bedrooms, 2 full baths, air conditioning, 2 fireplaces, a sauna and wireless internet service. Brother Bear can comfortably accommodate two families and we have sleeping spaces for 12. Bedroom set up is as follows: master (1 queen); bedroom 2 with bunk bed (full and twin) and additional twin; bedroom 3 with bunk bed (full and twin) with additional twin; and bedroom 4 full and twin beds.
Our cabin is the original outfitting building used by White Iron Beach Resort. The resort was founded in 1917 making it one of the earliest resorts in the wilderness area. As a guest at our cabin you have full use of the resort and all of the amenities it has to offer (more on that later!).
While the resort is almost 100 years old our cabin is virtually brand new. The original outfitters building has been transformed into a year round lake home. It is fully furnished with all new everything! We have a gas fireplace, air conditioning, wireless service, a very large deck, great room with large dining table and an additional family room with HD TV, satellite service and an additional fireplace. We have also recently added a three season porch for bug free relaxation overlooking the lake. We have a fully equipped kitchen with a dishwasher and microwave. The wood paneling that surrounds you was harvested from the blow down of the great storm of 2001. All on a single level for those who don't like steps (you will need to climb some steps to get into the cabin).
While staying at Brother Bear Lodge you'll have the peacefulness and beauty of the woods and lake while having access to the amenities of White Iron Beach Resort. There is a sandy and shallow beach, sauna, canoes and kayaks for use, boats for rent, and a family resort lodge packed with games, books and good company to enjoy. The resort has a busy volleyball court, playground, and all you'll need to feel at home yet on vacation. The main office is located on the main road into the lake during ice fishing season with snowmobile trails close by. The resort also offers guide services for those who take their fishing seriously.
Speaking of fishing...White Iron Lake is spectacular! We sit in a bay with a quaint island offshore, while the lake itself is 7 miles long and part of a chain of five lakes. We have access to the Boundary Waters right from our shore. White Iron Lake is known for its large Northern Pike and Walleye as well as Bass and Crappies.
For the more adventuresome we offer easy access to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA), one of the wildest places in the USA. Overnight access to the BWCA is closely monitored by the US Park Service and we strongly recommend you make plans ahead of time if you plan to camp in the BWCA.
Our neighbors include deer, wolves (largest population in the lower 48), black bears, fox, bald eagles, and the occasional moose.
While we are located in the Great Northwoods we are only a short drive to town. Ely has been called the 'coolest small town in America'. It features many quaint shops and restaurants. If you run out of supplies there are 2 full service grocery stores in town as well as several places for sporting equipment, bait and the like. The area offers many places to boat, hike and fish as well as interesting attractions like the Soudan Mine. The North American Bear Center and International Wolf Center are both located right outside opposite ends of town. These provide a chance to learn about and see up close our most famous residents (hopefully you will see them while at the cabin, but not as close). Several world class golf courses and a casino are located within a reasonable drive, Giant's Ridge and Fortune Bay among them.
We know you will find this to be an easy going, restful and fun place to gather for your next vacation. We look forward to hearing from you soon!
We are a busy family with three active and adventurous boys and a dog. We were first introduced to Ely and White Iron Lake years ago by dear friends. We live in St. Paul and are thrilled to have a place in the woods for our children to explore and for us to escape to. We love the unique beauty of the Ely area and the way coming here takes us completely away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. We welcome you and hope you, too, will enjoy our home.
Anne and Jim Gattman purchased this cabin in 2012
Our cabin was originally the canoe outfitters building for a family resort. We loved its size and openness, and with help from friends we were able to create a vision to turn it into a great lake home. We are grateful to be part of the White Iron Beach Resort community. Our children love to roam around, meet up with other children and enjoy all that the resort has to offer. We appreciate the nearness to Ely while still being able to get away to a beautiful spot in the woods. The Ely area and the BWCA are wild and free and full of great opportunities to explore nature and make great memories.
We welcome you to enjoy the privacy and convenience and comfort of a new cabin (with historic roots) while taking advantage of the benefits of the White Iron Beach Resort. The beach is a quick walk down the hill from our cabin. You can be right in the mix or enjoy more privacy on the deck.
Thank you so much for the opportunity to spend our honeymoon here. This is a beautiful location and the house is simply stunning.
We recently stayed at Brother Bear Lodge and had such a good time. The cabin is laid out and furnished beautifully, and with four bedrooms and two full baths, it would be great for extended families, women’s weekends, reunions, or guys’ retreat. While offering plenty of room for everybody, it has a warm, cozy feeling, not to mention a very nice sauna. We felt “at home” the second we walked in.
Fishing and hiking are just outside the door, and shopping and eating spots are only 10 minutes away in Ely (although you’d never know you’re that close). There’s all sorts of activities for kids on the beach and in the main lodge of the White Iron Resort. It was so nice to sit on the deck and gaze at the lake and the stars at night. We even tried to see who could find the most satellites.
We had a wonderful time and can’t wait to return, but we’ll definitely plan on staying longer. There are so many places to explore and it was so nice coming back to such a comfortable cabin and cooking dinner together in the huge, open kitchen. Thank you for letting us share the beauty and comfort of your retreat!
We came to Ely from Portland, Oregon for a wedding, and booked this cabin to share with three families. The owners live near Minneapolis/St Paul, so it is managed through a little resort nearby. We arrived and fell in love with the cabin immediately. It has so much space, was tastefully and charmingly decorated, and the layout is perfect. We kept cozy with the fireplace in the main area, and the boys watched football in the four season porch (there's a little fireplace in there too.) It rained for our entire stay, and our girls (1.5 and 3.5) had lots of space to play and stretch out. The kitchen is well stocked, and my mother even baked all of the pies for the wedding in the oven. We loved everything about this place and are looking for an excuse to come back. Thanks for the great hospitality, Jim and Anne! We love Brother Bear Lodge!
Spent most of a week at Brother Bear Lodge - simply spectacular. The cabin is beautiful and comfortable, very open. Tons of space for the whole family, actually two of them. Four adults and five kids had room to spare. Very modern kitchen, all the amenities you would want. Furniture is comfortable. Loved the decorating. We enjoyed the resort - a nice beach for swimming with free use of kayaks, paddle boats. Had a guide take us fishing and everyone caught something (mostly walleye). Could not see all the area has to offer - did some hiking, took in the town a few times. Will definitely plan a trip to the boundary waters canoe area next time. Thanks for making our first trip to Northern MN such a delight!
Ely is a charming town that serves as an entry point for the amazing Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Ely has something for everyone...outfitters, great shops and restaurants and it is home to the International Wolf Center and the American Bear Center. Ely has a strong history as a forestry and mining town and shares the beautiful forests and rock of the Iron Range.
