I had the good fortune to spend a week in the apartment 421626 owned by S.McK. at Punta Volpe.

The apartment is very welcoming and well organised for a vacation by the sea. The design of the furnishings inside and out permits one to look out through the garden and rich vegetation to the sea just beyond which can be reached within 2/3 minutes on the path winding through bougainvillea, juniper, cedar and olive trees. The apartment is simple and yet extremely comfortable for everyday living. We sometimes went out to dinner in one of the many restaurants in the nearby town and at other times we ate on the terrace under flowers and the stars.

I couldn’t have asked for anything better.

A nice stay but it could be better.

  • 2 of 5

Whilst we enjoyed our stay at Porto Rotondo as it was a pleasant little unit we felt it could do with some minor improvements & a thorough clean.

We could not find a kettle to boil water so had to use a saucepan. We could not find a toaster only a very old & not very clean toaster oven which turned us off completely.

We were unpleasantly surprised on the day we departed when we stripped the bed & removed the pillowcases to find very dirty old pillows. They were disgusting, marks all over them. We were horrified that we had been sleeping on them. There cobwebs & spiders at the back of one of the couches. They have been there a long time.

Lots of notes everywhere even a note to tell us the TV remote does not work! Please! If you know the TV remote does not work replace the remote control or replace the small television. Neither of these are expensive.

The owner supplied very detailed information on how to get to the unit & how everything works but we were disappointed that the unit was not in better condition.

The unit is a short walk to the water & has a lovely view from the unit & it was lovely to sit on the outdoor furniture to enjoy the view.

Unfortunately we could not recommend this unit to others. The owner needs to spend a little bit of money if she intends to continue to rent it out to make it more enjoyable for paying guests.

Owner's Response: It is such a shame that bad weather left these guests with nothing to do but complain about where they were. This has been an unusually wet spring for Sardinia and in fact for most of Europe. It is also unfortunate that the guests brought out all of the white terrace cushions even for the open area despite the rain and had their dog walk and sleep all over them and all over the sofa cushions inside the house. Dog hairs and dirt were everywhere. ALL of the house cushions and indoor cushions had just been washed and they did not use the white covers for the outdoor cushions which are changed and put on clean for each guest. I purchased a brand new remote control for the television and it worked perfectly when I was there ten days before their arrival. No one used the house in the intervening period. The toaster is indeed very small but if I put in a larger one there would be even less space on the kitchen counter in this small vacation house. In Italy very few people use electric kettles and find it perfectly acceptable to boil water in a saucepan on the gas stove which has a strong flame and probably heats the water far faster than in an electric kettle. 4 bed cushions were purchased new a few months ago and there were 2 extra cushions above the closet with the extra bedding. Had they requested anything of me during their stay I would have been able to help them out but they said to me and to the person who went to check that everything was fine. The sofas are built-in and impossible to move away from the wall. Unless these guests plan to stay at a spacious five-star hotel with five-star prices, I could not recommend them as guests.

Lost and Found in Sardinia

  • 5 of 5

What a surprise! Who would think that October would be the perfect month for a holiday in Sardinia? But is was. Our stay in Sheila's beautiful, artistic apartment was a dream come true. Not only did it include everything two couples would need while on vacation (even down to a cooler for the beach), but it far-exceeded our expectations. The apartment is situated on a hillside where it catches the cool breezes but is also on a sunny aspect. The scenic view of the ocean and far hills is breathtaking. You are just a short walk down the hill to the seaside terraces where you can lounge as much as you like or take a dip in the water which was a perfect temperature this time of year. The complex and it's vegetation look as if they were landscaped by Mother Nature herself. The apartment also has the conveniences of a washing machine and WiFi if you can't bring yourself to completely unplug. The couple of times we needed help during our stay Sheila was a short phone call away and her maintenance help arrived within 15 minutes to solve our problem. Punta Volpe is an upscale neighborhood and is an easy walk or short drive from the resort town of Porto Rotondo. Porto Rotondo has all of the amenities you could need including wonderful restaurants (we highly recommend La Rosa dei Venti), shops, banks, and a small market. For serious grocery shopping we recommend driving to Arzachena to a supermercato or to Auchan near the Olbia airport. During our stay in Sardinia we traveled extensively over the island and were never disappointed in our discoveries. We highly recommend visiting the Nuraghi sites near Arzachena; taking the ferry from Palau to La Maddalena islands; going wine tasting at Vigne Surrau; or really going off the grid to have lunch at Su Gologone in the Supramonte region of Sardinia. But most importantly, you really don't have to leave Sheila's beautiful apartment to enjoy a perfect Sardinian vacation.

Owner's Response: For the past few years, October has been a beautiful dry sunny month in Sardinia. Climate change makes predictions difficult, but again this year the weather was good and I am so happy my wonderful guests could swim in the sea almost every day that they were not driving all around the island to discover some of its well-known and/or secret and totally surprising locations. Choosing whether to do nothing or do lots, my guests did both - one day for discovery and the next day in total relaxation in the garden, at the house and around town.

We had a fantastic two weeks in July at Sheila's apartment. The accommodation was exactly as described with a nice view of the sea from the garden and a great outdoor patio space where we spent most of our time when not out and about exploring beautiful Sardinia. The complex is lovely, well maintianed and has a touch of class about it. The swimming pool is great with a fansastic view of the bay. The beach within walking distance was lovely and despite we had a car we spent 6 days on this beach. The beach cafe was good value and we had lunch a couple of times overlooking the water with fresh fish of the day. Cooking facilities were fine with a hob with 3 gas burners and one electric. If you do have a car we can thoroughly reccomend a drive to La Cinta and Brandinchi beach - just amazing. We are already planning to go back and stay in the apartment next year!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much! I am always so happy when I know my guests have enjoyed themselves, which is what I am doing right now right here in Sardinia. Every year I stay for a few weeks and at that time I always find little things that can be made just a bit better! Sheila

Perfect Holiday!

  • 5 of 5

What can I say. Perfect. Where do I begin? First of all the view, the garden, the beautiful patio surrounded by an amazing blooming bouganvillea. The fully equipped two bedroom apartment with everything you could possibly need to relax (but we didn't spend much time indoors anyway). We were lucky because the italian high season only lasts till the end of august, we were told, so we had the pool almost to ourselves, as well as the lovely platforms in front of the sea. The weather was also perfect. There is a little bus that takes you into Porto Rotondo for free (a 5 minute ride), where you can find everything you need: groceries, restaurants and wonderful gelati. We spent a week swimming and sunbathing and relaxing and have decided to repeat next year. This is exactly what you need if you are stressed out: a week in paradise.

My niece, an American, is taking the International Baccalaureate Program in Sweden (Dad is Swedish) and wanted us to visit. Sardinia was decided upon. So, while searching VRBO this property surfaced. I'm glad it did.

Rented a car at the Olbia Airport and followed the signs to Costa Smeralda and then drove through town to find Punta Volpe and the Condominiums. They are lovely. Grounds are well maintained with bougainvillea and hibiscus. With Sheila's instructions we found the unit (treasure hunt!) in the middle of B complex. Although compact, we found the unit to have everything we needed. If you are looking for a gourmet kitchen (why, for God's sake, in Italy?) this may not be the place for you as there is no oven just a toaster oven. We were thrilled to prepare great breakfasts and even more delighted to eat at the outside table watching the incredible view the space offers. So special! Azure blue sea, big hills across the bay and all focused through the living lens of the bougainvillea trellis. Most of our time was spent on this porch.

Routine went like this: Drive around looking at the sights, come back and go to the water's edge, read on the chaise lounges, swim, then take the fresh water shower. Back to the condo to get an adult beverage and walk down the hill to the nearest (and most beautiful) beach to watch Porto Rotondo shimmer into the early evening. Return, bathe and go out for dinner. I want that pattern back!

Favorite restaurants were Locando Santi Andrea in San Panateo. Wonderful food and service in a special open-air room with a view of the hills. Great fish, pasta and the best of the suckling pig dinners I had. Lu Stazzu was very good food in a dramatic setting; it's fun to watch the pig cooking in the fireplace. And if you are going to the Tombe dei Giganti La Prisgiona in Arzachena I would definitely stop by Jaddhu Resort and eat Mr. Tonino Dettori's excellent lunch. You can then walk down to the sight.

Property is as described, pictures are accurate. Sheila is easy to work with. Don't use the toaster oven and hair dryer at the same time it will trip the fuse.

Porto Rotondo is within walking distance (I'm 61) and is truly the lifestyle of the rich and famous. A beautiful harbor where you can watch people strolling and enormous pleasure boats coming and going whilst you sit at a cafe (my favorite was Paramore at the end by the Harbormaster bldg.) and sip wine. A great base for exploring the Emerald Coast!
