About Joe

We are a retired Irish couple who holiday in France a couple of times a year - which allows you to book our lovely French holiday home when we are not there. We love food and wine and Issigeac suits us admirably as it is just a short stroll into the village for an aperitif or a meal.

Why Joe chose Issigeac

Magnificent swimming pool for your sole use only right outside your door.

Lots of space for kids to let off steam.

Seating at the far end of the garden so you can relax away from the mayhem of the pool and yet still keep an eye on things.

Parasols if you need shade by the pool.

Large wooden timber pergola, surrounded by honeysuckle and other screening plants if you need to get in out of the sunshine and still watch the kids in the pool. It is also a great place for leisurely evening meals on warm balmy nights.

Great barbecue on the terrace - no need to spend money on expensive meals out.

Fully fitted kitchen for meals indoors.

Table tennis table for family fun and serious competition rivalry.

La Belle Petraie is located in the bastide area of France - the real France - full of history with the locals continuing their lives as they have done for centuries - farming, vineyards, markets.

What makes this house unique

Stroll to the village for a pint or an aperitif or for a fabulous meal in one of four great restaurants - and no worries about drink driving.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Last June was our fifth visit to La Belle Petraie and it gets better and better each time we return.

The house is secluded and has magnificent gardens surrounding it with three lovely sitting areas depending on the time of day, but the real bonus for us was the fantastic swimming pool. The interior has a rustic ambiance about it, spacious and very well equipped and excellent WiFi.

The medieval village of Issigeac is an eight minute walk from the house with plenty of shops, bars and superb restaurants but the highlight for us was the Sunday Market where we mingled with the locals, bought their products and drank the local wine.

Within the Dordorgne area, there is plenty to do and see. A visit to Bergerac which is the main shopping area is a must and a visit to Chateau de Lanquais was very interesting. There are also a few wineries in the surrounding area, not to be missed.

Hope to return in 2018.

A little piece of heaven....

  • 5 of 5

My first holiday since 2011. Wow what a holiday. La Belle Patraie was exactly what we needed.

The house is in a quiet location, secluded. The peace and quiet is tranquil. It is is so easy to lay down on the sunbeds by the pool, or move them into the vast gardens, and doze off listening to the sounds of silence (however please make sure you put sun cream on first because it does get very sunny).

The pool is majestic. Its refreshing and its all yours, no sharing with the public. Floatie things were supplied, which was amazing!

The house itself is beautiful, it stays cool during the day so you can retreat inside, but it is lovely and mild at night so you only need a light blanket.

I went here with my two friends, one of whom is in a wheelchair. The house, although not built with accessibility in mind is 99% wheelchair accesible. The only thing is the toilet door is not able to close with a wheelchair, but that is such a minor thing.

The house itself is well looked after and very clean.

Issigeac which is the small medieval village 5 minute walk down the road is beautiful. My friends and I literally did all our shopping there and just relaxed. Bergerac which is a bigger town is only a 20 minute drive away if you need anything the local stores can't supply.

Honestly I would rate this holiday home 10/10. My friends and I are already planning a return trip at the end of this summer, we are that eager to get back!!!

I highly recommend this location, if you want a truly relaxing, peaceful and exciting holiday!

Great location and a wonderful pool meant that we had a lovely time at La Petraie

  • 3 of 5

The pool and grounds are lovely however the house is showing signs of neglect by the owners which, whilst not affecting the overall enjoyment of our holiday, did impact upon the quality of our stay and fell short of our expectations.

There was a leak from water pipes under the kitchen sink which constantly flooded the kitchen floor with dirty brown water (literally several pints every day having to be mopped up). The cupboard under the sink was absolutely sodden so the leak had obviously been going on for some time. The Rep admitted that it was a long standing problem - so it is puzzling as to why it hasn't been fixed yet as it would only take a plumber about an hour to remedy the problem.

Also as a group of 2 adults and 4 children, one of the beds was a camp bed, which considering the cost of a week's stay is really not on, especially as the property is marketed as sleeping up to 8 (I have no idea where others from a larger party would sleep - unless it was on an old foam sofa bed)

The furniture in the main living room was tatty and threadbare and the general impression of the property was that it was quite dirty and uncared for, especially the basement area which houses the table tennis table - this was absolutely filthy.

I would recommend La Petraie for its location (which, being very close to the wonderful village of Issigeac, is great) and the pool which is superb however the overall impression is that the property has been rather neglected by the owners.

Owner's Response: We welcome all our guests in 2018 and hope that the opinion of one person will not sway you from your decision to book a wonderful holiday at La Belle Petraie, which even the reviewer acknowledged they had. Our fabulous private swimming pool will ensure a memorable holiday at a villa on beautiful large grounds - and great value for money. We doubt if our rep would have allowed a leak to continue for days if it was flooding the floor and there was certainly no leak during our visit in June. Regarding sleeping arrangements, La Belle Petraie is well capable of sleeping 8, albeit including some children. As stated on the rental website, there is one double bedroom, with double doors to the pool terrace, one twin bedroom, one single bedroom with ample space for a proper guest bed (not a camp bed) if necessary. There is a very good (new 2017) large double sofa bed in the lounge, and a lovely small sofa bed in the 4th bedroom/dressing room suitable for small children. And there is also the possibility of a guest bed upstairs in the pigeonnier, the only upstairs room, which might be a quirky sleeping arrangement for a teenager. So all in all, there are many sleeping permutations for guests to choose. Regarding the basement area, it is just that - a basement. Guests are welcome to use the table tennis table which is in a nice clean room with a tiled floor. The only other area in the basement which guests will need to access is the utility room. It is assumed that guests will have the common sense to not access other areas which have no relevance to them. We will be happy to answer any queries from future guests and our new rep for 2018 will be available to help guests in any way possible. We look forward to welcoming you to La Belle Petraie.

Fantastic break in a lovely location

  • 5 of 5

We visited La Belle Petraie for the May bank holiday weekend. Having stayed there a year previously, it was great to be able to come back for a break. The proximity to Bergerac airport makes it ideal for a long weekend, as there is no delay in getting to your holiday. It was fantastic to be able to lounge by the pool, eating pate and cheese, and visiting other towns around Issigeac - even made some fantastic finds at a bric-a-brac weekend (vide grenier in local parlance) in a neighbouring village. will definitely be back again!

Summer 2015 Issigeac France

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed at this wonderful property for almost 3 weeks and loved every minute of it. Apart from the house being extremely clean and spacious, it is also very private. The pool is stunning. The proximity of La Belle Petraie to the fabulous medieval village of Issigeac ( 500m... 8 minute walk) is worth its weight in gold. It means one can enjoy a meal in one of several excellent restaurants, replete with wine, and simply stroll home ( or have a few beers after the picturesque Sunday market) keeping driving licences safe and pockets free of taxi fees.

We will return.

2 Weeks in Issigeac

  • 5 of 5

2 weeks wasn't enough.

I have been to the Dordogne region most summers for the past 10 years and our stay at La Belle Petraie has without doubt been the best I have experienced.

The villa is wonderfully spacious and is perfect for family gatherings – which was the purpose of our stay.

The local village, Issigeac, has much to offer and has a good choice of restaurants to choose from – we dined at 4 of them and we enjoyed each of them immensely. Though I would definitely recommend booking tables in advance in the summer season.

Although the options to dine out are plentiful, we equally enjoyed cooking for ourselves at La Belle Petraie – the kitchen amenities are more than accommodating for this.

From the other reviews, it goes without saying that the swimming pool is fantastic, it was pretty much in consistent use from sunrise to sunset during our stay.

We as a family already have our diaries out for a stay again as soon as we can next year – we were all devastated when the holiday was over!

Definitely 5 stars out of 5

A fantastic place to stay

  • 4 of 5

A wonderful place to stay if you want to be within a 10 minute walk of an fascinating medieval French village. Lots to do in the village in late July - several village meals, markets and even a Son et Lumière show. A lovely peaceful, rural part of France. Great pool, plenty of space and excellent wifi!

Gastronomic food, superb wine, wonderful weather and a convivial atmosphere all await you in historical Issigeac, a medieval village in sunny South West France, with its winding streets, old timbered buildings, restaurants and cafe bars and, of course, its famous Sunday market, with its stalls of fresh local fruit, vegetables, bread, sausages, cheeses and wines, as well as clothes, cooking equipment, books, antiques and linens. Also, visit a market each day in various other local villages and bastide towns such as Eymet, Castillones, Sarlat and Beaumont de Perigord. Stop off at some of the local vineyards and their Chateaux to sample the renowned local Bergerac wines. Along the way, admire orchards and fields of yellow sunflowers spread out against the sky. Horse riding and golf are available a short distance away as is lake swimming. Bergerac, also a medieval city, is just 15 mins. away with its lovely old town rising up from the majestic Dordogne River and its many water sports.

Other Activities: Wine tasting, local markets, Chateaux, bastide towns, go-karting

Ski: Skiing in the French Pyrenees is only about a three/four hour drive away but you need to be brave to drive the mountain roads in winter!
