Mary purchased this apartment in 2010

Why Mary chose Westminster and West End

The apartment couldn't be better located for London's West End shopping, theaters, restaurants and art galleries. W1 is London's most central West End postcode with everything you could wish for just a few moments walk away. With Oxford Street, Regent Street, Soho, Tottenham Court Road, Leicester Square and London’s theater district just round the corner, this beautiful flat is perfectly situated for you to get the most out of your London stay.

The apartment has all new appliances i.e. microwave, dishwasher, washer/dryer, single oven, gas hob, large fridge freezer and even a Vita mix for your morning smoothie. Free high speed wi fi is available (the fastest central London can offer) and a stereo system with I pod/I phone dock. Apple chargers for I pads, I phones and Mac Laptops are also provided as well as a brand new, powerful hairdryer and heated hair straighteners. You can access many free films and TV programs on your laptop through BBC I Player.

What makes this apartment unique

Fitzrovia W1 was once home to writers such as Virginia Woolf and George Bernard Shaw. More recently it has become a popular destination for celebrities like Lady Gaga. Madonna previously owned a townhouse here which she shared with Guy Ritchie, who has more recently bought two mansions in Fitzrovia which he is combining into one house. Numerous media companies and the headquarters of the BBC are based in the area which feeds into its wonderful, vibrant, celebrity filled buzz.

Recommendations for local restaurants and bars.

There are so many restaurants to try in the area and so many different cuisines we wouldn't want to limit your exploration, however here are a few that we thoroughly enjoy.

For breakfast try the Riding House Cafe on Great Titchfield Street itself. We choose to go early because it can get very busy during the lunchtime and evening periods as it is so close to the BBC headquarters, but for breakfast and a bit of celebrity spotting it can be a good place.

There is also a lovely fish restaurant called Bonnie Gull at 21 Foley Street. Also the Thai River on Foley Street, just before the fish restaurant, has very good food and is great if you want a quiet meal.

If you are really in the mood for something special and don't mind splashing out we can highly recommend the Langham Hotel for afternoon tea. (n.b. not to be confused with the Langham Court Hotel opposite the Yorkshire Grey Pub on Langham Street) It will cost you £40 per head but it's an experience well worth doing. The Langham Hotel bar is also a brilliant place to go for an evening drink, it's twice the price of a London pub but it’s a wonderful experience and really worth a visit. Get a seat at the bar and watch the highly professional bar tenders mix cocktails like a cabaret!

We hope you have a great time.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Mary's daughter greeted me and she is an absolute gem of a host- the kind who will change your whole energy of a place, a city, of your outlook, by the inner peace and brightness she has achieved! She is generous, friendly, extremely thoughtful and the type of person you want to have taking care of you. Her house is a temple, a healing place. She welcomed me with a gentle warmth when I moved to London that will stay with me for months, warmth in January:) A fantastic host and the flat reflects it. The location is impeccable, as well as the furnishings. Thank you!

Exceptional indeed!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed at this property at the beginning of July, and if we could award more than 5 stars for our experience, we would!

The initial correspondence booking the flat was answered promptly by Mary, and the booking process was efficient.

On the day of arrival, Laura met us at the flat, and gave us a very thorough walk through and explanation of everything we needed to know during our stay. It was much appreciated.

The location of the flat is perfect! Though there is some activity on the street in the daytime, with lots of restaurants and cafes, at night it is wonderfully quiet. It is close to underground stations, walking distance to UCL (where I needed to be), and for us, best of all, a very short walk to Regent's Park, where the early morning walks in the park was a highlight of our stay in London. We were also able to walk to other attractions from the flat, including the theatre.

The flat itself was exactly as described. Excellent in every respect. We did not have the opportunity to use the kitchen facilities much, though if needed, it is a well set up kitchen. We did use the washer and dryer, which was nice to have, and easy to use.

The bed and linens were very comfortable. The washroom and shower facilities were very good, with plenty of towels. There was even an iPhone charger in the flat.

Though London was uncharacteristically hot during our stay, the breeze through the flat with the windows open was amazing. Laura showed us the proper way to use the sash windows on check-in, and we were very comfortable.

Finally, it must be stated that it was a pleasure dealing with Mary and Laura. They were curteous, efficient, organized, and made it known they were available if we needed them.

If our travels take us back to London, we would ABSOLUTELY book here again. We unhesitatingly offer our recommendation.

Comfortable, well-located London property

  • 5 of 5

Two of us stayed five nights in this well-appointed, conveniently located apartment. The property is attractively furnished and decorated and, in particular, has a stylish and functional kitchen with quality appliances. Importantly for the traveler, there is a combination washer-dryer which works well. The A/V setup is a a good one, and the internet is fast and reliable. We found that the central heating was very effective, to the point where we could have used a lighter-weight bedding option. The nearest tube stations are 5-10 minutes walk, depending on the direction you're going. A taxi or Uber to/from Paddington Station costs about GBP 7.

The bathroom is clean and attractive but, in keeping with the style of the property, it is small. However, we managed to enjoy hot showers and baths throughout our stay. The only other thing we'd note is that the flat is on the second floor (up two flights of stairs) and, while it was no problem for us, it might be a factor for some people. On the plus side, the owner provides kitchen and bathroom consumables, which is a real plus for the traveler and a contrast to many properties. There is a Tesco Express a couple of minutes from the front door and this proximity, taken with the basic provisions in the kitchen, means that one wastes a minimum of holiday time in getting setup.

Our dealings with the owner were very friendly and professional, and we appreciated the personal reception and briefing on arrival, and the late check-out on the last day. Our deposit was returned promptly - before we left the UK on the day of check-out, in fact. We would not hesitate to book the apartment again for a stay in Fitzrovia.

London is an exciting city to visit and staying at Mary's flat made the visit just about perfect

  • 5 of 5

The location of the flat couldn't be better. It's on a residential street but there are restaurants and shops around the corner, down the street, with a variety of cuisines and prices all within a 10 minute walk. Because it's so close to major transportation hubs, everything on the central map could be easily navigated from Mary's apartment.

The apartment is exactly as pictured and described with a large and cozy living room that we literally lived in. THe bed is sturdy and comfortable and the bedroom is pleasantly decorated with enough linens and towels provided to make oneself fell pampered and indulged. The bathroom is indeed small but once you get the hang of it, it works ok. The kitchen is more than adequately outfitted and we often ate one meal a day in the apartment and felt completely at home.

At home....that's the key. After a day of touring, when we finally turned the key into the door on Great Tichfield Street, we knew we were home.

Worst London rental in 20+ years

  • 1 of 5

We have been renting apartments in London almost annually for more than 20 years; our experience with this one was by far the worst. The most serious issue had to do with obtaining the return of our substantial security deposit. The owner first said we were responsible for damage to the carpet caused by the residue of flowers that her agent had left in the apartment; we responded that we had no responsibility for that damage. Then, two weeks later she made two additional claims for damage that she said were later discovered, contradicting her earlier statements to us that that the apartment was always carefully inspected, and all damage was, noted right after each renter had departed.

More seriously, for almost two months she refused to return any part of our deposit, demanding that we file our review of the apartment first. (Fortunately, our credit card issuer, with which we filed a dispute, did credit the full deposit back to our account, presumably finding that the owner’s action was not justified.)

These events led us to speculate that the glowing reviews posted by previous renters had effectively been coerced from people who were simply trying to ensure that their full security deposits were returned, since none of those reviews even mentioned any of the following deficiencies in this apartment.

• The listing claims there is a dining area with seating for four. There is no dining area! The only place to eat is at an adjustable height coffee table in the living room, to which one must drag up two easy chairs, neither of which was suitable for dining. (After two days the rental agent brought in two chairs from her home, which solved our problem, but they were removed when we departed.)

• The listing claims the apartment has air conditioning. It does not!

• The listing says that the apartment is up four short flights on stairs. Those flights were 10 stairs each, which we did not consider “short.” Getting to the apartment required much more climbing than we anticipated.

• The listing says that the apartment is a five minute walk to the Oxford Circus and Goodge Street tube stations. Walking briskly, it took us 12 minutes to reach each of them.

• The freezer was completely full when we arrived; there was not even room in it for one small bag.

• A dressmakers dummy in the small bedroom impaired access to the only rack available for hangars.

Owner's Response: As a result of being held accountable for extensive damage to our home, this guest has posted a false and malicious review in an attempt to damage our Host reputation. The facts stated in this response can be verified through VRBO Customer Service if necessary, as all correspondence took place via their Message Board & was thoroughly reviewed by the VRBO Trust & Security Team. No complaints of any nature from this guest have been upheld. Furthermore, if the falsehoods posted in this review were genuinely true our listing would have been suspended. We would strongly suggest that other property owners consider very carefully indeed whether they wish to host this gentleman. It has been a deeply unpleasant and disheartening experience for us and one which we would not wish upon any other VRBO host. 99% of guests to our beautiful home have been delightful, honest and have treated our property with the utmost respect. However it is probably inevitable that eventually, at some point, a VRBO host will encounter a guest such as this. On Check Out our Property Manager found numerous permanent and prominent stains on our living room carpet. It was raised with the guest but he denied responsibility, tried to blame previous guests and even our Property Manager's wife. He then threatened to post a damning review if we pursued the matter. After departure it was found that that the washer dryer has been grossly misused and was broken and the kitchen floor had been badly damaged. This is the first time in five years of renting our property that we have ever needed to retain a portion of the security deposit for repairs. We made every attempt to come to an amicable agreement with this guest who, as a lawyer from the US, displayed no willingness or experience of co operation or compromise. In fact he escalated the matter in such an aggressive, threatening and litigious manner that we were advised by VRBO Management to cease all communication with him. In good faith however, we carefully listed the costs of repairs and deducted only those costs from the security deposit. The remainder was returned to the guest prior to any review being posted. Our integrity intact, we view this experience as an isolated and unfortunate incident in a renting history that has thankfully & overwhelmingly been characterised by mutual respect, positivity & professionalism from both our Property Managment Team & our guests alike. Sincerely, Mary

Perfect location for a London visit!

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying in this flat - the location simply cannot be any better for navigating around town. The apartment is well appointed with all of the amenities you would expect and a few extras to make the stay comfortable, including a very nice coffee maker (pods available at Tesco across the street). Yes, the bathroom is small, but it isn't smaller than average for London or Manhattan - it is to be expected. Do watch out for the water temperature (in all of London) as it can get quite hot. The local dining options were great and ranged from quick bites (Pret/EAT and local cafes) to higher-end fine dining. Shopping was plentiful, museums and parks were close and easy to navigate. Overall, we had a great experience and would be happy to stay here again!

Superb Flat & Location

  • 5 of 5

This flat was one of our favorites as my wife and I traveled around the UK. We booked a 5-night stay, but we wished we had stayed longer. As others have noted, the flat is stylish, the living room is spacious, the bed is extremely comfortable and the location is ideal. We felt that we were staying in a home that someone cared for and took pride in. After 5 nights, we were sorry to leave. Very highly recommended and we hope to stay here again.
